UCLA FOOTBALL: Bruins don't find Kraft Hunger Bowl a laughing matter

SAN FRANCISCO - Cue the laugh track, folks.

So many jokes have been told since the announcement of the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl on Dec. 4 that Henny Youngman would be proud. College football writers became Catskills comedians while using UCLA and Illinois as punch lines.

Here are two teams that back-doored into the postseason, further proof the bowl system is a farce, two teams with interim head coaches who will not be retained, two teams that have elicited more guffaws than a season of "Saturday Night Live."

Just don't tell the players.

"We're both teams who've had up-and-down seasons, both coaches have been fired, we're both in the same spot," UCLA junior quarterback Kevin Prince said. "And in bowl games like this, it's the team who wants to win it the most that does. The team that wants to be here.

"We have to make sure that we're that team."

The teams may find themselves in similar circumstances, but their respective paths varied greatly.

UCLA's season was a rollercoaster, the peaks and valleys of a mountain range, the ride so nauseating fans turned purple in the face. Just when all appeared lost and a 48-12 loss to Arizona in Week 7 indicating a tailspin, the Bruins surprised everyone by winning two in a row over Cal and Arizona State and eventually headed to USC in Week 12 on a 3-1 streak.

What followed was nothing short of a disaster - a 50-0 loss to the Trojans that spelled the beginning of the

end of the Rick Neuheisel era, followed by a 49-31 loss to Oregon in the Pac-12 championship game, after which offensive coordinator Mike Johnson assumed the role of interim head coach.

In the beginning some players were questionable about being at school for another month, but now they are "all in," running back Johnathan Franklin said.

"You look at the last two games we played, 50-0, then losing to Oregon to go to the Rose Bowl, and we definitely need a win. Losing? Being 6-8? No," Franklin said.

Illinois, meanwhile, had one big rise and a similar fall.

The Illini started the season 6-0 behind a relentless defense that ranks seventh out of 120 FBS teams in total defense, fourth in pass defense, ninth in sacks and fifth in tackles for loss. To that point, Illinois' offense had been keeping up its end of the bargain while ranking 33rd nationally.

Then came a six-game slide against a brutal schedule that included losses to Ohio State, Wisconsin, Penn State and Michigan and, ultimately, the termination of Ron Zook a day after Neuheisel's firing and the subsequent promotion of defensive coordinator Vic Koenning as interim head coach.

"We have a clear mind of who we're playing and what we're going up against," UCLA junior cornerback Andrew Abbott said. "We know what their season was like. We respect them, but this game is more about us. It starts at home."

It starts at home and, more specifically, it starts up front.

UCLA (6-7, 4-3) picked a poor time to have its offensive line reeling from injury and suspension as Whitney Mercilus leads a ferocious front four into AT&T Park. UCLA junior offensive tackle Brett Downey, a former walk-on, will make his first start against the Illini defensive end who led the nation in sacks (14<MD+,%30,%55,%70>1/<MD-,%0,%55,%70>2) and forced fumbles (nine).

Downey will get a little help, though.

"It will be a test, and a lot of it will fall on my shoulders," Prince said. "I'll have to make sure we're in the right protection and that guys know where they're going. It's going to be on me that when we are throwing the ball, that I'm getting it out fast and that I know where I'm going with it."

So often this season, that has been Nelson Rosario.

The senior wide receiver perhaps has the most to gain among the Bruins, already over the 1,000-yard mark but with a chance to boost his NFL draft stock with an impressive showing.

And Prince is sure to go to him early and often because that's what you do when everything around you is tumbling down. You stick with what you know and who you know, and hope everyone rises to the occasion.

And you try to make everybody stop laughing.

"It's been weird; any time you have a coach who's fired, it's strange," Prince said. "The way we have practiced has been different. The way we're coached is different. Being able to adjust to that and get our focus on to this game has been tough, but I think we've done it.

"We're here, we're in San Francisco, and we have the feeling that the game is right here for us."

A Delta plane carrying about 36 passengers landed safely Wednesday afternoon. No injuries were reported.

Airport officials say the plane was headed from Detroit to Burlington, Vt., when the pilot reported an unexplained banging noise.

Earlier in the day a Chicago-bound United Airlines regional jet made an emergency landing at the two-runway Burlington International Airport shortly after takeoff after a report of smoke in the cargo hold. No injuries were reported among the 66 passengers and four crew members.

United spokesman Rahsaan Johnson says a cockpit indicator light erroneously alerted the flight crew to smoke in the cargo hold. He says passengers flew in a different plane to Chicago and landed safely.

Delta Air Lines Inc. hasn't commented.

Arsenal Hero: It Pains me, But With Bale Tottenham are London?s No.1

Arsenal legend Martin Keown believes Tottenham are now the finest team in London and that is largely down to the fact that Harry Redknapp retained Luka Modric and Gareth Bale in the summer.

Tottenham are currently five points clear of Arsenal and four ahead of Chelsea having played a game less than their London rivals, and the aforementioned Keown believes Redknapp's side are evidently winning the battle of the London juggernauts this season.

Where Arsenal lost Samir Nasri and captain Cesc Fabregas, Tottenham retained their two leading players in Bale and Modric despite apparent interest, and Keown believes that has made the difference between Arsene Wenger and Harry Redknapp's respective sides this season.

Keown believes Bale in particular has been instrumental in Tottenham's rise up the Premier League and is inevitably the envy of their rivals Arsenal and Chelsea, both of whom will be hoping Barcelona sign the White Hart Lane star in the not too distant future according to the former Gunners' stalwart.

