How to Keep Border Guards From Reading Your Laptop

Did you know that U.S. immigration agents can seize your laptop, cellphone, digital camera and any other electronic devices at the U.S. border, no justification required?

The U.S. government's ability to search citizens at the border without a warrant is nothing new -- it dates back to the 1977 Supreme Court ruling in United States v. Ramsey. But as digital technologies become more prevalent, this so-called "exception to the Fourth Amendment" has come under renewed scrutiny.

"The problem is, now people bring with them a lot more stuff — not physically, but digitally," said Hanni Fakhoury, a staff attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a nonprofit digital rights group based in San Francisco.

"Computers, cellphones, tablets have lots of information," Fakhoury said. "The issue becomes: Do the prior justifications of a broad searching authority still extend to [the contents of] digital devices?"

MORE: 7 Computer-Security Fixes to Make Right Now

The answer to that question remains unclear. For now, there's no way you can prevent the feds from getting the gadgets if they want them — but you can make sure none of your sensitive data can be read.

Of course, the No. 1 way to safeguard your digital privacy is to not bring any digital devices with you to the border. But for many people, going without laptops and mobile phones is just not an option.

Here are some suggestions for what you can do to keep your sensitive data close to hand, but safe from prying eyes.

Bring a clean computer to the border

If you have the cash to burn, you can buy a cheap laptop or tablet to bring with you across the border. Then, before you leave on your trip, put all the documents and accounts you'll need in a secure cloud storage system.

Google Docs works, but you can also consider more secure cloud storage options such as SpiderOak, as well as the cloud-encryption software BoxCryptor.

So long as you're careful not to store any documents from the cloud onto your computer, you're not technically bringing any data to the border.

MORE: 13 Security and Privacy Tips for the Truly Paranoid

There's another way to bring a clean computer to the border: Wipe your own. But before you do, purchase an external hard drive and use it to create an image backup of your computer.

After that, you'll need to securely wipe everything on your laptop. You can do this by going into your computer's control panel and doing a factory reset, or you can install a whole new operating system on your computer, which will overwrite all of your computer's contents.

Leave the external hard drive at home, and take your newly blank laptop with you to the border.  Once you get home, you can copy your hard drive's contents back onto your laptop and get back to work.

These methods are expensive, as they require spending at least a hundred dollars for a good external hard drive, or even more for a laptop that you'll rarely use.

The advantage is that if a border agent requests to view your device, you can comply without worrying about your privacy. This might also be the way to go if you're particularly eager to avoid a confrontation at the border.

The Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination does protect you from having to hand over your password, even at the border. Yet many people feel uncomfortable saying "no" to a federal official. If the only devices you bring to the border are clean, even handing over your password won't compromise your data.

Encrypt your data

Another option is to encrypt the data on your devices. This will take more time than purchasing a whole new device, especially if you're new to encryption. But it's not too difficult once you've gotten the hang of it, and you can encrypt your data with the same secure algorithms used by the military without spending a dollar.

On your computer, programs such as the free open-source program TrueCrypt can encrypt a few of your documents, or even your entire hard drive. The only way to see your data is to enter a password.

MORE: 13 Free Software That Encrypt Your Data

TrueCrypt also has a feature that lets you create a decoy password, so that you cannot only lock your data up, but also hide it away in what's called a "hidden volume."

Think of it as a box within a box — the only difference is that anyone looking in the outer box won't be able to tell that the inner box is there.

If someone demands access to your encrypted files, you can give them the password to the outer box, or volume, and they'll be able to see any documents you chose to store in that area.

However, they won't even know that your truly sensitive data is stored in a second layer of encryption.

For your part, you can access the hidden volume by entering the hidden volume's password instead of the outer volume's. In this way, the outer volume, and the outer volume password, are merely dummies you can surrender to others so that it seems like you're complying.

Just remember to choose a secure password, preferably more than 10 random characters in length. You can also use a passphrase, such as a sentence or verse, so long as it's more than 50 characters in length.

You may be wondering: Does encryption make you look more suspicious to border agents and other security personnel?

The official answer is no. According to the Supreme Court case United States v. Cotterman, which ruled that border inspectors need to prove "reasonable suspicion" before conducting a forensic test on a seized device, encryption alone is not to be considered suspicious.

Unofficially, however, Fakhoury says that "the government takes the position that [encryption] is a sign of someone trying to hide something."

Some of the documents leaked by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden, for example, suggest that intelligence agencies pay extra attention to encrypted communications, and that a legal loophole allows the agencies to store these encrypted communications for a longer period of time.

So if you take a computer with encrypted documents across the border, you should prepare to spend some extra time in customs, as you might find yourself being detained.

You don't have to give up your password or passphrase, but if you'd like to avoid the stress and hassle entirely, extensive encryption might not be your best option.

Computers aren't the only data storage devices you have to worry about at the border. Nowadays, it's possible to go without your laptop for a few days. But your mobile phone? Not so much.

Most phones contain contacts, emails, banking and credit card info from shopping apps, location-based data and tracking information, photos and more.

Despite this wealth of sensitive data, there are some challenges to secure storage on a mobile phone, challenges that don't exist with computers. For one, it's more difficult to truly delete files on a mobile phone.

If you're a customer of T-Mobile or AT&T, or any other carrier that uses the international Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) standard, you can buy a cheap phone and move your SIM card into it.

That way, you can leave your data-rich phone at home and people will still be able to contact you using your existing number.

