Pupils from secondary schools throughout Neath Port Talbot are set to benefit from careers advice from some of the savviest businesses in the area, as Careers Wales hosts its third annual NPT Schools Careers Convention.

More than 60 major employers who operate across Neath Port Talbot will be imparting their expert advice to over 1,300 Year 10/11 pupils from secondary schools in the area.

The event, held at Margam Orangery this Thursday (29^th September) is organised by Careers Wales and aims to provide pupils who are thinking about their options after school to gain awareness, be inspired and have hands on experience of the wealth of careers available to them.

Businesses attending the day-long convention include Abertawe Bro Morgannwg NHS Trust, TATA Steel, Costain, Innov8, Western Power and Tinopolis, who will provide pupils with a rare opportunity to find out about a diverse range of businesses and the career paths available to pupils once they leave school.

Speaking ahead of the event, Andrea Jones from Careers Wales West said: ?At Careers Wales we think it?s hugely important for young people to meet employers and training providers who can help them make a decision on the right career path to follow.

?We are extremely encouraged to see such a superb turn out from local businesses, which proves that opportunities are there for young people to go on to achieve great things with local businesses when they leave school.

As we reporters file into our seats for Amazon's big product unveiling Wednesday morning, the air won't exactly be thick with suspense. Amazon has long been rumored to be launching a tablet, and recent leaks have spilled essentially all the crucial details. But what's more, Amazon must launch a tablet ... right now ... or else.

Yet despite the inevitability of a Kindle tablet ? the retailer's answer to the popularity of both the iPad and the Barnes & Noble Nook Color ??Amazon is taking a big risk. Not only is it alienating two of its most goliath frenemies, Apple and Google, but it's allegedly rushing its development process a bit, in order to get product out in front of the holiday season.

OK, so first, why does Amazon have to do it? For starters, despite the massive popularity of the e-ink Kindle, there is a huge limitation to the format. Sure it's light and has a battery that lasts practically forever, and its price is dropping precipitously every 6 to 12 months. But you can't do cookbooks, children's books or magazines on it, and you certainly can't stream TV.

Barnes & Noble is a book and magazine seller, and yet that company has launched a product that does more than anything Amazon's Kindle can. And word on the street is, B&N is ready to follow up the Nook Color with something more powerful.

Amazon is a media giant. It rakes in money not just for paper books and shiny silver discs, but digital copies of music, movies and TV shows. It works with the best media sales models too: it offers subscription all-you-can-eat streaming video, but it also lets you rent or buy premium new releases a la carte, and of course download MP3 albums too ??mostly at competitive prices.?

Where does all this content get eaten? Until recently, the PC was the only thing that could do it all, but people only gobble up so much on their PCs.

Smart TVs and set-top boxes are a nice budding category, but Amazon has to compete with a lot of small players, and the small fries can play much more nicely with Apple and Google and Microsoft. Amazon can't do that.

Amazon has done a lot of toe-dipping in the smartphone world, but so far not a lot of deep-diving. There are Kindle readers ??dare you to read a book on your phone???and now there's an Android cloud music player. But there's no media hub.?

Tablets! That's the ticket. With a 7-inch tablet, you can watch movies and read books, stream music and shop for more. The battery can last far longer than a computer, and you don't need an Itty Bitty Book Light when you're up past lights-out.?

Only two problems: Google's Android tablets have been overpriced and underappreciated in the general populace. And Apple wants to sell its own books, movies and music, and keeps a close eye on what does or doesn't happen in its App Store???the only place besides the Web that a third party can reach an iPad owner.?

The solution: Amazon has to build its own.

But Amazon doesn't have a ton of experience in hardware. And to make things worse, the team largely responsible for the success of the e-ink Kindle, an in-house design team called Lab 126, is allegedly not part of the development group working on the Kindle tablet.?

That came out in a recent expos? by GDGT's Ryan Block, along with the more unnerving notion that Amazon made some pretty severe compromises with industrial design and product specs in order to get a product in the hands of customers this Christmas. Scariest of all is Block's allegation that another Kindle tablet is due in the first quarter of 2012! And it'd be "the device Amazon really believes in."?