Like us on Facebook

"While Spurs kept two players, Arsenal lost two." The former Highbury stalwart told the Daily Mail when discussing where the supremacy lies in London at the moment.

"That has made a significant difference to the teams (Tottenham and Arsenal).

"(Gareth) Bale is not an international globetrotter, which helps. He seems happy to play for Harry, when he could be in the Barcelona team now. One day he will be. Arsenal and Chelsea will be very happy when that day arrives. Bale plays like he has two engines. An incredible sight."

The Arsenal hero concluded: "With Bale, as much as it pains me to say it, they (Tottenham) will finish No 1 in London. Parker has been significant, too, but I still don't think Spurs will go higher than this current position."?

MetLife to sell retail deposits to GE Capital

(AP) ? MetLife said Tuesday it plans to sell its U.S. retail deposit business to GE Capital as it moves away from being a bank holding company.

Financial terms were not disclosed. MetLife Inc., which offers insurance and employee benefit programs, said in July that it was exploring the sale of its banking operations to focus on its other business.

GE Capital's banking business, GE Capital Financial, will acquire $7.5 billion in deposits. About $3 billion in other deposits are not part of the deal, but will be transferred out of MetLife Bank in the next six months. It has not yet been determined where the $3 billion will be transferred, said company spokesman John Calagna.

GE Capital says the deal fits its plans to launch a U.S. deposit platform.

MetLife Bank began operating in 2001, offering retail savings products via the Internet.

The deal is expected to close in the second quarter.

Banks are facing tighter regulation under the Dodd-Frank Act, which was passed last year. Named for former Sen. Christopher Dodd and outgoing Rep. Barney Frank, the new law was written to overhaul the financial system and curb practices that were blamed for the financial crisis.

Some companies such as MetLife have sought to end banking practices to avoid dealing with the tighter laws. Allstate Corp. has moved to shut down its banking operations by the first half of 2012.

GE Capital is a unit of General Electric Co.

MetLife shares rose 40 cents to $31.50 in afternoon trading. GE shares fell 14 cents to $18.09.

Oil hovers below $100 amid low holiday volume

SINGAPORE (AP) - Oil prices hovered below $100 a barrel Tuesday in Asia amid low holiday week trading volume.

Benchmark crude for February delivery was down 11 cents at $99.57 a barrel at early afternoon Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 15 cents to settle at $99.68 in New York on Friday.

In London, Brent crude was up 15 cents at $108.11 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

Global oil trading markets were closed Monday for the Christmas holiday.

Crude briefly popped above $100 on Friday amid growing evidence the U.S. economy is improving. Some analysts say concerns that Europe's debt crisis will trigger a recession on the continent next year will overshadow any positive news out of the U.S. this week.

"We don't expect this strength to be maintained this week given a likely shift in focus back toward the eurozone where major debt issues remain largely unresolved," energy consultant Ritterbusch and Associates said in a report.

Because many traders are on vacation this week, trading volume is sharply lower and a few trades could jolt prices.

"Volume will be thin through this abbreviated week," energy consultant and trader The Schork Group said in a report. "As such, the potential exists for some wild swings."

In other Nymex trading, heating oil rose 0.8 cents to $2.91 per gallon and gasoline futures were steady at $2.68 per gallon. Natural gas futures were down 2.9 cents to $3.09 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Japan urges China to help keep North Korea in check (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? Japan urged China on Monday to shoulder a big role in ensuring North Korea avoids volatility after the death of its leader, Kim Jong-il.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda also urged Chinese President Hu Jintao to share information about developments in North Korea, where the succession of Kim's youngest son, Kim Jong-un, has fanned speculation about who will really control the secretive one-party state and its nuclear program.

"It is important that we will not let the death of the chairman of the National Defense Commission Kim have a negative impact on the peace and stability of the Korean peninsula," Noda was quoted by a Japanese official as telling Hu while on a visit to in Beijing.

Kim Jong-il's many positions included head of the important military commission.

"Under these circumstance, the role of China, which is the chair country of the six-party talks and has a big influence on North Korea, is extremely important," said Noda, according to the official who briefed reporters but declined to be identified.

The so-called six-party talks involve the two Koreas, China, Japan, the United States and Russia and are aimed at getting North Korea to give up its efforts to develop nuclear weapons.

The Japanese prime minister is the first regional leader to visit China since Kim Jong-il's death was announced a week ago.

China is the North's only major ally and the North has long relied on China for diplomatic and economic support.

Chinese state news agency Xinhua said Hu told Noda that it was in the interests of all sides to maintain stability on the Korean peninsula.

"China is ready to make joint efforts with all relevant parties, including Japan, to maintain peace and stability on the Korean peninsula and to achieve lasting peace, security and order on the peninsula and (in) northeast Asia," Xinhua cited Hu as saying.

Noda urged China to be forthcoming about what it learned about the North's transition.

"I would like vigorous information sharing between Japan and China, and intend to address the situation calmly and properly," the Japanese official cited Noda as telling Hu on the second and final day of his visit.

North Korea has alarmed the region with two plutonium-based nuclear test blasts, a succession of military altercations, and declarations that it was developing uranium enrichment, which could open another path to assembling atomic weapons.

Constraining North Korea is especially important for Japan, which is within range of the North's missiles and wants it to resolve the issue of the fate of Japanese citizens kidnapped and taken to North Korea to help train spies decades ago.