If you put a passcode on an iPhone, the device will also encrypt its data using that passcode as the key, thus adding another layer of security.

If you have an Android smartphone you can use the "Encrypt Phone" feature to secure your data. There are also several apps that provide strong additional encryption, such as "SSE-Universal Encryption App" and "WhisperCore."

You can also use encrypted messaging services like Wickr and Silent Text that can securely delete messages soon after they're sent.

'I'll take care of it': Bulger strangled Boston woman, ex-crony testifies

Debra Davis was murdered in 1981. In court on Friday, her former boyfriend, Stephen Flemmi testified that James "Whitey" Bulger strangled her.

By Tracy Connor, Staff Writer, NBC News

As James "Whitey" Bulger stewed at the defense table, his former partner in crime took the witness stand Friday and portrayed him as a rat and a lady-killer.

In chilling detail, Boston gangster Stephen "The Rifleman" Flemmi described how Bulger allegedly orchestrated and carried out the murder of Flemmi's girlfriend ? strangling her with his bare hands as he dragged her down a flight of stairs and making Flemmi dig a riverbank grave.

Flemmi, 79, who is serving life after admitting to 10 murders, said he didn't want to kill Debra Davis but Bulger thought she was a distraction and knew too much about the Winter Hill Gang's relationship with corrupt FBI agents.

One night in 1981, Bulger had him bring the 26-year-old Davis to an empty house in South Boston.

"She walked in the entrance and he grabbed her by the neck," Flemmi said.

Bulger knew his right-hand man couldn't bring himself to do the deed.

"I'll take care of it," Bulger supposedly told Flemmi.

He grabbed Davis around the throat "and strangled her," continuing to choke her as he took her down the stairs to the basement, Flemmi said.

Flemmi told the court he wrapped his dead girlfriend in a tarp and when it got dark, he and Bulger went to the Neponsit River with the corpse and shovels.

Bulger, he said, sat and watched while he dug the hole.

Flemmi said he would be affected by his mistress' fate "until the day I die." At least one juror shed tears as he testified, the Boston Herald reported.

Davis' brother, Steve Davis, said he wanted to "lash out" during the testimony but didn't want to get thrown out of court like he did in 2003 when Flemmi pleaded guilty.

"It's been like throwing salt on an open wound," he said of the courtroom discussion of his sister. "I'm tired of it. I just want this case to end."

The tale of Davis's death capped a day of testimony from Flemmi that spanned decades and included stories of 1960s gangland figures with nicknames like Punchy, Wimpy and Suitcase.

In quick succession, he recounted murder after murder, including the 1975 slaying of loose-lipped tavern owner Edward Connors. He said Bulger emptied a double-barreled shotgun and a pistol on a phone booth where Connors was cornered and that he also fired.

U.S. Attorney's Office of Massachusetts via Reuters

Bar owner Eddie Connors' body is shown lying in a phone booth after a 1975 shooting allegedly carried out by James "Whitey" Bulger.

??We just stepped out from the side of the building ? the garage ? and shot him,?? Flemmi said. ??We just fired on him.??

After Flemmi first took the stand Thursday afternoon for just 15 minutes, he and Bulger traded hard stares and angry remarks. There were no fireworks Friday, but reporters tweeted that Bulger, 83, appeared flushed with controlled anger as Flemmi wrapped up his testimony.

Bulger, who spent 16 years on the lam before being nabbed in 2011, has reportedly insisted that he would never kill a woman ? although he's charged with the murder of two, including Davis.

He's also infuriated by any suggestion that he was a government informant who ratted out mobsters in exchange for protection from rogue law-enforcement agents.

Flemmi ? who was transferred to a more comfortable prison and escaped the death penalty as part of his cooperation agreement with the feds ? said he heard Bulger give information to crooked FBI agent John Connolly hundreds of times.

"Who did most of the talking at these meetings?" prosecutor Fred Wyshak asked.

"James Bulger," Flemmi said.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Google Play Music All Access extends to New Zealand and Australia

Google Play Music All Access extends to New Zealand and Australia

When Google Music received the huge improvement of All Access unlimited streaming of music to take on Pandora and Spotify, many were sad to hear it was only for the US. Google?s just pushed Music All Access and Google Play Books to multiple new regions and countries and figured a quick shout out was in order.

Screen-Shot-2013-05-29-at-3.55.04-PM-540x383

Google Play Music All Access is the biggest news here, as it?s no longer a US exclusive. While big markets are still waiting for it, as I?m sure Google?s hard at work dealing with record labels, All Access can now be enjoyed in New Zealand and Australia. Down under can enjoy some classic tunes Google style.

According to a Google Support Page we can expect more regions in the future, but sadly have nothing to announce. Google Music is my new go-to music option, and I?ve since uninstalled Rdio and Spotify so the few new areas should be happy to give it a try. Too bad the discounted trial ended in June, and now you?ll be charged $9.99 per month for unlimited music.

Then according to Google multiple countries should now be seeing Google Play Books in their market on devices and the web. According to what we?re hearing Books are now in places like Romania, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, Denmark, Greece and even Hungary. Oh and we almost forgot Poland and Finland both have access now too. Hopefully Google Music reaches more locations soon, and we?ll report once we learn anything else.

Faulty charger, not iPhone, could have killed Chinese stewardess

A Chinese television broadcast has demonstrated the possibility faulty chargers could have caused the death of a Chinese air stewardess electrocuted when she answered phonecalls on a charging iPhone spread.?