Even a compromised Amazon Kindle tablet???or Kindle Fire, according to the rumors???will sell well, for the reasons I outlined above. Barnes & Noble's Nook Color tablet was great but definitely underpowered, and even though it now has a richer operating system, an upgraded Nook Color would probably make the current model look pitiful.

But Amazon wouldn't want to come out looking like they half-baked their debut tablet.

Another concern is Amazon's use of Google's Android operating system. We always assumed Amazon???which runs its own Android app store???would embrace Android. But we also assumed it would ignore Google's rules and regulations, because it's counterproductive for Amazon to sell a rank-and-file Google product.

The result is a bit of a confusing situation: While Amazon's tablet will run an existing Android OS version, it will likely have its own look and feel, run a subset of specially adapted Android apps, and will not be part of the Android community. It certainly won't be anywhere near the front of the line for OS updates and other Google-granted perks.

The end result is that Amazon is going it alone. Any semblance of friendship with the other colossi is hereby chipped away, leaving behind the cold stare of competition.?

Does the company have what it takes? It certainly knows its way around media, and media seems to be crucial to a tablet's success. But unless Amazon sharpens its focus on the hardware and software development, and delivers quality gadgets, that cloud-based media goodness will be wasted.

BERLIN ? The leaders of Germany and Greece met in Berlin on Tuesday, buoying stock markets around the world with hopes they were finally preparing a comprehensive solution to the European debt crisis.

In response, Greek lawmakers approved a controversial new property tax Tuesday evening, passing it 154 votes to 143 against in the 300-member parliament.

Chancellor Angela Merkel's government downplayed speculation of bold new moves ahead of her meeting Tuesday with Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou but the simple gathering itself buoyed spirits in financial markets.

The current plan is to have Greece implement painful debt-reduction measures in exchange for rescue loans. Greece relies on funds from last year's euro110 billion ($149 billion) package, and European leaders have also agreed on a second euro109 billion bailout, although some details of that remain to be worked out.

Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos said his country will get the money. "The disbursement will be decided in time, in line with the course of our funding needs," he said Tuesday.

Speaking over chants from protesting ministry employees and tax office workers outside his department, Venizelos said Greek had made great efforts to achieve its fiscal targets, but that a "hyper-effort" was necessary to fully meet its commitments.

Experts, however, say the current course of austerity is untenable.

There is growing speculation in the markets that Greece's bailout creditors will look to impose bigger losses on Greece's private bondholders as well as recapitalizing Europe's banks and boosting the size of the eurozone's rescue fund. Talk of such a comprehensive package has helped turn sentiment around in stock markets this week following last week's turmoil.

So far, there's been no confirmation from Europe's capitals that such a comprehensive solution is being planned.

Venizelos said representatives from the International Monetary Fund, European Commission and European Central Bank will return to Athens this week. The so-called troika suspended their review in early September amid talk of missed targets and budget shortfalls.

In Berlin, Papandreou told a conference of the Federation of German Industries that "we are borrowing to repay" ? but also stressed that Europe needs to show it can get its act together.

"I can guarantee that Greece will live up to all its commitments," Papandreou said ahead of the evening meeting with Merkel.

The Greek government recently announced new austerity measures, including pension cuts and tax hikes.

The new property tax will be charged through electricity bills to make it easier for the state to collect, instead of going through Greece's unwieldy and inefficient tax system. Those who refuse to pay risk having their power cut off.

But the extra charge has deeply angered Greeks, who have already been through more than a year of sharp austerity that has seen salary and pension cuts and increased taxes across the board. State electricity company unionists have threatened not to collect the tax.

Speaking before the vote, Venizelos acknowledged the new tax was harsh on some, but stressed the government had no choice but to impose it as it fought to reduce its budget deficit.

"Clearly there will be categories of people who will not be able to pay this housing charge and this is a situation that will be resolved," he said. "But the most important thing is that we achieve the targets agreed to in 2011 and 2012."

Greeks have been outraged by the new measures after a year of austerity, and unions have responded with strikes and protests. Public transport workers walked off the job Tuesday for two days, and were to be joined by taxi drivers on Wednesday. Tax office and customs workers were also on strike.