But China is wary about upsetting North Korea, especially during a delicate transition, and has restricted its public comments about the implications of Kim's death to broad calls for stability and calm.

"Both sides agreed that preserving the peace and stability of the Korean peninsula serves the interests of all sides," the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in its account of talks on Sunday between Noda and Premier Wen Jiabao.

Frankincense, Christmas staple, 'doomed': Scientists

If fire, grazing and insect attack, the most likely causes of decline, remain unchecked, then?frankincense?production could be doomed altogether.

Trees that produce frankincense, a fragrant resin used in incense and perfumes and a central part of the Christmas story, are declining so fast that production could be halved over the next 15 years, scientists said on Wednesday.

In a study published in the British Ecological Society's Journal of Applied Ecology, ecologists from the Netherlands and Ethiopia looked at large-scale field studies and predicted that tree numbers could decline by 90 percent in the next 50 years.

If fire, grazing and insect attack, the most likely causes of decline, remain unchecked, then frankincense production could be doomed altogether, they warned.

Frankincense, best known in religious teachings as one of the gifts laid before the newborn Messiah, is obtained by tapping various species of Boswellia, a small, deciduous tree that grows across Africa from northern Nigeria to the highlands of Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Cutting the Boswellia's bark produces the frankincense resin, a white substance with a strong, sweet smell. The resin is burnt in churches, mosques and at ceremonies, as well as being used by the perfume industry and in herbal medicines.

Despite its economic importance, incense has been traded internationally for thousands of years, little is known about how tapping affects Boswellia populations.

Working in an isolated part of northwest Ethiopia near the source of the Blue Nile, a research team led by Frans Bongers of Wageningen University in the Netherlands studied 13 two-hectare plots, some where trees were tapped for frankincense and some where they were untapped.

Over two years, they monitored survival, growth and seed production of more than 6,000 Boswellia trees and used the data to build mathematical models to predict the fate of Boswellia populations in coming years. The forecasts suggest Boswellia populations are declining so dramatically that frankincense production could be halved in the next 15 years.

"Current management of Boswellia populations is clearly unsustainable," Bongers said in a statement. "Our models show that within 50 years, populations of Boswellia will be decimated, and the declining populations mean frankincense production is doomed."

The researchers found that all the Boswellia populations they studied are declining, not only those from tapped trees, a finding that suggests factors other than tapping are at the root of the problem.

Bongers said the main causes of the trees' decline are likely to be burning, grazing and attack by the long-horn beetle, which lays its eggs under the Boswellia's bark.

The scientists urged local authorities to introduce better management incentives to ensure farmers work harder to protect Boswellia trees. In the short-term this meant preventing fires and beetle attack, Bongers said, but in the longer-term, large areas should be set aside and protected for five to 10 years to allow Boswellia saplings to become established.

California atheists block out nativity scenes

posted at 10:30 am on December 24, 2011 by Jazz Shaw

I don?t like dredging up that whole ?war on Christmas? thing, but (with apologies in advance to Allahpundit) this story kind of gets under my skin. In Santa Monica, California, there is apparently one particular stretch of road alongside a park which has traditionally been set aside for Christmas displays. The nativity scenes on display have been popular with residents and tourists. But in order to be fair to everyone, the city used a lottery to allocate space to groups wishing to put up Creche displays and related scenes. Now, a group of atheists are accused of swamping the lottery and taking over the lots.

This year, however, atheists have taken over most of the two-block stretch, nearly shutting out and angering a group of churches who contend the atheists have organized against the Christians and gamed a city lottery process allocating the holiday exhibit space.

In response, a leader of the atheist group says he?s just looking for evenhanded treatment to present his beliefs in a public space ? and goes so far as to say that the city shouldn?t even be allowing any religious or even atheist expression in the park.

That?s why he and his group have put nothing on half of the park exhibit spaces that they?ve secured from the city this year.

The atheists are declaring the politically left-leaning seaside town of Santa Monica as their latest battleground in a national movement to assert their rights.

?I?m part of a growing movement in America of atheists standing up for their rights. It?s a very exciting time for us that we?re having more of an impact in our society,? said Damon Vix, the organizer of the atheist group.

Yes, you?re having a big ?impact? on the local society, alright. You?re getting everyone angry at you and ruining their holiday season to no apparent purpose. In the interview, Mr. Vix makes it clear that he has no interest in seeing other people?s views being represented ? he just doesn?t want the Christians to use it.

In the interest of fairness, I could see if competing groups wanted to use some of the lots for an alternative display. If somebody wants to put up a big menorah on one of the lots, I don?t think anyone is going to get too worked up over it. And for these atheists, if they had something in mind as an alternative message? even a Festivus pole and a wrestling mat for some feats of strength, I?d probably have to give them some support. But to lock off the land to leave it empty rather than allow a nativity scene? That?s not some fight for equality or freedom. That?s just being a Grinch.

Beethoven's Deafness May Have Influenced His Music: Study

Ludwig van Beethoven, the eponymous classical music composer, is famous for churning out compositions despite his deafness. And now new study in the British Medical Journal shows that his musical compositions actually seem to be influenced by his worsening deafness with age.

Beethoven's deafness is attributed to severe tinnitus, which is a sensation of ringing or noise in the ears, according to BBC News.

The researchers reported that Beethoven first wrote about his hearing problems in an 1801 letter, saying: "In the theatre I have to get very close to the orchestra to understand the performers, and that from a distance I do not hear the high notes of the instruments and the singers' voices."

