Leslie Sisman: Popcorn Preview: To Rome With Love

Film: To Rome With Love (2012)
Cast includes: Alison Pill (Midnight in Paris), Judy Davis (Page Eight), Alec Baldwin (30 Rock), Woody Allen (Annie Hall), Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network), Greta Gerwig (Greenberg), Pen?lope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barcelona), Ellen Page (Juno)
Writer/Director: Woody Allen (Midnight in Paris)
Genre: Comedy (102 minutes) Partially in Italian with subtitles

The policeman at the center of a chaotic Roman traffic circle tells us it's his job to "see that the traffic moves." He goes on to say, "I see everything." For example, there's Hayley, in Europe for the summer. When she asks Michelangelo for directions, it seems easier just to walk with her. Hayley and Michelangelo fall in love at the Trevi Fountain. Antonio and Milly are newlyweds. Antonio's uncle has arranged a meeting with important friends -- if things work out, the couple could be moving to Rome. But Milly's afraid her schoolteacher hairstyle will make them look like country bumpkins. She needs a quick makeover. John's a well-known architect who lived in Rome for a year after college. He'll skip the tourist sights, he'd prefer a trip down memory lane. And last we meet Leopoldo... a dependable, predictable, boring family man, who's never late for work.

We meet Hayley's parents on the plane, coming to Rome. It's more than just turbulence that's got her dad worked up. "If she's going to marry an Italian, couldn't she find someone with material possessions? What's wrong with Euro-trash?" Meanwhile, Milly isn't having an easy time finding a hair salon. At this rate, she'll be lost all day. Another meanwhile -- John's old neighborhood is starting to look familiar. That's when Jack comes along. They have a lot in common, so Jack invites John home for coffee and to meet Sally. That's when we find out that Monica's on her way, she's Sally's cute, sexy friend, the one that men "just adore." Yet another meanwhile, life is taking an unexpected turn for boring, predictable Leopoldo. The media has decided to make him famous... why? Do they need a reason? It's reality TV!

From here, the plots thicken. A high-priced prostitute mistakenly ends up in Antonio's room. Jerry, father of Hayley, who's engaged to Michelangelo, laments his unrealized potential. (The critics never appreciated his "Rigoletto," with everyone dressed like white mice.) When Jerry hears Michelangelo's father singing in the shower, it rekindles youthful ambitions. To Rome With Love is a silly, clever love letter to Rome in classic Woody Allen style. Although we're following four different wacky stories, Woody keeps us engaged with unexpected plot twists and clever dialogue. The cleverest lines seem to be in Woody's scenes, but there are a lot of chuckles throughout. Woody fans will enjoy this one. Moviegoers who prefer logical plot development will find lots here to take issue with. But Woody fans have long ago figured out not to worry about a few lapses in logic. Woody proves once again he hasn't lost his amazing comic IQ... figure it in euro, "In dollars it's much less!"

London Bound Olympian Looks Back on Extraordinary Soccer Career

By Will Jones
NJ Today

Christie Rampone greets her young fans at a pep rally for the national team captain at Jersey Shore University Medical Center this week. Photo courtesy of Robert Ward/Asbury Park Press.

U.S. women?s soccer captain, Christie Rampone, is preparing to make her final bow at this summer?s Olympic Games in London. In a career spanning three previous Olympiads, the Manasquan native reflects upon a competition which has always carried a special resonance.

?Growing up in America, the Olympic Dream is what you look up to ? you always aspire to be on top of that podium,? she said. ?As you enter the Olympic village, you really feel the power and embrace that whole Olympic experience.?

Those podium aspirations were fulfilled in Beijing four summers ago, when the U.S. team defeated tournament favorite Brazil in the final. Rampone points to that gold medal as the defining moment in her Olympic career.

?That feeling when you win and no one was expecting it and the way in which the team persevered made it all the more rewarding and special.?

The Beijing Olympics offered Rampone her first experience of captaincy on an international level. And despite the disappointment of losing to Japan in the 2011 World Cup final, the U.S. team has prospered under her leadership as it continues to maintain its position at the top of FIFA?s world rankings. Rampone now travels to London as not only the captain of her nation?s soccer team, but as a veteran and role model within the U.S. Olympics team as a whole.