A report by national broadcaster CCTV?suggested the charger in the stewardess electrocution case might not be a genuine Apple product, and the phone was not an iPhone 5 but an iPhone 4.

In the TV footage, CCTV showed the use of a charger which looked like a genuine Apple charger, combined with a Hong Kong-style plug and aconverter.

1.20130716231747

Both the plug and converter are available online including China's biggest online store, Taobao.com, with prices ranging from 3.8 yuan (US$0.62) to 55 yuan (US$9) for the charger, and 0.66 yuan (USD 0.1) to 9.9 yuan (US$1.6) for the converter.?

If either was faulty, they could have become the lethal combination that resulted in the premature death of the 23-year-old stewardess.

convert6
Screenshot of adapter sold on Taobao.com.

According to a report published Tuesday on local news site?Xia Men Wang, in most cases, consumers would not be able to trace the manufacturer of goods available on the lower price range since these are likely made in unregistered workshops in the southern provinces of China where there is no quality control, considering their exceptionally low prices.

For products on the higher price range, such as a charger that sells for 55 yuan on Taobao.com, even if the charger was a genuine Apple-issued one, the purchase is still technically illegal since such items were probably smuggled into China in the first place. In most instances, these would likely have been dismantled, reassembled, and redistributed through channels like online stores.

According to a Beijing News's report in 2012, Shenzhen customs arrested over 100 people for smuggling 500 million yuan (USD 81.5 million) worth of Apple products?and selling them on Taobao.?

Iraq attacks make for deadly start to holy month

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Ramadan this year is shaping up to be the deadliest in Iraq since a bloody insurgency and rampant sectarian killings pushed the country to the edge of civil war in the wake of the U.S.-led invasion that ousted Saddam Hussein.

Suicide attacks, car bombings and other violence have killed more than 160 Iraqis just seven days into the Islamic holy month. The death toll in the first week of Ramadan hasn't been that high since 2007, intensifying fears that Iraq is slipping back into widespread chaos.

There seems to be little pattern in the range of targets, adding to the sense of unease in what is meant to be a month of spiritual growth and generosity.

Several of those killed over the past week died at a busy northern teashop while playing mehebis, a game where players hope to win sweets by guessing who among their opposing team is hiding a ring in their hands. Others were slain as they swam with friends, or as they shopped for festive evening dinners, or made their way home from mosques after late-night prayers.

Even for Iraqis who have grown used to hearing about random violence, day after day of double-digit death tolls makes for a worrying trend.

Many are choosing to stay home after breaking their dawn-to-dusk fast rather than venture out for festive family get-togethers and late-night cafe sessions, worrying they could be among the next victims.

"Al-Qaida and other terrorist groups ... have a better ability to move around and attack targets whenever it suits them," said Qais Hameed, an engineer and father of three from eastern Baghdad who quit going to a nearby coffee shop after breaking his daily fast. "This just shows that these terrorist groups are getting stronger while our security forces are getting weaker."

The bloodshed during Ramadan is an extension of a surge of attacks that has been roiling Iraq since the spring. It follows months of rallies by Iraq's minority Sunnis against the Shiite-led government over what they contend is second-class treatment and the unfair use of tough anti-terrorism measures against their sect.

The killings significantly picked up after Iraqi security forces launched a heavy-handed crackdown on a Sunni protest camp in the northern town of Hawija on April 23. A ferocious backlash followed the raid, with deadly bomb attacks and the return of sporadic gunbattles between insurgents and soldiers ? this time members of the Iraqi security forces rather than U.S. troops.

Ramadan, one of the holiest periods of the Islamic calendar, appears to be following that worrisome trend. It was always a popular period for attacks during the worst days of Iraq's violence as Shiite and Sunni extremists battled each other as well as U.S. forces.

The first Ramadan following the 2003 U.S.-led invasion began with a blistering wave of suicide bombings at police stations and the Red Cross headquarters.

In the years that followed, American military commanders braced for a surge in violence during the holy month. In 2007, 934 people were killed during Ramadan, including 236 the first week, according to an Associated Press count.

But as the war wound down, so did violence during the holy month.

"Ramadan used to be a bad month (for violence), but then over recent years it became a relatively quiet month," said John Drake, an Iraq specialist for the British-based AKE security consulting firm.

But, Drake added, "it already looks like this trend is being reversed."

U.N. figures show more than 2,500 Iraqis killed and many more wounded from April through June of this year. Another 331 have died so far in July, including two policemen targeted by gunmen in and around the restive northern city of Mosul on Wednesday, according to an AP count.

In a report released this week, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon described the scale of violence in recent months as alarming and said "rising inter-sectarian tensions are posing a major threat to stability and security in Iraq." Ban also warned that the increasingly sectarian-charged civil war raging in neighboring Syria is affecting Iraq's own political stability.

Although Iraq is officially neutral in the conflict, U.S. officials charge that it continues to allow flights suspected of carrying Iranian arms to transit its airspace. Iraqi officials have carried out some spot checks of Iranian planes and say they've found nothing. Iraqi fighters are meanwhile traveling to fight in Syria, with Shiites fighting alongside regime forces and Iraq's al-Qaida arm, now known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, siding with the mostly Sunni rebels.