It was an emotional season finale to end this season of Teen Mom. Certainly big changes are in store for all the girls. Looking back, I'd say this season was all about the moms struggling to discover themselves as adults. They fought to find an identity outside of being a "teen mom." Ultimately, young motherhood is a role that cannot be escaped. Unplanned pregnancy changes self-identity to the core. Being a mother is a life-long role.

In this heart-wrenching finale, we saw how being a parent is one of the most difficult and demanding jobs in the world. The fear of disappointing your child or being a bad influence is constant. Deciding what is best for you, your baby, and your future is a never-ending balancing act. A teen mother often doesn't have the fundamental foundation of an education, career, partner, or even home to start with.

Maci, Amber, Catelynn, and Farrah all struggle with being the best parents they can be. Farrah worries that bringing Sophia to Florida will bring more stress than relief. If Sophia stays with Debra and Michael, she will be well-cared for by family in a home she is comfortable and stable in. In Florida, she would always be in daycare and shuffled around while Farrah completes school. Florida is the best place for Farrah to secure a future for her small family, but it means sacrificing motherhood for a few years.

Amber hopes that Leah doesn't pick up on behavior that has defined all the women in her family. She wants to teach Leah that anger and violence aren't the best ways to communicate. Amber tries to instill these values while still struggling with them herself. She's not prepared to try to be a family with Gary until she can be sure it won't mean fighting tears them apart again.

Maci breaks down and confesses all her fears to Kyle. Being a mother is the hardest thing she's ever had to do, and she's so scared that she can't provide everything that her little boy deserves. She wants to marry Kyle because she wants to be able to give Bentley a real family.

With Tyler and Catelynn, we see their own sacrifice, and the effect a disappointing parent can have on a child. They decide not to invite Carly to their graduation because they fear their immediate families would make things too difficult, even though they've been talking about wanting her there for months. Then at the end of the episode April reveals that Butch has been sent back to prison. Tyler breaks down, largely out of disappointment. He had faith that his dad would keep his word and become clean for the first time in his life. The sadness in Tyler's eyes is proof of the unconditional love and belief children have in their parents.

Concern for your child is a life-long worry. From the second that baby is born, their well-being is always first in a mother's mind. Teens, who are children themselves, are not ready to shoulder that kind of responsibility. Even with a strong support system, they are not adults who have figured out their lives. Like we see in Maci and Tyler's eyes, disappointing your child is heart-wrenching. Protecting teens from unplanned pregnancy is a vital key to their future.

Carnivorous plant inspires super-slippery material

Water, oil, blood and insects alike slide swiftly off a new super-slippery material inspired by a carnivorous plant.

Scientists searching for clever materials sometimes borrow ideas from nature. Lotus leaves, for example, are famously water repellant, thanks to their textured surfaces which trap a cushion of air for water to slide down.

The leaves have inspired a range of so-called "superhydrophobic" materials. But these materials have trouble repelling oils and more complex liquids, which have lower surface tensions than water and can seep into the surface at the slightest pressure.

"Everybody's talking about the lotus leaf," says Joanna Aizenberg of Harvard University, whose lab designs and builds biomimetic materials to solve a range of problems. "But it's just one of many strategies that nature created to manage and control the interaction with liquid."

Now, a new material takes a cue from one of the plant world's few meat-eaters: the carnivorous pitcher plant Nepenthes . The plants prey on insects, whose oily feet normally allow them to walk up walls. But pitchers' tube-shaped leaves have microscopic bumps that hold a thin layer of water in place. The water repels the oils, sending hapless insects slipping straight into their gaping mouths.

"They just step on the rim, and immediately slide into the digestive juices," Aizenberg says.

Aizenberg realized that with the right choice of lubricating liquid, the pitcher plant's strategy could be adapted to repel virtually anything.

The researchers started with a textured substrate, which could be almost anything that is rough on the nanoscale, Aizenberg says. One good choice is Teflon, a fibrous material that is widely thought to be super-slippery itself.

Filling in the bumps

Their most slippery surface resulted when they added a layer of the perfluorinated fluid 3M Fluorinert FC-70, manufactured by the firm 3M, to Teflon. The liquid oozed into all the pores in the Teflon, and left a nanometres-thin layer of liquid at the top. The material still feels dry to the touch, and other liquids simply hydroplane off the surface, like a car sliding off a wet road. The team calls the material 'slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces,' or SLIPS.