?I definitely embrace the leadership responsibilities,? she said. ?It?s helped me grow as a player and has given me more confidence on the field. Being in that role for the national team is an honor and I?ve really enjoyed it.?

As the New Jersey native prepares for London, she looks back on an international career that has spanned fifteen years and was launched during her time as a senior at Monmouth University when talent scouts faxed the school to invite her to attend a national team training camp. And according to Rampone, her success on the world stage can be greatly credited to her time growing up in the Garden State.

?You grow up with thick skin as a Jersey girl. It?s highly competitive. From a young age people are honest with you and they let you know how you?re playing. I don?t feel as if anything is truly sugar coated in Jersey so it allows you to become a better player.?

Rampone?s international achievements have been recognized by the academic institution she once flourished at as an athlete. Monmouth University inducted her into its Hall of Fame in 2007 and honored her achievements in Beijing by declaring October 5, 2008 as ?Christie Rampone Day.?

?It?s great to be recognized as it?s where I come from and it?s where the foundations were built for me to become an elite athlete,? she said. ?Being the shy girl, they really helped me get out of my shell. So for them to continue to support me definitely means a lot as they?re the reason I am where I am today.?

New Jersey will be watching with pride when Rampone?s Olympic campaign commences on July 25. The U.S. team takes on France in its opening group game, before playing Colombia and North Korea. The tournament marks the captain?s fourth Olympic Games, a feat never achieved by any other U.S. player.

Davis first to Hornets, then what in NBA draft?

(AP) ? Once Anthony Davis slips on a Hornets hat above basketball's most celebrated eyebrow Thursday night, the NBA draft really starts.

Davis will head to New Orleans with the No. 1 pick, even if the college player of the year is reluctant to guarantee it.

After that, nobody can be sure what will happen.

"I don't know," said Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, a fellow freshman from national champion Kentucky. "I have no clue."

Well, here's how the first round might go at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

___

1. NEW ORLEANS (21-45)

ANTHONY DAVIS, F, KENTUCKY

Davis said he hasn't been told he's the Hornets' guy, but he shouldn't need to ask. Teams don't pass up his mixture of size, skill and defensive dominance.

2. CHARLOTTE (7-59)

THOMAS ROBINSON, F, KANSAS.

Michael Jordan has botched a No. 1 pick (Kwame Brown) and a No. 3 (Adam Morrison) and now his Bobcats are at No. 2 after slipping in the lottery following the worst season in NBA history. Charlotte needs some toughness, and Robinson can provide it.

3. WASHINGTON (20-46)

MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST, F, KENTUCKY

John Wall and Kidd-Gilchrist would look great in Kentucky, and fans in Washington should like the idea of that combination, too.

4. CLEVELAND (21-45)

BRADLEY BEAL, G, FLORIDA

The Cavaliers rebounded as well as they could from losing LeBron James by taking eventual Rookie of the Year Kyrie Irving last year with the No. 1 pick. Next up is trying to find him the kind of help they could never provide for James.

5. SACRAMENTO (22-44).

HARRISON BARNES, G, NORTH CAROLINA.

Another top-five pick, another chance to add another good, young piece to follow Tyreke Evans and DeMarcus Cousins.

6. PORTLAND (28-38, from Brooklyn)

DAMIAN LILLARD, G, WEBER STATE

First of two lottery picks for the Trail Blazers. Plenty of buzz that they'll take Lillard, but given their injury woes, they should be happy if whoever they take just stays healthy.

7. GOLDEN STATE (23-43)

ANDRE DRUMMOND, F/C, CONNECTICUT

Even if Drummond falls over questions about everything from his offensive skills to his desire, it's hard to imagine his athleticism and defensive prowess let him go any lower than here.

8. TORONTO (23-43)

DION WAITERS, G, SYRACUSE

With Jose Calderon battling injuries in recent years and headed for a long summer with Spain's national team, it seems time to look for another point guard.

9. DETROIT (25-41)

JEREMY LAMB, F, CONNECTICUT

The Pistons won a title in 2004 with Richard Hamilton, and now they could grab another swingman from Connecticut with a similar game.

