'Hunger Games' Soundtrack Tops Billboard Album Chart

After its $155 million box-office opening, "The Hunger Games" pulled off the rare double-play by landing its soundtrack at the top of the Billboard 200 charts in the same week. "The Hunger Games: Songs from District 12 and Beyond," sold 175,000 last week, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan.
The compilation, which features songs by Taylor Swift with the Civil Wars, as well as tunes by Maroon 5, the Decemberists, Miranda Lambert, Arcade Fire and Kid Cudi, sold just enough copies to once again keep Adele at #2, where her tenacious 21 sold another 130,000 copies.
After a five-year hiatus, the Shins returned with their fourth studio album, Port of Morrow, which landed at #3 (74,000), while rowdy hip-hop collective Odd Future debuted at #5 with OF Tape, Vol. 2. The other two new faces in the top 10 were singer Melanie Fiona with My Life (#7, 34,000) and 2011 Best New Artist Grammy winner Esperanza Spalding's Radio Music Society (#10, 25,000).
British boy band One Direction fell to #4 as sales of their debut, Up All Night, dropped by 69 percent to 55,000. Bruce Springsteen dipped two spots to #6 with Wrecking Ball (37,000), NOW 41 hung around at #8 (31,000) and Whitney Houston's Greatest Hits sold another 28,000 while moving down a few notches to #9.
Second-generation hip-hop royalty Diggy entered the charts at #13 with Unexpected Arrival (21,000), easy-on-the-eyes "American Idol" third-place finisher Casey James released his self-titled label bow, landing at #23 (14,000) and Woodie-winning MC Machine Gun Kelly snuck into the top 50 at #46 with is Half Naked & Almost Famous EP (9,000).
The deck will get shuffled all over again next week, when Madonna's MDNA is predicted to take the #1 spot with sales in excess of 325,000 copies. There will also likely be top 10 debuts by Lionel Richie, hawking his countrified hits duets album, Tuskegee, along with Florida rockers Shinedown.

Scientists at the University of Liverpool have developed a new method to detect proteins associated with longevity, which helps further our understanding into why some animals live longer than others.
The team looked at the genome of more than 30 mammalian species to identify proteins that evolve in connection with the longevity of a species. They found that a protein, important in responding to DNA damage, evolves and mutates in a non-random way in species that are longer-lived, suggesting that it is changing for a specific purpose. They found a similar pattern in proteins associated with metabolism, cholesterol and pathways involved in the recycling of proteins.
Findings show that if certain proteins are being selected by evolution to change in long-lived mammals like humans and elephants, then it is possible that these species have optimised pathways that repair molecular damage, compared to shorter-lived animals, such as mice.
The study, led by Dr Joao Pedro Magalhaes and postgraduate student, Yang Li, is the first to show evolutionary patterns in biological repair systems in long-lived animals and could, in the future, be used to help develop anti-ageing interventions by identifying proteins in long-lived species that better respond to, for example, DNA damage. Proteins associated with the degradation of damaged proteins, a process that has been connected to ageing, were also linked with the evolution of longevity in mammals.
Dr Magalhaes, from the University's Institute of Integrative Biology, said: "The genetic basis for longevity differences between species remains a major puzzle of biology. A mouse lives less than five years and yet humans can live to over 100 for example. If we can identify the proteins that allow some species to live longer than others we could use this knowledge to improve human health and slow the ageing process.
"We developed a method to detect proteins whose molecular evolution correlates with longevity of a species. The proteins we detected changed in a particular pattern, suggesting that evolution of these proteins was not by accident, but rather by design to cope with the biological processes impacted by ageing, such as DNA damage. The results suggest that long-lived animals were able to optimise bodily repair which will help them fend off the ageing process."

There is nothing more quintessentially English than a good cup of tea. In fact, along with bulldogs, bowler hats and red telephone boxes, tea drinking has come to symbolize the very essence of the British experience. First a bit of history about the English Tea trade:
Tea came to Britain in the 16th century when Dutch merchants first imported this Asian beverage from China. The Chinese had been drinking tea for centuries (with limited supplies of clean water, boiling it with aromatic leaves was a good way to ensure a safe and tasty drink).
By the 17th century, tea drinking was in fashion throughout Europe and British entrepreneurs were quick to capitalize on the trend. The famous Twinings company established a warehouse in London in 1706 and is still in business today.

Fortnum and Mason is another institution which opened just a year after Twinings, in 1707, selling to the royal household and the local gentry. When in London, visit ?Fortnums?, as they are known, and see the liveried shop assistants.
In fact, one of London?s best-loved institutions also has it roots in the tea trade. In 1834, Henry Charles Harrod opened a tea wholesaler in the East End. Today Harrod?s in London?s Knightsbridge is one of the world?s most famous department stores.
The world?s taste for tea made many men rich and helped establish Britain as an international commercial powerhouse. And, of course, where there is money to be made there is money to be taxed: it was Britain?s taxation of tea in the 1700?s that helped fuel the American independence movement!
English tea times:
In Britain there are different tea drinking occasions associated with different times of day.

