Local donation drive for pets impacted by storm - NBC12.com ...

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Local rescue groups are teaming up to help animals impacted by Hurricane Sandy.

Hundreds of animals are in shelters after becoming separated from their owners when the big storm hit.

Now, there's a push, in the Richmond metro area, to get those animals and shelters extra supplies.

Dr. Richard Teague, with Farmer's Veterinary Hospital, ?is hoping to shine a light on something that's gotten little attention in the aftermath of Sandy.

He knows, animals have been torn from their owners .

Teague is asking for your help.

"We want to ask people to donate whatever they have -- whether it's new or used -- so we can help these animals out," said Teague who's?partnering with several area dog rescue groups -- including Gracie's Guardians, to make a difference.

"A lot of people see the pictures and videos and think that family has lost their home but that family may have a dog or cat that is misplaced, lost or missing," said Will Lowrey.

Many of the animal shelters are in need of extra supplies to take care of the sudden and unexpected influx of animals.

"Wet food, dry food, blankets, unused toys - crates would be helpful," he added. ?

Animal rescue groups in New York and New Jersey?have been?scouring the hardest hit areas -- rescuing thousands of pets.

Right now, in New Jersey, about 200 pets are in a temporary shelter run by the Humane Society of the United States.

Local rescue groups say any donation, regardless of how small, will go along way.

"An animal is an animal and we love to help animals whether they're here in Richmond or New York," Lowrey explained.

If you're interested in donating you can do so right now? until the end of the month. ?

Donations can be dropped off at Farmer's Veterinary Hospital which is located at 3311 Mechanicsville Turnpike in Richmond.