10. NEW ORLEANS (21-45, from Minnesota via Clippers).

AUSTIN RIVERS, G, DUKE

Because this pick came in the deal that sent Chris Paul out, how about bringing another point guard in?

11. PORTLAND (28-38)

TYLER ZELLER, C, NORTH CAROLINA

After addressing a backcourt need with their first pick, the Trail Blazers can go big with this one.

12. HOUSTON (34-32, from Milwaukee)

KENDALL MARSHALL, G, NORTH CAROLINA

If the Rockets keep all of them, this starts a run of three picks in the next seven selections. That wouldn't be the preferred plan, as the Rockets hope to package the picks in a deal to land an elite player.

13. PHOENIX (33-33)

JOHN HENSON, F/C, NORTH CAROLINA

The Suns have forever been looking for someone who can provide some interior defense. By picking yet another North Carolina player, they can find the two-time ACC Defensive Player of the Year.

14. MILWAUKEE (31-35, from Houston)

MEYERS LEONARD, C, ILLINOIS

After trading former No. 1 pick Andrew Bogut last season, the Bucks could use another big body to replace him.

15. PHILADELPHIA (35-31)

TERRENCE JONES, F, KENTUCKY

The 76ers are building a nice, deep team, and a versatile player like Jones would fit in nicely.

16. HOUSTON (34-32, from New York)

PERRY JONES, F, BAYLOR

If the Rockets kept multiple picks, they could afford to take some risks. Jones has the talent to be gone before here if he'd ever figured out how to use it.

17. DALLAS (36-30)

TERRENCE ROSS, G, WASHINGTON

The Mavericks are much more interested in free agency, hoping to bring home Deron Williams to Dallas or land another big piece. In the meantime, getting younger sure would help, too.

18. HOUSTON (34-32, from Minnesota)

JARED SULLINGER, C, OHIO STATE

One more risk for the Rockets, if they're still at this spot, by taking a chance on the draft's biggest health concern. If Sullinger's back holds up, he'd be a steal here.

19. ORLANDO (37-29)

FAB MELO, C, SYRACUSE

Even if the Magic don't decide it's time to trade Dwight Howard, it would still be worth having another big man around while their All-Star center recovers from back surgery.

20. DENVER (38-28)

WILL BARTON, G, MEMPHIS

The Nuggets are so deep that's hard to tell exactly what they need. A player who fits multiple spots always works in that situation.

21. BOSTON (39-27)

ROYCE WHITE, F, IOWA STATE

While they await difficult decisions on Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, the Celtics get back-to-back picks blend in some youth if their aging core sticks around.

22. BOSTON (39-27, from Clippers via Oklahoma City)

ARNETT MOULTRIE, F/C, MISSISSIPPI STATE

With no other options, the Celtics eventually moved Garnett to center last season. They may prefer to return to a conventional style whether he sticks around or not.

23. ATLANTA (40-26)

MOE HARKLESS, F, ST. JOHN'S

Josh Smith's name always seems to be linked to trade speculation, and if they do ever move him, the Hawks would want to have another athletic forward in place.

24. CLEVELAND (21-45, from Lakers)

ANDREW NICHOLSON, C, ST. BONAVENTURE

Small with their first pick, the Cavs look to the interior now.

25. MEMPHIS (41-25)

TONY WROTEN, G, WASHINGTON

After falling short against Chris Paul in the playoffs, the Grizzlies might want to look at adding another point guard for any future matchups.

26. INDIANA (42-24)

DRAYMOND GREEN, F, MICHIGAN STATE

Larry Bird, Donnie Walsh and Kevin Pritchard deciding on a pick? Whatever the Pacers do, there will certainly be some good thought being put into it.

27. MIAMI (46-20)

FESTUS EZELI, C, VANDERBILT

The Heat threw out the center position and went with Chris Bosh in the middle during their championship run. The search continues for a true man in the middle.

28. OKLAHOMA CITY (47-19)

DORON LAMB, G, KENTUCKY

Way easier said than done, but the Thunder needed a perimeter defender to cover LeBron James in the NBA Finals and keep Kevin Durant out of foul trouble. Better keep looking, because a finals rematch wouldn't surprise anyone.