Researchers reported in the journal article that the hearing in Beethoven's left ear was first affected, "and he reported (bilateral) tinnitus, high tone hearing loss associated with poor speech discrimination, and recruitment with loud noises." In 1818, Beethoven began communicating with people via writing in notebooks, and researchers reported that Beethoven may have been completely deaf by 1825.

As a result, the BMJ article shows that Beethoven's later work -- when his hearing problems had grown more severe -- used more lower-pitched notes versus high-pitched notes.

BBC News reported:

The report's author Edoardo Saccenti said: "These results suggest that, as deafness progressed, Beethoven tended to use middle and low frequency notes, which he could hear better when music was performed, seemingly seeking for an auditory feedback loop. "When he came to rely completely on his inner ear he was no longer compelled to produce music he could actually hear when performed and slowly returned to his inner musical world and earlier composing experiences."

While interesting, Dr. Thomas Balkany, director of the University of Miami Ear Institute, told HealthDay that the journal article is very speculative of Beethoven's work, as "there is no formal hearing testing presented to determine the degree or frequencies of hearing loss."

These days, tinnitus can be improved as long as it's treated, according to the Mayo Clinic. The hearing condition affects as many as one in five people.

When tinnitus is a result of an underlying condition, a person can receive treatment by either getting earwax removed, treating a vascular condition or changing medication, the Mayo Clinic reported. Otherwise, a white noise machine, hearing aid or masking device can help to make the sound less noticeable.

There are also some medications that can help relieve symptoms of tinnitus (though there is not yet a drug that can cure tinnitus), according to the Mayo Clinic.

Keith Ferrazzi: Serve and Grow... Together This Holiday

A number of holiday seasons ago we were sitting at a fancy resort attending a well-known holiday weekend event that I had proudly accepted an invitation to along with almost a thousand other individuals and their families. We were talking about the state of our world when my guest leaned over and asked: "Do you think next year we might actually go do something instead of just talking about it?"

The comment launched our annual tradition of traveling to a third world country to serve in orphanages for the holidays. We wanted to "do something good" and the choice has ended up being one of the most unexpected and powerful gifts we have given ourselves.

This year, a number of friends and their families are joining us to serve others, rejuvenate themselves, explore a new region of the world, and to connect much more deeply as a family through our service to and engagement with orphans living just outside of Antigua, Guatemala.

I did this particular trip a few years ago and was struck by the amazing beauty of it all. It was a spiritually grounding experience and an empowering way to start the New Year. I can't wait to see the experience through the eyes of our friends' children. The experience is transformative to anyone who has not experienced real poverty, but then also to witness such deep joy among those with nothing. Each year we grow more connected as a family and a couple.

These experiences prove to be transformational, a reflective and stark reminder of what's important. Our hope is that we all come back more grounded, more empathetic, authentic and generous, and that it stays with us. Being able to help others in such a real way has even accelerated my own leadership when I get back home. I know my team relationships have become more understanding and our collaborative success has grown.

We also welcome and include our friends and their families who do not go with us. In supporting last year's trip, which was to Cambodia, our friend Arianna donated 20 chickens to the kids we met during one of our days at an orphanage. Oh, and also a big pot of milk and cookies, which I suspect the kids may have appreciated more than the chickens.

If you care to join Arianna and others in supporting these kids this holiday season, I might suggest going to www.keithferrazzi.com/about/charity to read past blogs, maybe looking at additional pictures of various trips on Facebook, and talking with your own families about how you all might serve and grow together. What could be more in the spirit of the holidays than making a difference together?

Raiders stay alive with 16-13 OT win over Chiefs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) ? Carson Palmer knew that Darrius Heyward-Bey, perhaps the Oakland Raiders' fastest wide receiver, could beat the Kansas City Chiefs defense if he went deep down the field.

The Raiders just had to wait for the right moment.

It came on the first play of overtime.

Heyward-Bey beat safety Kendrick Lewis down the left side and Palmer hit him for a 53-yard gain, setting up Sebastian Janikowski's 36-yard field goal 2:13 into overtime Saturday for a 16-13 win that kept the Raiders' playoff hopes alive and eliminated Kansas City from contention.

"It was the right time to call it," Palmer said. "I wanted it earlier, but we saved it for the right time. The protection was flawless and the route was great."

It was just about the only thing that was flawless.

The Raiders committed 15 penalties for 92 yards, one of them ? a delay of game ? wiping out an audacious fake field goal that would have gone for a 36-yard touchdown pass. Palmer also threw a pair of interceptions and the Raiders converted only 3 of 11 third-down opportunities.

"An ugly win is better than a pretty loss," Palmer said.

Especially given the stakes.

Oakland (8-7) can win the AFC West by beating San Diego next week and getting some help from ? of all teams ? the Chiefs, who travel to Denver for a game that's become meaningless to them.

"The man told me, 'Hue, we'll win it in the end.' I believe that," said Raiders coach Hue Jackson, reflecting on a conversation he had with Al Davis before the Raiders owner died in October. "I don't know how it's going to happen. I don't care how it's going to happen."

Oakland led 13-6 late in the fourth quarter when Kyle Orton connected with Dexter McCluster for a 49-yard gain, setting up a short TD toss to Dwayne Bowe with 1:02 remaining in regulation.