Unfold your napkin and place it in your lap (should you need to leave the table, place your napkin on your chair). Put sugar in your cup first, then a lemon slice if you wish. Milk goes in after the tea is poured. Lemon and milk are never used together and cream is never added to tea. Do not stir in a circular motion ? gently move the tea back and forth with your spoon. Never leave your spoon in your teacup ? leave it on the saucer behind the cup. Split scones horizontally with your knife and add cream and lemon curds to you plate. Spread the cream and curds on your scone before each bite.
It is a misconception that polite tea drinkers extend their little fingers when holding a cup (although it is a good practice to handle food with only three fingers).

A natural prostate pill may be a useful tool for improving prostate health in men. Now, a study suggests that a botanical formula may be effective for fighting prostate cancer.
In a paper published in The International Journal of Oncology, researchers found that a botanical formula offered multiple cancer-fighting mechanisms that combine to make it a potentially powerful prostate cancer treatment. In the study, researchers from Indiana University administered the formula to mice harboring human prostate tumors. They found that the formula, which is comprised of botanical extracts, medicinal mushrooms and antioxidants, suppressed the growth of these tumors by 27 percent. Additionally, it prevented the development of numerous cancer-causing genes while promoting the growth of those that fight cancerous cells.
Furthermore, the treatment appears to have no negative side effects. This is particularly beneficial, as traditional prostate cancer treatments may have a variety of side effects, including urinary, bowel and erectile dysfunctions.
This is the third significant study to test this particular formula's effectiveness in fighting prostate cancer, and each one has yielded positive results. It should be noted that it has yet to be tested on human subjects.
While this study is encouraging, men should still take active steps to promote prostate health. Such steps may include taking a natural prostate pill, eating healthy and exercising.

Annan says Syria accepts peace plan

Updated at 11:34 a.m. ET: Syria accepted a ceasefire and peace plan drawn up by Kofi Annan, the U.N. and Arab League special envoy said on Tuesday, even as Syrian troops thrust into Lebanon to battle rebels who had taken refuge there.
On a two-day visit to Beijing, Annan told Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao that he faced a long and difficult task in his mission to end fighting in Syria, but global cooperation with China and other countries was the only way to do it.
"I indicated that I had received a response from the Syrian government and will be making it public today, which is positive, and we hope to work with them to translate it into action," Annan told reporters in Beijing after meeting Wen.
"I have a six-point plan which the Security Council has endorsed, dealing with issues of political discussions, withdrawal of heavy weapons and troops from population centers, humanitarian assistance being allowed in unimpeded, release of prisoners, freedom of movement and access to journalists to go in and out," he said. "So we will need to see how we move ahead and implement this agreement that they have accepted."

However, the U.S. ambassador to Syria, Robert Ford, expressed skepticism about the development, saying it would be best to look foraction, not words from Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Ford told lawmakers in Washington that he had no information beyond the press reports of the development.
"We will see now in the days ahead what exactly Assad has said,'' Ford said at a hearing on human rights in Syria.
The diplomat, who left Syria last month because of the violence there, added: "I have to tell you that my own experience with him is you want to see steps on the ground and not just take his word at face value."
The United Nations said on Tuesday that more than 9,000 civilians have been killed in the Syrian government's yearlong assault on protesters opposed to Assad, an increase of nearly 1,000 over its previous estimate.
"Violence on the ground has continued unabated, resulting in scores of people killed and injured," Robert Serry, the U.N. special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, told the 15-nation Security Council.
"Credible estimates put the total death toll since the beginning of the uprising one year ago to more than 9,000," he said. "It is urgent to stop the fighting and prevent a further violent escalation of the conflict."
The Syrian opposition, meanwhile, welcomed the government's acceptance of a U.N. peace plan, a member of the Syrian National Council said.
Syria's rebel fighters are desperate for arms and ammunition. Members of the Free Syrian Army were forced from Idlib - one of the last rebel strongholds. ITN's John Irvine reports from outskirts of Idlib, the north western city which rebels surrendered last week.
Bassma Kodmani told The Associated Press by telephone that "we welcome all acceptance by the regime of a plan that could allow the repression and bloodbath to stop."
She is a Paris-based member of the opposition Syrian National Council.
"We hope that we can move toward a peace process," she said.