"We call it SLIPS, because everything does," Aizenberg says. The materials could be useful for making self-cleaning windows, friction-free oil and water transport pipes, and safe and efficient blood transfusion devices, she adds.

SLIPS beat the lotus leaf in several arenas. They're more slippery ? liquids from water to oil to blood lose contact with the surface when it's tilted by an angle as shallow as 2 degrees, whereas liquids held to other surfaces tilted from 5 to 30 degrees. They can also recover from damage, because the lubricating liquid naturally seeps back in to any holes. And because liquid is incompressible, the material can be used at pressures equivalent to 7 kilometres underwater.

"It's interesting that it combines self-lubrication, self-healing and self-cleaning, which are different processes," says Michael Nosonovsky of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. "It's a new type of smart material."

Last week?s sports news included several stories involving ethics. Among them:

• The NASCAR auto racing organization is investigating suspicions that a driver may have spun his car intentionally in order to help a teammate, reports USA Today. Driver Jeff Gordon complained that Paul Menard may have purposely spun near the end of a race, forcing everyone to hold their positions under a racetrack caution, and thus preserve the front-running status of a Menard teammate. Menard has denied the charge, reports USA Today, although NASCAR officials say they will investigate.

• John Harbaugh, the coach of the Baltimore Ravens football team, last week said his linemen were ?100 percent ethical? and ?100 percent legal? in their blocking techniques and that the blocking scheme presents ?no danger whatsoever,? reports NBC Sports. The controversy evolved after a competing coach from the Pittsburgh Steelers said the Ravens were taking cheap shots at opponents? knees, an injury-prone area. While NBC Sports? Michael David Smith writes that ?Harbaugh is right that the blocks the Steelers were complaining about are legal,? he argues that ?claiming ?there is no danger whatsoever? seems to be taking it too far. Just because the blocks are allowed doesn?t mean they can?t injure someone.?

• Mohamed bin Hammam, who was a member of the executive committee of FIFA, the world governing body of soccer, lost the appeal of his lifetime ban from the sport, ESPN reports. Hammam was banned after FIFA?s ethics committee determined that he was part of a conspiracy to bribe officials to cast votes for him in his candidacy for president of the organization.

Nokia, the pioneer of cellular technology has been successfully running its social media campaigns within the organization. The three internal social media tools that are more popular among employees include BlogHub, VideoHub and Infopedia. In contrast to the traditional flow of internal communication from top management to the bottom level, BlogHub ensures that every employee has a voice to be heard. As the name implies, VideoHub allows posting of video clips by employees, on a daily basis. Infopedia is a wiki that enables collaboration and knowledge sharing within the organization.

IBM has an internal social network called BeeHive that serves three purposes ? connect with colleagues that one meets on interdepartmental or inter-divisional projects, showcase a project to wider audience within the organization and gather inputs to complete the project in the best way possible, connect with the top-level management that is not accessible by other traditional means. BeeHive is an excellent social model that facilitates communication and collaboration within a giant organization.

It?s not about the top executive dictating what needs to be done and when, it?s about providing individuals with the power to connect.?

No matter companies like social media or not, it is the need of the hour to integrate it with corporate communications. As Dominic Jones writes in her article Social media investor relations reaches a tipping point, "SOCIAL MEDIA IS NOW MAINSTREAM, and companies that haven?t yet started using social media in their IR programs are in danger of finding themselves talking to increasingly smaller audiences.?

Greek minister: focus on spending cuts in 2012 (AP)

ATHENS, Greece ? Under intense pressure from lenders to honor its deficit-cutting targets and with a forthcoming installment of its bailout package still up in the air, Greece has decided to adhere to another tax measure it sprang on a weary public last week.

Greece also chose to put off a harder task, streamlining a bloated and inefficient public sector, for 2012. An inner Cabinet meeting Sunday produced no new policies other than a commitment to focus on spending cuts in 2012 and, in the words of Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos, end up with a "less costly, smaller, better, smarter" public sector.