The Raiders went three-and-out in short order, giving Kansas City the ball back with only enough time to get into field-goal range. Orton hit Bowe for 25 yards and Terrance Copper for 11 more to set up Ryan Succop, whose 49-yard try was blocked as time ran out.

It was the second field goal that Succop had blocked.

"We had an opportunity to win the game. Those guys came up big," Chiefs linebacker Tamba Hali said. "I mean, blocking two field goals ? what's the odds of blocking two field goals in a big game like this? More credit to those guys."

The Raiders, who blew a 13-point lead in the final five minutes to Detroit last week, have won five straight games at Kansas City. Perhaps none was important as this one, with all four teams in the division beginning the day with a chance of squeaking into the playoffs.

The Chiefs (6-9) struggled to take advantage of drives one week after piling up a season-best 438 yards of offense in a 19-14 victory over previously unbeaten Green Bay. That was their first game with Orton under center and interim coach Romeo Crennel calling the shots from the sideline.

Orton threw a pair of interceptions against Oakland, one of them in the end zone in the second quarter and the other as the Chiefs were driving in the fourth quarter.

"I commend everybody for fighting hard and giving us a chance at the end," Orton said.

The first half amounted to a cacophony of errors that ended in a 3-3 tie.

The Raiders, the most penalized team in the NFL and on pace to set a single-season record, were flagged 10 times for 57 yards, while the Chiefs were flagged eight times for 53 yards.

It wasn't just the quantity of penalties, either. It was the quality.

Javier Arenas had an interception of Palmer wiped out by defensive holding in the first quarter, a turnover that would have given Kansas City prime field position.

The Raiders returned the favor on their next possession. Facing fourth-and-2 at the Chiefs 36, they pulled off fake field goal in which punter Shane Lechler, the holder on the play, threw a shovel pass to tight end Brandon Myers, and he ran untouched around end for the touchdown.

It was called back by a delay of game penalty, and Janikowski's 58-yard try hit the crossbar.

Bowe dropped an easy touchdown catch on the Chiefs' ensuing possession, and Orton was picked off by Matt Giordano in the end zone. Palmer gave it right back when Arenas intercepted him.

The Chiefs promptly wasted another scoring opportunity with a staggering string of penalties: intentional grounding, a delay of game and a false start, all in succession. Succop ultimately had his long field attempt blocked by Richard Seymour, his first miss since Sept. 25 at Buffalo.

It wound up being all the more important by the end of regulation.

"Our guys fought and they hung in there, went into overtime, and it took some guts to do that," Crennel said. "We had a couple of field goals blocked, we got a couple balls thrown over our head, we turned the ball over a couple times. In the NFL, it's hard to win when you do those kinds of things."

Notes: The Raiders have been penalized 155 times for 1,293 yards this season. Kansas City has the NFL record with 158 for 1,304, set in 1998. ... Oakland played without RB Darren McFadden (mid-foot sprain) for the eighth straight game. Michael Bush ran 23 times for 70 yards in his place. ... Chiefs S Jon McGraw (ankle) did not play. ... Possible cure for leukemia found in fish oil

ScienceDaily (Dec. 22, 2011) ? A compound produced from fish oil that appears to target leukemia stem cells could lead to a cure for the disease, according to Penn State researchers.

The compound -- delta-12-protaglandin J3, or D12-PGJ3 -- targeted and killed the stem cells of chronic myelogenous leukemia, or CML, in mice, said Sandeep Prabhu, associate professor of immunology and molecular toxicology in the Department of Veterinary and Medical Sciences. The compound is produced from EPA -- Eicosapentaenoic Acid -- an Omega-3 fatty acid found in fish and in fish oil, he said.

"Research in the past on fatty acids has shown the health benefits of fatty acids on cardiovascular system and brain development, particularly in infants, but we have shown that some metabolites of Omega-3 have the ability to selectively kill the leukemia-causing stem cells in mice," said Prabhu. "The important thing is that the mice were completely cured of leukemia with no relapse."

The researchers, who released their findings in the current issue of Blood, said the compound kills cancer-causing stem cells in the mice's spleen and bone marrow. Specifically, it activates a gene -- p53 -- in the leukemia stem cell that programs the cell's own death.

"p53 is a tumor suppressor gene that regulates the response to DNA damage and maintains genomic stability," Prabhu said.

Killing the stem cells in leukemia, a cancer of the white blood cells, is important because stem cells can divide and produce more cancer cells, as well as create more stem cells, Prabhu said.

The current therapy for CML extends the patient's life by keeping the number of leukemia cells low, but the drugs fail to completely cure the disease because they do not target leukemia stem cells, said Robert Paulson, associate professor of veterinary and biomedical sciences, who co-directed this research with Prabhu.

"The patients must take the drugs continuously," said Paulson. "If they stop, the disease relapses because the leukemia stem cells are resistant to the drugs."

Current treatments are unable to kill the leukemia stem cells, Paulson said.

"These stem cells can hide from the treatment, and a small population of stem cells give rise to more leukemia cells," said Paulson. "So, targeting the stem cells is essential if you want to cure leukemia."

During the experiments, the researchers injected each mouse with about 600 nanograms of D12-PGJ3 each day for a week. Tests showed that the mice were completely cured of the disease. The blood count was normal, and the spleen returned to normal size. The disease did not relapse.

In previous experiments, the compound also killed the stem cells of Friend Virus-induced leukemia, an experimental model for human leukemia.