LONDON (Reuters) - Scientists have discovered how electroconvulsive or electric shock therapy - a controversial but effective treatment - acts on the brains of severely depressed people and say the finding could help improve diagnosis and treatment of mental illness.
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) involves first anaesthetizing the patient and then electrically inducing a seizure.
It has a controversial reputation - gained in part because of its role in the 1975 film "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" starring Jack Nicholson - but is a potent and effective treatment for patients with mood disorders like severe depression.
Yet despite it being used successfully in clinical practice around the world for more than 70 years, scientists have until now not been entirely clear how or why it works.
Now a team from Aberdeen University in Scotland has shown for the first time that ECT affects the way different parts of the brain involved in depression communicate with each other.
In a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) journal they found ECT appears to turn down overactive connections between parts of the brain that control mood and parts that control thinking and concentrating.
This stops the overwhelming impact that depression has on patients' ability to enjoy life and carry out day-to-day activities, they said.
"We've solved a 70-year-old therapeutic riddle," said Ian Reid, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Aberdeen who led the study.
"Our key finding is that if you compare the connections in the brain before and after ECT, ECT reduces the connection strength," he said in a statement.
"For the first time we can point to something that ECT does in the brain that makes sense in the context of what we think is wrong in people who are depressed."
In recent years, experts have developed a new theory on how depression affects the brain that suggests there is a "hyperconnection" between the areas of the brain involved in emotional processing and mood change and the parts of the brain involved in thinking and concentrating.
David Nutt, a professor of neuropsychopharmacology at Imperial College London who was not involved in the ECT study, said its findings "make a lot of sense.
"The disabling of connections between different areas of the brain is what I would have predicted from the depression literature," he said in an emailed comment.
He said the results also chime with a study Nutt published in January which found that psilocybin, the active ingredient in the psychedelic drug known as magic mushrooms, also disrupts this network of connections and may also be effective in treating severe depression.
The electrotherapy study involved using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to scan the brains of nine severely depressed patients before and after ECT and then applying complex mathematical analysis to investigate brain connectivity.
Aberdeen University's chair of neuroimaging Christian Schwarzbauer, who devised the new method for analyzing the connectivity data, said it enabled the team to see to what extent more than 25,000 different brain areas communicated with each other.
He said the new method could also be applied to a wide range of other brain disorders such as schizophrenia, autism, or dementia, and "may lead to a better understanding of the underlying disease mechanisms and the development of new diagnostic tools."
The researchers said they now hope to continue monitoring the patients to see if the depression and hyperconnectivity returns. They also want to compare their ECT findings with the effects of other therapies used to treat depression such as psychotherapy and anti-depressants.

Chelsea and its former Benfica players David Luiz and Ramires will travel to play the first leg in Lisbon, after its comeback victory in extra time against Napoli on Wednesday.
"We came into it looking for an away game in the first leg, which we got," Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay said. "We're really just delighted to be here."
Chelsea's run is seen as a last chance to lift the trophy for the core group of Mourinho-era players, who lost the 2008 final in a penalty shootout against Manchester United.
"Everyone knows Chelsea's potential," Benfica sports director and former player Rui Costa said, adding: "We're ready for anything."

IT skills gap affecting business operations, CompTIA study says ...
Eight in ten organizations say their business operations are impacted by gaps in the skill sets of their information technology (IT) staffs, according to new research published today byCompTIA,?the non-profit association for the IT industry.
The dynamic, fast-changing nature of technology and a lack of training resources are the biggest factors contributing to the skills gap, CompTIA?s?State of the IT Skills Gap?study reveals. To close the gap, a majority of companies surveyed say they intend to devote more resources to training.
Skills shortcomings affect productivity
?Even as the importance of technology to business success grows exponentially, few organizations are exactly or even very close to where they want to be with technology utilization and staff skill levels,? said?Terry Erdle, executive vice president, skills certification, CompTIA. ?These gaps are hampering business success.?
The CompTIA study shows that IT skills shortcomings impact staff productivity (cited by 41 percent of responding companies), customer service and engagement (32 percent) and security (31 percent).
It also impacts speed to market for IT businesses at a higher rate (34 percent) than other industries (20 percent). Profitability is also affected, with 23 percent of small companies feeling the pinch on the bottom line compared to 15 percent of large and medium firms.
?Millions of businesses are clearly not where they want to be when it comes to optimizing their utilization of technology and in the skill levels of their IT staffs.? Erdle said. ?Even modest improvements in these two areas would yield tremendous benefits in operational efficiencies, business productivity and economic growth.?
IT Priorities Provide Clues to Skills Needs
Companies say their IT workers come up short in skills in both existing core areas such as security, data storage, refreshing aging equipment, improving network infrastructure and disaster recovery and business continuity; and emerging areas such as business process automation, mobility, collaboration and virtualization.
?With core technologies, new options for their usage translate to the need for more and different skills,? said?Amy Carrado, director, market research, CompTIA. ?Emerging areas will require IT staff and end users to have sufficient new knowledge bases and skill sets to maximize the return on technology investment.?
Nearly six in ten organizations (57 percent) intend to address their IT skills gap challenges by training or retraining existing staff in areas where skills are lacking.
?The expected commitment to more education is an encouraging sign,? Erdle said. ?IT professionals have a strong propensity for lifelong learning and skills enhancement, so the large majority will welcome the opportunity to broaden their knowledge. An investment in new IT education and training will deliver strong return on investment to the business?s bottom line.?