No one has claimed responsibility for many of the terrorist attacks. But the indiscriminate and often coordinated bombings used in most of the attacks are a favorite tactic of al-Qaida, which hopes to stoke sectarian hatred and undermine Iraq's Shiite-led government.

Al-Qaida and other Sunni fundamentalists consider Shiites to be infidels. In the group's extremist ideology, acts of jihad including suicide bombings that are carried out during Ramadan are seen as more blessed than at other times of the year.

"The attackers believe that to martyr themselves during the holy month guarantees them some sort of benefit in the afterlife," said Drake, the security expert.

Interior Ministry spokesman Saad Maan Ibrahim agreed that militants' heightened spiritual fervor during Ramadan is partly to blame, along with the fact that large crowds often gather at soft targets such as mosques and cafes during Ramadan, giving attackers a chance to kill several people at once, he said.

A senior Iraqi intelligence official, who insisted on anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to journalists, offered a more mundane rationale.

"Security forces tend to speed up the searching process before iftar so they don't delay people who are fasting," he said, referring to the evening meal that ends the daylong Ramadan fast.

Ramadan last year also got off to a deadly start, with more than 140 killed during the first week. Unlike this year's daily drumbeat of violence, most of those died during a single dark day of attacks claimed by al-Qaida. Some days saw no deaths reported at all ? something that has yet to happen this time around.

High Blood Pressure Increasing in Children

More children have elevated blood pressure than before, and both increasing obesity rates and higher salt intake are to blame, according to a new study.

The researchers found that 19.2 percent of U.S. boys between ages 8 and 17 had high blood pressure, according to a national survey conducted between 1999 and 2008. That's up from 15.8 percent who had high blood pressure according to a 1988-1994 survey.

The percentage of girls with high blood pressure rose to 12.6 percent in the recent survey, from 8.2 percent in the older one.

The survey also showed that children with the greatest sodium intake (more than 3,450 milligram daily) were 36 percent more likely than those with the lowest intake (less than 2300 milligram daily) to have elevated blood pressure.

Increased risk of high blood pressure in the children was linked to higher weight, larger waistlines and eating more sodium than recommended, the researchers said.

Until now, "there's been very little evidence to support an effect of salt on blood pressure in children, while in adults, the relationship between salt and blood pressure is well substantiated," said study researcher Dr. Bonita Falkner, professor of medicine and pediatrics at Thomas Jefferson University.

Because of changes in the food supply and increased consumption of processed foods, dietary sodium intake has increased in U.S. children, as well as adults, the researchers said.

Up to 80 percent of people's excess salt intake comes from processed food, Falkner said. "It's hidden. You can't really taste it or feel it," she said.

In adults, blood pressure should normally be less than 120/80 mm Hg. However, in children and teens, blood pressure norms vary according to age, sex and height. [10 Ways to Promote Kids' Healthy Eating Habits]

Current dietary guidelines for Americans recommend that adults in general should consume less than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day. However, adults still consume an average of 3,400 milligrams per day, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In the study, more than 80 percent of children in the studies had a daily sodium intake of more than 2,300 milligrams.

"Everyone expects sodium intake will continue to go up," said Bernard Rosner, who also worked on the study and is a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. "It seems there's been a little bit of listening to dietary recommendations, but not a lot."

The results also showed more a greater percentage of children were overweight in the second period, and children of both sexes, especially girls, had bigger waistlines on average.

The children in the study were a sample from the general population, not children who are in medical centers getting treated, meaning that the elevated blood pressure may be a hidden problem in many of them, the researchers said.

In severe cases of hypertension in children, a doctor may perform tests to check possible kidney disease, heart defects or hormone disorders.

The general treatment for children with elevated blood pressure is lifestyle changes, such as eating a healthier diet and engaging in more physical activity, the researchers said.

"Parents need to do everything they can to prevent obesity in their child, [an effort] which can be extraordinarily challenging," Falkner said.

She suggested trying to have regular meals and limiting processed food, as well as high fat, high salt and high sugar food. This may enable a child to maintain a natural appetite and metabolism that avoids obesity, Falkner said.

"It's a big issue," she said. "Hidden salt in processed food is a health issue for the population, and the food industry would not like to hear this."?

The study was published today (July 15) in the journal Hypertension.

tiny Business Branding ? fragment 2

Every runt business branding peril revolves around a ticket image. So, how do you initiate compose your image? Well, ask yourself, ?When I say my label name, what report do I want my customers to have in their mind? ?

launch with your product/service. You have to understand your product and what its well-known benefits are.

Then secondly, search for at your customers and explore what their principal wants and desires are and ogle where the fit with your product benefits is.

For example, Hertz preempted ?urge?, i.e. no one else has related urge to car rental before. It is critical to the car renter, to the business car renter that is, getting in and out of the airport swiftly, then owning that support in your mind and having the perception that if I rent from Hertz I will procure my car faster than if I rent from Avis created more business for Hertz.

The third thing is to track your competition. Most petite businesses do not do that. You should know every single thing that every articulate competitor does on a daily basis in the business you?re in. If your competition down the street starts running a two-for-one deal and you?re not aware of it and you?re not acting, it can really injure your business.

Most brands only stand for one essential support at a time. People don?t carry multiple benefits about a label in their head. interpret what your heed stands for.

When people consider of you as a massage therapist or as a nutritionist, what image do you want in their mind and what top-of-mind statement do you want them to recite when they judge of your company?