The researchers focused on D12-PGJ3 because it killed the leukemia stem cells, but had the least number of side effects. The researchers currently are working to determine whether the compound can be used to treat the terminal stage of CML, referred to as Blast Crisis. There are currently no drugs available that can treat the disease when it progresses to this stage.

The researchers, who applied for a patent, are also preparing to test the compound in human trials.

2.8 Million Jobless Americans to Lose Unemployment Insurance ...

?

by Adele Stan, Dec 22, 2011

When House Republicans left town for the holidays Wednesday, they didn?t even leave behind?a piece of coal in the stockings of some 2.8 million jobless workers whose unemployment benefits are about to expire over the course of the next two months. At least a piece of coal can be burned for heat.

An analysis by the National Employment Law Project (NELP) finds that come January, some 1.8 million will lose their unemployment insurance (UI), with another 1.1 million meeting the same fate in February.

NELP Executive Director Christine Owens explained in a statement:

Winter is upon us, a time when shelter, heat, and adequate nutrition are expensive and deeply important, and the most vulnerable among us are at even greater risk.

Further, Owens explained, the?House failure to extend UI?will be felt well beyond the ranks of the unemployed themselves:

The impact of a lapse of federal unemployment insurance will be devastating for the unemployed, their families, the communities in which they live and the local economies the benefits support.

As we reported, House GOP leaders scuttled a vote on a bill already passed by the Senate that would have extended federal unemployment benefits by an additional two months, and extended the payroll tax holiday for the same amount of time.

Owens concludes:

To rob the unemployed and their families of their essential lifeline just as the New Year begins, especially when a clear alternate path is available, is more than callous?it is unconscionable.

Deportation could split up lesbian Vt. couple (AP)

MONTPELIER, Vt. ? Frances Herbert and her wife, Takako Ueda, were looking forward to the New Year's Eve family concert at the Baptist Church, the town fireworks on the pond and then a night at home to celebrate the arrival of 2012.

But federal immigration authorities have told Ueda she needs to leave the United States for her native Japan by Dec. 31, a move that would split up a couple who have been together more than a decade and were married under Vermont law in April.

Their relatively rare case illuminates the difficulties that binational gay couples face at a time when the Obama administration has pledged not to uphold federal marriage law in courts but the rest of the executive branch ? including immigration authorities ? still follows the letter of the law.

Federal immigration authorities demand extensive documentation showing that a binational couple claiming to be married really are: witness statements, property records, utility and other household bills showing both names and the like often are required. Herbert said she and Ueda submitted 600 pages of such evidence with their application.

"It's despicable," Herbert said. "We had 600 pages of proof, and 599 of them were completely ignored. One line on one page" ? the one that said they were both women ? "is what they paid attention to."

Herbert, a 51-year-old home care provider, and Ueda, a 56-year-old graphic designer, live in the southern Vermont town of Dummerston and got letters Dec. 1 from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, a division of the Department of Homeland Security, telling them that Ueda had to leave the country within 30 days. Ueda's student visa expired in July.

They had applied for "relative alien" status on the basis that she was the spouse of a U.S. citizen, but the federal agency denied that petition.

The letter to Herbert, who had applied to be Ueda's sponsor, said that under the federal Defense of Marriage Act, the 1996 law saying the government would not recognize same-sex marriages, they couldn't be considered spouses. DOMA defines marriage as "only a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife."

"Your spouse is not a person of the opposite sex," wrote Robert Cowan, a U.S. CIS official. "Therefore, under the DOMA, your petition must be denied."

Only a handful of states recognize same-sex marriages. Experts say there are not reliable numbers on how many couples find themselves in a similar situation to that of Herbert and Ueda, but it's believed the number is small. Many binational same-sex couples don't seek spousal status for fear of being rejected because of DOMA.

Steve Ralls, spokesman for Immigration Equality, a nonprofit legal aid group that works on immigration and sexual orientation issues, said one San Francisco couple remained together despite getting government notices that one of the men, an Australian, needed to leave the country, while a New Jersey man's partner had been deported to Peru.

President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. announced in February that the administration would no longer defend DOMA in court in the cases in which it is being challenged. But until the issue is resolved, executive branch agencies, including those within the Department of Homeland Security, it remains the law of the land.

But Leslie Holmans, second vice president of the American Immigration Lawyers' Association, said that even after getting the types of letters Herbert and Ueda got, some same-sex, binational couples benefit from "prosecutorial discretion" by immigration authorities.

She said many federal prosecutors believe "our systems are so overcrowded that what we really need to be doing is concentrating on people who are a risk to our country. What's happened is that we have seen some same-sex couples go before the immigration court and ask for prosecutorial discretion." Government lawyers often respond by "either dismissing cases or they're not enforcing the notice of deportation."

Holmans said the situation is far from ideal because affected immigrants are left in "legal limbo," still without recognized immigration status and unable to get a job or seek other government benefits.

Scott Titshaw, a professor at Mercer University Law School in Georgia who has practiced immigration law and written articles on DOMA, said Ueda and Herbert most likely shouldn't fear Ueda's imminent arrest but "still have plenty to worry about." He said if Ueda traveled abroad, then she might be barred from re-entering the U.S. With local authorities in some states cracking down on illegal immigrants, Ueda might also want avoid travel to places like Arizona and Alabama, which both have strict immigration laws.

Herbert and Ueda first met as students at Aquinas College in Michigan in 1980 and stayed in touch during the next couple of decades after Ueda returned to Japan and married a man. She said that when Herbert went to visit her in Japan in 1999, she made a big decision. "I had a good marriage, but there was something missing, and that something was Frances." Eight months later, she moved to the United States, and the two had a commitment ceremony in 2000, marrying in 2011.