Before embarking on that mission, the government still must live up to its commitment to achieve its 2011 budget deficit goal of 7.6 percent of gross domestic product. When it became obvious earlier this month that there was a more than euro2 billion ($2.75 billion) shortfall in the budget, Greece's lenders ? the eurozone member countries, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund ? threatened to withhold the sixth installment of a euro110 billion rescue package agreed upon in May 2010.

In a near panic, the government came up the previous weekend with a property tax, to be levied in 2011 and 2012, that is expected to raise enough to plug the 2011 budget hole and help with the 2012 deficit.

The tax was met with strong protests from a public already reeling from salary cuts and the effects of a continuing recession, and there were voices raised for a tax revolt. Since the charge is going to appear in the coming electricity bills, the state electricity utility unionists threatened to block the mailing of the bills. The Communist Party has openly called for nonpayment of the charge.

As Venizelos said Sunday night after the meeting, these reactions led to skepticism among Greece's European partners about whether the government would be able to raise the projected revenue. At the meeting of EU and eurozone finance ministers in Wroclaw, Poland, on Friday and Saturday, Venizelos came under strong criticism and the meeting postponed the decision on the disbursement of the euro8 billion ($11 billion) installment. Speaking to Greek reporters in Poland on Saturday, a clearly concerned Venizelos said that Greece's cash reserves would not last long. They are set to run out in mid-October.

After consulting on the phone with Venizelos, Prime Minister George Papandreou, who was already in London en route to a weeklong U.S. trip to attend the U.N. General Assembly and the IMF annual meeting decided on Saturday to cancel his trip, saying the coming week would be "especially critical." At risk were, and still are, not only the installment from the 2010 rescue package but also a second bailout worth euro109 billion agreed by Greece's lenders last June 21.

The government's decision to go ahead with the property tax was strongly condemned by opposition leader Antonis Samaras, a conservative who has consistently called for lower taxes to jump-start the economy.

"This is no longer milking the cow, this is killing it," Samaras told a news conference Sunday.

In order to shrink the public sector, the government has announced plans to merge existing agencies, abolish others and put tens of thousands of employees on a "reserve" status at 60 percent of their pay.

But the agency mergers have not yet resulted in a single layoff, with employees shuffled from one agency to another: in one case, several employees at the debt-ridden Hellenic Railways have been transferred to public hospitals.

The tactic has left Greece's lenders very skeptical at the government's willingness to shrink the public sector. It now seems that, with its back to the wall and no wiggle room left, the ruling socialists are finally prepared to bite the bullet. But with the constitution expressly protecting civil servants' jobs, the government is looking for ways to go around that obstacle, first by firing contract workers and then tackling the core civil service.

Kelly Clarkson Unveils Stronger Track List

Singer reveals plans for multiple versions of the October 24 release, including a deluxe offering and a bonus EP.

Kelly Clarkson is inching her way toward her October 24 Stronger album release. The singer took to her official website to share with the world the songs that made the final cut.

Clarkson will release multiple versions of the album: standard, deluxe and a bonus EP. Thirteen songs made it to the standard edition of the album. They include her first single, "Mr. Know It All," plus "What Doesn't Kill You," "Dark Side," "Honestly," "You Love Me," "Einstein," "Standing in Front of You," "I Forgive You," "Hello," "The War Is Over," "Let Me Down," "You Can't Win" and "Breaking Your Own Heart."

The deluxe version of the album will include four additional tracks: "Don't You Wanna Stay?" (her already-released duet with Jason Aldean), "Alone," "Don't Be a Girl About It" and "The Sun Will Rise."

Those purchasing the bonus EP will get an additional six Smoakstack Session recordings: alternate versions of the album tracks "Hello," "The War Is Over," "You Love Me" and "The Sun Will Rise," plus her renditions of "If I Can't Have You" and "I Can't Make You Love Me."

Clarkson dropped her first single from the album, "Mr. Know It All," at the end of August. The track was written by Brett James (who has a country pedigree, having written for Carrie Underwood), Ester Dean (Beyoncé, Usher) and Dante Jones. Brian Kennedy (Chris Brown, Rihanna, Backstreet Boys) also co-wrote and produced the track.