Say, ?What can I beget, within my niche/category, what can I do that?s preemptive that will perform my note seem unusual within my niche/category?

Try and occupy a customer aid by preempting it. In other words, if you do a profitable job communicating that your note stands for ?Supercallifragilisticexpialidocious?, your competitor would be very foolish to near along and try to duplicate that.

I?ll give you an example: freeze-dried coffee was invented by General Foods. Maxim, their first price (product ticket) was a breakthrough in instant coffee, and their whole positioning/USP was ?tastes unprejudiced like original ground coffee.?

They launched very successfully with that positioning/customer attend and made Maxim a major note. Then Nestle came along and launched a product called Taster?s Choice and actually copied Maxim?s trace positioning. Then, Maxim made the mistake of inviting away from its positioning and left Taster?s Choice to acquire it.

Taster?s Choice overtook them and to this day owns the category. Maxim is a little stamp, and yet, they pioneered it and owned what was originally a 60% market part.

Another option is to preempt ?borrowed customer benefits?. By ?borrowed? I don?t mean benefits that are derived from your product/company directly but a support that is derived from someone or something else. For example, Mars is probably the largest chocolate company in the world, but they?re also a major food company. They produce Uncle Ben?s rice, they accomplish Mayo, Suzie Wong, they effect all kinds of food products.

They?re also one of the largest pet food companies in the world. Mars created a campaign for a notice called Pedigree and the positioning was ?top breeders recommend it.?

They rolled it out around the world by buying up pet food companies and stuck that campaign on top of whatever the product was. And it worked every time.

For microscopic business branding, the lesson is when you do a generous job owning/preempting the lawful customer wait on, it can fabricate you Nr. 1 in your market. And, it is actually possible to transfer your price image/USP to different products within a category or a niche.

Analyst: Apple iPhone 5S Production to Begin This Month

iPhone 5S rumor

Apple is gearing up to begin production on the iPhone 5S later this month with the goal of releasing it in late September or early October, Jefferies analyst Peter Misek wrote in a note to investors this morning.

In addition to the iPhone 5S, Apple also last month started production of the much-rumored lower-cost iPhone, which will be priced at around $300 to $400, he added.

Misek believes Apple will put in orders for 25 to 30 million iPhone units during the fall quarter, then ramp up to 50 to 55 million units during the holiday period. For the quarter beginning in December, Apple plans to build around 5 million iPhone 4S handsets, 20 million low-cost iPhones, and 25 million iPhone 5S handsets. He didn't mention the iPhone 5 .

"Although the large build plan indicates Apple's confidence in the new product launches, we remain cautious as our checks indicate mostly incremental feature upgrades for the iPhone 5S," the report notes. "The Galaxy S4 continues to take share and the iPhone 5S will also have to compete with Google's Moto X phone."

So if you were hoping the iPhone 5S would look completely different than its predecessors, you better not hold your breath.

We should note that Misek's past predictions haven't always been completely accurate. The analyst previously forecasted that iPhone 5S production would begin in March for a June or July release. In addition, last year he incorrectly predicted that the launch of an Apple-branded television set was near.

His latest forecast does, however, follow reports that contract manufacturing giant Foxconn has been recruiting factory workers to build Apple's next iPhone. The Foxconn hiring push is being conducted "specifically for production of a new iPhone model," according to a recent DigiTimes report.

For now, we'll just have to wait and see what Apple has in store.

#RVAPride: Digital Empire Graphic Design | Gay Richmond News ...

I?m proud to support the community here because I see on a daily basis examples of the community supporting each other.

Read More: Christopher Murphy, Digital Empire Graphic Design, rvapride

#RVA Pride is what keeps us in Richmond. #RVAPride is what we love and do in the city. #RVAPride is businesses, people, place, and things that support the LGBT community here in Richmond. #RVAPride is a campaign to help bring LGBT people to Richmond. Get in on the fun, use #RVAPride on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, and help grow this city into the space we want it to be.

????????-

Christopher Murphy is the owner and graphic artist behind?Digital Empire Graphic Design. He?s the brains and hands behind a number of the graphics, visual presentations, and event posters you?ll see around town and online that help support the RVA LGBT community. Murphy spoke with GayRVA about why he has #RVAPride.

Murphy designed the logo for Richmond Remembers World Aids day

?

Why are you participating in this campaign?

I actually have a long history with the LGBT community here in Richmond. Both personally and professionally. I served on a couple of LGBT boards and I?ve done a lot of graphic design work for LGBT and LGBT friendly organizations and when I heard about this I was very excited to get involved.

If you were to bring an LGBT friend/family member to Richmond, why would you take them to your establishment?

I like to support LGBT businesses, so I would be happy to offer my services. That?s one reason I would take them to my establishment. And because of the history that I have with the community here. I?m very in touch with a lot of the businesses and the people here. As far as other places I would take them, I would take them to experience what I would call the best of gay Richmond:?Godfrey?s?Brunch,?dinner at NU Restaurant and Lounge, for example. Cary Town, I just love Cary Town so I would take them there for an afternoon. We have some really great performing arts venues here as well.

Some of the flyer work Murphy has done locally

Why are you proud to be a part of or support the LGBT community here in Richmond?

I?m proud to support the community here because I see on a daily basis examples of the community supporting each other. I want to continue to be a part of that. I see it with my friends, I see it with businesses working together. Pride over Richmond is a great example of that. I believe that you have to lead by example.