Both vowed to fight any effort to break them up.

"I'm a really great law obeyer. I grew up in Japan. We follow laws," Ueda said with a laugh. "But I have a very strong feeling, too, that I won't go back to Japan. I don't have a place to live in Japan. My family, my existence, is not there anymore."

Three shot at courthouse in northern Minnesota (Reuters)

MINNEAPOLIS (Reuters) ? Three people were shot on Thursday afternoon at a courthouse in a remote corner of northeastern Minnesota, and a suspect has been taken into custody, authorities said.

The shooting happened at the Cook County Courthouse in Grand Marais, Minnesota, the Cook County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

One person was treated and released from a local hospital in Grand Marais and two others were transported to Essentia Health Hospital in Duluth, Minnesota, the statement said.

The names of those shot were not released, nor was a description of their condition. A sheriff's dispatcher had said earlier that one of the three had serious injuries.

The suspect was not among the three who were shot, state public safety department spokesman Doug Neville said.

No other suspects were being sought, the sheriff's office said. A state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigator and a crime scene team have been sent to assist the sheriff's office in the investigation.

Grand Marais is located along the north shore of Lake Superior about 110 miles northeast of Duluth.

The courthouse will remain closed on Friday and reopen on Monday, Cook County said.

CPU Wars and c-Jump: the nerdiest card and board games ever

c-Jump
Board games and card games are kind of dorky to begin with. And there are plenty of titles out there that hold a special place in the heart of the nerd (just ask one about Settlers of Catan). But, there is a line, a line which even the nerdiest amongst us might not care to cross. For example, c-Jump -- a board game that teaches the basics of programming. Some of the spaces you'll land on in the course of your journey down the mountain include "goto jump;" and "switch (x) {". Then there's CPU Wars, for the three people out there that think Magic: The Gathering is too mainstream. In this card battle game you pit CPUs from throughout history against each other and attempt to collect all your adversary's processors. You can order c-Jump through ThinkGeek for $25 and pledge cash to CPU Wars over at Kickstarter. You'll find a video of the card game after the break.

(AP) ? After a Good Samaritan helped her pay off the layaway bill she'd accumulated to buy Christmas gifts for her grandchildren, Lori Stearnes planned to collect her paycheck Friday and head to Kmart anyway.

Her new plan: Pay the stranger's kindness forward by using the money she'd budgeted to instead support somebody else.

"It just gives you a warm feeling," said Stearnes, 53, of Omaha. "... With all the things going on the world, just to have someone do that is so, I don't know, it's hard to put into words."

At Kmart stores across the country, Santa seems to be getting some help: Anonymous donors are paying off strangers' layaway accounts, buying the Christmas gifts other families couldn't afford, especially toys and children's clothes set aside by impoverished parents.

Stearnes said at first she thought it was a joke when someone from the Omaha store called to say someone had paid off most of her layaway bill for toys and outfits she bought for the youngest four of her seven grandchildren.

The total bill was about $250, but after the stranger helped, she only had a $58 balance, she said. Stearns, who cleans medical instruments at a hospital, said she and her husband, Lloyd, live paycheck to paycheck and that layaway often helps spread out the costs of Christmas.

A similar random act of kindness happened at a Kmart in Indianapolis, where a young father wearing dirty clothes and worn-out boots, stood in line at a layaway counter alongside three small children.

He asked to pay something on his bill because he knew he wouldn't be able to afford it all before Christmas. Then a mysterious woman stepped up to the counter.

"She told him, 'No, I'm paying for it,'" recalled Edna Deppe, assistant manager at the store in Indianapolis. "He just stood there and looked at her and then looked at me and asked if it was a joke. I told him it wasn't, and that she was going to pay for him. And he just busted out in tears."

Before she left the store Tuesday evening, the Indianapolis woman in her mid-40s had paid the layaway orders for as many as 50 people. On the way out, she handed out $50 bills and paid for two carts of toys for a woman in line at the cash register.

"She was doing it in the memory of her husband who had just died, and she said she wasn't going to be able to spend it and wanted to make people happy with it," Deppe said. The woman did not identify herself and only asked people to "remember Ben," an apparent reference to her husband.

Deppe, who said she has worked in retail for 40 years, had never seen anything like it.

"It was like an angel fell out of the sky and appeared in our store," she said.

Most of the donors have done their giving secretly.

Dona Bremser, an Omaha nurse, was at work when a Kmart employee called to tell her that someone had paid off the $70 balance of her layaway account, which held nearly $200 in toys for her 4-year-old son.

"I was speechless," Bremser said. "It made me believe in Christmas again."

Dozens of other customers have received similar calls in Nebraska, Michigan, Iowa, Indiana and Montana.

The benefactors generally ask to help families who are squirreling away items for young children. They often pay a portion of the balance, usually all but a few dollars or cents so the layaway order stays in the store's system.

The phenomenon seems to have begun in Michigan before spreading, Kmart executives said.

"It is honestly being driven by people wanting to do a good deed at this time of the year," said Salima Yala, Kmart's division vice president for layaway.

The good Samaritans seem to be visiting mainly Kmart stores, though a Wal-Mart spokesman said a few of his stores in Joplin, Mo., and Chicago have also seen some layaway accounts paid off.