Africa: Bitcoin Fuels Africa's Banking Revolution

Bitcoin has landed in Kenya.

The online currency that was, until recently, the preserve of tech entrepreneurs and only the most pioneering financiers, is to go mainstream in Nairobi while the rest of us continue to look on gingerly from the sidelines.

This is thanks to Kipochi a Bitcoin wallet that will enable users to transfer bitcoins to each other before converting them into local currency.

Kipochi ? Swahili for ?wallet? ? will allow Kenyans to send money quickly and cheaply, effectively avoiding the high transaction fees charged by existing services such as moneygram. Enabling the transfer of funds between countries is significant given the huge importance of remittances to Africa?s economy. Remittances from outside Africa dwarf Western aid, for example, and the growth of economic migration across African borders means that transactions are increasingly international.

M-Pesa

Mobile phone banking is already flourishing in Africa much more quickly than here in the UK. It is driven by widespread mobile phone use and the relative scarcity of banks. The numbers are illuminating. In Kenya, the heartland of M-Pesa ? the world?s leading mobile money service, approximately 70% of adults do not have access to a formal bank account. At the same time around 70% do have access to a mobile phone, and the overwhelming majority of those with phones have used them to access M-Pesa to transfer money.

M-Pesa, M for mobile and Pesa ? Swahili for money ? is one of the relatively rare examples of ?technological catch-up?, where the rapid adoption of a new technology allows less developed parts of the world to make substantial strides forward.

M-Pesa is very straightforward. Once one has registered an account and deposited some money, one simply dispatches cash to the intended recipient via a text message. The recipient then converts the text message into cash at one of the 40,000 agents dotted around the country. The service is a godsend in many ways, it avoids lengthy bank queues, it negates the rigmarole of setting up a formal bank account and it facilities the support of the many rural-urban households that stretch across the country in an effort to secure a livelihood.

Leaping forward

Many parts of Africa have managed to effectively leapfrog the era of wired telecommunications by taking advantage of cheap, contract-free mobile phones to keep in touch. In turn, the massive demand for communication has driven private sector investment to ensure the growth of wireless networks across the continent.

It was therefore only a matter of time before a company woke up to the potential of a service like Kipochi. The advent of Bitcoin has provided the perfect vehicle for the next stage in the revolution.

What mobile phones have done in Africa is meet a need in a way that is affordable to the majority of the population in many African countries. And he growth in their use demonstrates the power of the African consumer to mobilise the private sector. Tellingly, by 2012, more than 30% of Kenya?s GDP was transacted through M-Pesa.

There are risks, however. Bitcoin has proved itself to be volatile, fuelled by speculators ? although this is not something that Africans are unaccustomed to. M-Pesa as a brand might be a trusted one, but the more abstract connection to Bitcoin might be a harder sell. Currently, Kipochi above all else represents possibility, as M-Pesa once did.

The growth of mobile money also represents something more profound. In Kenya, this emergent global economy isn?t about the internet, or mobile phones, or new technological platforms and opportunities. Ultimately its about customers.

The transformative power of technology for Africa is actually a story of the transformation of Africans from recipients to customers, and the emergence of Africa as a place of opportunity and entrepreneurship. Monetary innovation is a story of needs finally being met.

'Why You? Why Now?' A Med Student's Journal

I guess doctors, especially doctors-in-training, have to get used to sudden, inexplicable endings. You are trained to heal. That's the goal, that's the point. But every so often, you don't win. Something you didn't see coming, comes. I don't know which hurts more, the 'suddenly' or the 'why?" If the patient is clearly dying, it's easier. You can prepare. But if a patient is mending, then the questions Shara asks in this quiet poem she wrote on her blog at Scientific American, This May Hurt A Bit, can boomerang, "why you? why now?"

Shara Yurkiewiecz is a third year medical student in Boston. She writes about what it's like to be in training. She wants to do this doctoring thing well, but she doesn't always know how. She feels so much. The stakes are huge. Sometimes, as you'll see here, she is simply stunned.

Asymmetry

By Shara Yurkiewicz

We met on my birthday and
your age trailed mine by a week.
Your past medical history bare,
you let me see you sick.
You let me feel the margins
of your spleen,
your sexual history,
your confusion over why this
and why you
and what now
and what next.

I hated the political sticker on your phone
and your fever, untouched by medications
and the number of times I told you I didn't know.
"People think I'm weird, don't they?" you asked me.
Finally, an answer I knew
"Yeah."
Your immune system
or your travel history
or your damn bad luck.

I punctuated your sleep
as a broken alarm clock
not set by you,
plus or minus 7 am.

Questions through a fog of semi-consciousness,
penlight in pupils,
hammer on knees,
wandering stethoscope on chest and back.

You told me why you lay awake at night,
afraid of falling unconscious and
staying there.
I told you why I hated medicine,
to please not tell anyone and
you didn't.

"I don't mean to sound negative," you told me.
When?

Was it when you cried
when you learned to rewiggle your toes?
Was it when you laughed
when I helped you walk
with tiny steps
with wobbling gait
while looking down at feet that
couldn't quite feel the ground?
Was it when you promised
that you would rock climb again?

Was it on the last day I saw you?
Standing up
for the first time.
Clothes on over your gown
for the first time.
Your silhouette against the afternoon sun,
ready to walk out into it
on a healed body.
You did
for the first time.