Kmart representatives say they did nothing to instigate the secret Santas or spread word of the generosity. But it's happening as the company struggles to compete with chains such as Wal-Mart and Target.

Kmart may be the focus of layaway generosity, Yala said, because it is one of the few large discount stores that has offered layaway year-round for about four decades. Under the program, customers can make purchases but let the store hold onto their merchandise as they pay it off slowly over several weeks.

Karl Graff, assistant manager of the Omaha store, said at least one good Samaritan paid off the accounts of five people. One woman broke into tears when he called to tell her about the help.

"She wasn't sure she was going to be able to pay off their layaway and was afraid their kids weren't going to have anything for Christmas," Graff said. "You know, 50 bucks may not sound like a lot, but I tell you what, at the right time, it may as well be a million dollars for some people."

In Missoula, Mont., a man spent more than $1,200 to pay down the balances of six customers whose layaway orders were about to be returned to a Kmart store's inventory because of late payments.

Store employees reached one beneficiary on her cellphone at Seattle Children's Hospital, where her son was being treated for an undisclosed illness.

"She was yelling at the nurses, 'We're going to have Christmas after all!'" store manager Josine Murrin said.

A Kmart in Plainfield Township, Mich., called Roberta Carter last week to let her know a man had paid all but 40 cents of her $60 layaway.

Carter, a mother of eight from Grand Rapids, Mich., said she cried upon hearing the news. She and her family have been struggling as she seeks a full-time job.

"My kids will have clothes for Christmas," she said.

Angie Torres, a stay-at-home mother of four children under the age of 8, was in the Indianapolis Kmart on Tuesday to make a payment on her layaway bill when she learned the woman next to her was paying off her account.

"I started to cry. I couldn't believe it," said Torres, who doubted she would have been able to pay off the balance. "I was in disbelief. I hugged her and gave her a kiss."

World Golf Hall of Fame to induct Dan Jenkins in 2012

Jenkins is also in the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame.

Dec. 14, 2011

FORT WORTH, Texas -- The World Golf Hall of Fame & Museum will enshrine award-winning journalist Dan Jenkins as part of its Class of 2012. The 82-year-old writer was selected through the Lifetime Achievement Category.

Jenkins will be inducted along with Phil Mickelson and Hollis Stacy into the Hall of Fame at its Induction Ceremony on May 7, 2012 at World Golf Village in St. Augustine, Fla. The Ceremony is held on the Monday of THE PLAYERS Championship week.

PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem and World Golf Hall of Fame Chief Operating Officer Jack Peter made the announcement by teleconference, with Jenkins joining from his long-time home in Fort Worth, Texas.

"Dan has been a vital part of the game for more than 60 years," Finchem said. "His unique brand of storytelling in newspapers, books, Sports Illustrated and Golf Digest helped introduce golf to millions of fans. His contributions to sports journalism, especially golf, make him worthy of this honor."

Jenkins is regarded as one of America's greatest sportswriters. His chronicles of Texas golf in the 1950s, specifically of Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson, are legendary. When Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer were starring in the 1960s and 70s, Jenkins was at Sports Illustrated, reporting on their exploits with award-winning stories. Jenkins, the author of several best-selling sports books, still maintains a regular column for Golf Digest.

Jenkins won the 1995 PGA Lifetime Achievement in Journalism Award from the PGA of America and was inducted into the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame in 1996. He won his first award in the Golf Writers Association of America's annual writing contest in 1957 while working for the Fort Worth Press newspaper. In 2011, he earned his ninth career award. It was the first time he was honored in the Internet category.

"I can only say as a native of Fort Worth, Texas, that I'm extremely proud to keep following Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson somewhere," Jenkins said. "Not with my golf game, but with my typewriter."

The Hall of Fame will round out the Class of 2012 with a final announcement on Thursday, Dec. 15.

"Dan is a legend," Peter said. "He has been telling some of golf's greatest stories for generations and we are honored to be able to tell his story at the World Golf Hall of Fame. He is a fantastic addition to the Class of 2012."

Atlanta police say the rapper Slim Dunkin was gunned down Friday evening in a city music studio as he prepared to record a video.

Police Maj. Keith Meadows said the performer, whose real name is Mario Hamilton, was fatally shot in the chest after getting into an argument with another individual.

"It appears the victim was scheduled to do a photo shoot," Meadows told The Associated Press. "Before the video shoot took place, it appears the victim and suspect got involved in a verbal altercation. We don't know what that altercation was about."

"The suspect produced a weapon, discharged that handgun one time, striking the victim in the chest," Meadows said.

The performer was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Meadows said police have not been able to identify the shooter. He said 13 to 20 people were in the small office-type building in southeast Atlanta at the time of the shooting, which took place around 5:30 p.m., but they were in different places.

"We've questioned a number of witnesses inside the recording studio at this time." Meadows said.

Police have not recovered the handgun that was used. Investigators remained at the scene late Friday evening.

"Right now we're just trying to....identify who may have seen what, really just trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together," Meadows said. "It seems everybody witnessed something very different. We're just trying to go back and make sense of everything."

Meadows said the victim was in his early 20s and resided in the Atlanta area.

Many fans were posting messages late Friday night on the rapper's Facebook page.

Mtv.com reported that Slim Dunkin had appeared on a number of songs with the performer Waka Flocka. The website reported that the Brick Squad Monopoly rapper was on a solo track and had recently released a 20-track mix tape that featured Gucci Mane. Roscoe Dash and Pastor Troy.