Two sundowns go by and
I awaken at 6 am.
My unbroken alarm clock
urges me out of bed
to the hospital where you lie in bed
unawakening.
For the next hour
I brush my teeth,
dress,
walk,
hum,
while one mile away
they pound on your chest.

I arrive at the hospital as you leave.
Plus or minus 7 am.

Wherever you are now,
I remember where I left you.
Standing with the sun against your back.

Investigation under way into 787 Dreamliner fire

LONDON (AP) ? A British governmental body said Saturday it is leading an investigation into a fire aboard an empty Dreamliner aircraft at Heathrow Airport, an incident that has sparked renewed concern about Boeing's newest plane.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch, part of the Department of Transport, said the Ethiopian Airlines 787 plane was moved to a secure hangar at Heathrow early Saturday so that an investigative team can try to find out what caused Friday's fire.

The incident did not cause any injuries because no one was aboard the plane, but it forced runways at Heathrow, one of the world's busiest airports, to shut down for nearly an hour. Arrivals and departures were suspended, and hundreds of passengers' journeys were delayed.

The fire also added to investor fears about Boeing, which had to ground its fleet of 787s in January following problems with overheating lithium-ion batteries on two different planes. Boeing shares lost $5.01, or 4.7 percent, to fall to $101.87 on Friday.

The Chicago-based aviation giant said it is working with authorities to "fully understand and address" the problem. Others also involved in the investigation include the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and Ethiopian Airlines.

A spokesman at the Air Accidents Investigation Branch declined to provide a timeframe for the probe's completion, saying only it will last "as long as it takes."

Ethiopian Airlines, which was the first airline to resume using the 787 after the battery problem was fixed, said the aircraft in question had been parked at a remote stand at Heathrow for more than eight hours before smoke was detected.

Analysts have speculated that Friday's fire was not related to the plane's batteries because photos showed that the section of the plane damaged by the fire ? the rear roof ? was far away from the battery compartment.

Separately on Friday, another 787 flown by Thomson Airways had to return to Britain's Manchester Airport because of an unspecified mechanical issue.

There were few details about the severity of that incident. Thomson said the jet, bound for an airport in Sanford, Florida, near Orlando, had returned to Manchester "as a precautionary measure." All passengers disembarked safely.

US-India CEOs asked to focus on FDI, defence trade

A top US official on Friday asked Indian and US business leaders to focus on four key areas of FDI, defence trade, nuclear power and people as they work out ways to boost India-US business relationship.

"The full participation of the private sector is indispensible to a sustainable long-term partnership," Deputy Secretary of State William J Burns said welcoming participants to a meeting of the US-India CEO Forum at the State Department.

The meeting is led by India's Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia, US Deputy National Security Advisor Caroline Atkinson, and US Trade Representative Michael Froman, along with CEO co-chairs Ratan Tata and David Cote of Honeywell

US-India CEOs asked to focus on FDI, defence trade

Indian Finance Minister P Chidambaram and Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma, US Treasury Secretary Jacob J Lew, US Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker, and Under Secretary for Economics, Energy, and Agricultural Affairs Robert D. Hormats are also participating in addition to the American and Indian CEOs.

"That's why this Forum is so important," Burns said suggesting "a number of specific areas where I believe we can achieve near-term progress and deliver a solid return on the investment in our relationship."

"First, we ought to lower barriers for foreign direct investment," Burns said suggesting "reforms in FDI and concluding the bilateral investment treaty will be instrumental in taking innovation, economic growth, and job creation to a new level in both our countries".

"Second, we need to continue transforming our defense trade relationship. Third, we must deliver on the promise of the civil-nuclear agreement," he said as "this will be a visible manifestation of our strategic partnership."

"Finally, we must keep our countries open to the fundamental driver of this partnership - our people," he said noting "from Silicon Valley to Wall Street, and Cambridge to Washington, Indian Americans and Indian citizens are making a profound impact here".

Describing "the transformed relations between India and the United States as one of the most significant developments in global politics," he said: "We have worked too hard and come too far to lose that momentum now."

Launched in July 2005, the forum comprising 10 selected CEOs from both countries is mandated to develop a road map for increased partnership and cooperation between the two countries at a business level.

Watch: Mexico's Popocatepetl Volcano Spews Out Ash, Gas and Vapor

Mexico's Popocatepetl volcano still hasn't calmed down. The volcano keeps spewing ash, gas and vapor into its surroundings, and local authorities have no choice except remain on alert.

The footage above was posted online this July 11.

It was recorded by a Mexican navy pilot who flew his aircraft so close to the volcano that he managed to catch both Popocatepetl's crater and the seemingly endless stream of ash on camera.

People living close to the volcano say that, now that Popocatepetl is unusually active, ash has made it all the way to homes and office buildings.

Apparently, it was only last weekend when they woke up to find that their cars had been covered in volcanic dust.

The volcano's name translates as ?smoking mountain,? specialists say. Judging by the show that Popocatepetl has been putting on these past few weeks, there is no denying that the name suits it just right.

European Union raids three Internet providers

The EU's investigative commission conducted raids on three telecom groups on suspicion of anti-trust violations?

European Union officials on Thursday conducted raids on three telecommunications companies as part of ongoing anti-trust investigations.

The EU?s investigative branch, the European Commission, had concerns that the companies involved ? Germany's Deutsche Telekom, France's Orange SA, and Spanish firm Telefonica ??might have violated EU regulations that ?prohibit the abuse of a dominant market position.?

Though the EC did not name the telecom companies involved in the investigation. Deutsche Telekom and Orange SA both confirmed the raid in separate statements, and Reuters reported that Telefonica was also raided, citing a source familiar with the issue.

The three Internet companies act as conduits through which smaller content providers offer their services at the retail level.

?This service is crucial for the functioning of the Internet,? the EC?s statement reads.

The raids were conducted in response to complaints by local regulator Cogent Communications Group Inc., a Washington-based Internet provider whose customers transfer use services of Deutsche Telekom, Orange SA, and Telefonica, according to Bloomberg. Cogent alleges that the European telecom companies don?t provide enough bandwidth to meet demand.

As part of these investigations, data and emails at the company?s Headquarters in Bonn were also seized, according to a statement released by Deutsche Telekom on Thursday.

?Deutsche Telekom is surprised by the initiation of further investigations by the Commission...since previous allegations have all turned out to be unfounded,? the statement reads.

The EC carries out these kinds of inspections as a preliminary step into investigating suspected anticompetitive practices, though such inspections ?do not mean that the companies are guilty of anti-competitive behavior? nor do they ?prejudge the outcome of the investigation itself.?

The companies could face fines amounting to 10 percent of their annual global sales. Deutsche Telekom, which includes the US firm T-Mobile, generated $76 billion (58 ?) in revenue in 2012, according to the German news outlet, der Spiegel.

There is no deadline for inquiries into anti-competitive conduct in the European Union.?

China Wants To End Blackouts With Western Help -- And American Coal

English: Map of countries by GNI per capita co...

English: Map of countries by GNI per capita compared to China. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

When President Obama pronounced the steps that his administration would take to reduce carbon emissions, he spoke eloquently ? that U.S. citizens ?will have the satisfaction of knowing that the world we leave to our children will be better off for what we did.? The bigger test, though, is get to globe?s other polluters to join in the crusade, namely China.

China relies largely on coal to power its economy. But domestic and global environmental pressures are forcing it to look at other options that include nuclear energy and hydro-power. To get there, it needs a heck of a lot more foreign participation. By its own standards, China needs to attract $200 billion in private capital by 2030, and will require trillions overall in 20 years, says the International Energy Agency.

The United States and China, together, produce about 42 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions. In this country, totals are falling because of the coal-to-gas transition. But in China, they are rising, largely because it is building one coal generator a month. ??While critics decry China?s heavy coal use, its supporters are bullish: It?s an economy growing at 8 percent annually while its demand for energy is escalating even faster. Coal facilities, though, are doing most of the heavy lifting.

The irony is that China has entered its economic transformation at the same time the global community is dealing with climate change. China, too, is trying to cope,? with some leaders of its ruling party noting that growth there must be guarded until that nation gets the tools it needs to regulate emissions.

The good news is that the Asian country is making investments in advanced coal generation that include supercritical and ultra-supercritical plants. In those cases, for each unit of coal input into the system, more power comes out on the back end, reducing overall pollution levels. General Electric Corp., for example, is implementing coal gasification technology there.

While China mines at least 3 billion tons of coal a year, it must still import the fuel. To that end, American investors find Chinese companies irresistible and particularly coal companies. Alpha Natural Resources and Peabody Energy are satisfying China?s demand for more coal imports.

Critics of additional coal plant construction in China argue that multinational corporations must become more environmentally conscious. China?s blessings, they add, will be wiped out unless it curbs the rate of emissions.

The Chinese government, though, is moving to diversify its electricity portfolio: By 2020, China says that sustainable power will rise from about 10 percent today to provide 15 percent of its electricity. By 2050 green fuels will supply 30 percent.? China also hopes to increase its nuclear portfolio from 2.3 percent of its generation today to 6 percent ? 40,000 megawatts ? by 2020. By 2050, the aim is to have at least 150,000 megawatts of installed nuclear capacity, or 22 percent of the mix.

As such, Lockheed Martin announced it is developing a 10-megawatt ocean thermal energy conversion pilot power plant off the coast of southern China.? Meanwhile, China is also buying nuclear technology from Westinghouse, owned by Toshiba Corp.

Government reforms are easing restrictions to foreign investment in newer generation technologies and particularly those associated with renewable power and nuclear energy, albeit Chinese interests must generally hold dominant shares. Despite those moves toward privatization, China?s economy is controlled by inefficient government enterprises. That?s affected foreign direct investment, which in 2010 was 3.12 percent of all capital in the country, says the World Bank ? not enough to meet expected future energy demand.

China is walking a fine line as it tries to ease into a market-oriented power sector. If it moves too quickly, havoc may result. Deregulating too slowly, however, could hamper economic growth.

The goal is to fuel its economy and to end the blackouts and power shortages. Beyond an influx of new capital, analysts say that the immediate remedy is to get the grids interconnected so that those areas with surpluses can feed power to those regions that suffer shortages. At the same time, the government needs to tie electricity usage to market rates. In other words, manufacturers might be charged more during peak periods when electricity consumption can spike 100 percent.

China is trying to build a stable generation base comprised of nuclear, coal and green facilities. That, of course, takes money. To achieve that objective, policymakers know they must restructure their electricity sector to make it more attractive to outside investors that require adequate returns. The trick is to limit price volatility while at the same time let consumers there know that rates can and will fluctuate. If done right, China can help fuel its sizzling economy with foreign direct investment, while also leaving a better world for its children.