29. CHICAGO (50-16)

MARQUIS TEAGUE, G, KENTUCKY

With Derrick Rose likely out all next season after tearing up his knee, point guard is the need for the Bulls.

30. GOLDEN STATE (23-43, from San Antonio).

EVAN FOURNIER, G/F, FRANCE

The Spurs have always been good at finding a quality international player around this spot, so perhaps the Warriors can do the same with San Antonio's pick.

Will The Student Loans Bubble Pop? | Wall Street Oasis

A WSO user not too long ago wrote a personal, almost poetic piece about his own experience with student debt titled, I Am The Toxic Debt. I can't help but think about the imminent dangers of unscrupulous student loans lending, as many institutions are still being chastised for easy lending which created the housing crash. Is our institutions doing the same thing, lending to students in a lack-luster economy? From Q4 2007 to Q1 2012, student loans have grown from $93 to $452.6 billion, a growth of 332%.

Student loans may be a liability on the consumer balance sheet, but they constitute an asset for Uncle Sam. Just how big? Nearly 35% of the total federal assets, over four times the 8.6% percent for the total mortgages outstanding.

This doesn't include private loans. Estimated total outstanding loans are estimated to be about one trillion dollars. But I get it, human capital and innovation is the driving force of economic growth. In a piece by Bloomberg:

Keep in mind that much of that $1 trillion is ?good debt.? Most borrowers have manageable loans, and workers with a bachelor?s degree earn 84 percent more over their lifetimes on average than those with only a high school diploma. They also face much lower unemployment rates. So a college loan remains a very smart investment for many people.

Do you think student loans could be the next bubble? Is congress doing enough to contain the problem? Or do you think the level of debt will prove to be a worthy investment into the US economy?

Emma Stone Attracted To Gwen Stacy's 'Spider-Man' Tragedy

'That is so shocking and horrifying and kind of beautiful in some way,' actress tells MTV News of her character's tragic end in the comics.
By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield in "The Amazing Spider-Man"
Photo:

The news of Emma Stone's casting in "The Amazing Spider-Man" was first met with almost universal approval. She would be the perfect Mary Jane Watson, fans thought. But when her true role as Gwen Stacy became clear, there was almost a bittersweet understanding.

If Gwen is remembered for one thing, it is her death at the hands of the Green Goblin.

When MTV News' Josh Horowitz spoke with the actress, she told him that the tragic end for the character was what initially drew her into the project. "That was part of the reason why I was kind of drawn to the role, that mark on pop-culture history," she said. "I read all about Gwen, and I thought that was so amazing."

Even with Gwen's death as an iconic moment in comic book history, canon is constantly rewritten for film adaptations. Stone sought answers from the filmmakers as to whether the film version of Gwen would respect the book, and she was pleased with the response.

"I spoke to the people behind the movie, and they said, 'Yeah, we're planning on staying true to the comics.' And I was like, 'If you're making a movie like this, that's something I want to be a part of,' " Stone said. "That is so shocking and horrifying and kind of beautiful in some way. The fact that people unsubscribed and burned their copies — I like anything that causes some kind of upheaval."

Her director Marc Webb couldn't say whether Stone's version of Gwen would meet the same fate in an upcoming installment, but he couldn't deny the allure of working with that moment. "I think that remains to be seen, but let me tell you this: The ultimate tragedy of Gwen Stacy is a really provocative and powerful part of the Spider-Man canon," he said. "I think it would be really extraordinary to explore that, but I don't want to take the wind out of the drama."

Check out everything we've got on "The Amazing Spider-Man."

Judge Koh stops US sales of Galaxy Tab 10.1, puts a smack down on Samsung (updated)

Judge Koh stops US sales of Galaxy Tab 101, puts a smack down on Samsung updated Judge Koh enjoins sales of Galaxy Tab 101, puts a smack down on Samsung

Thought Samsung was out of the woods when it defeated Apple's attempt to prevent it from selling the Galaxy Tab 10.1 stateside? Well, Apple appealed that decision and was given a second crack at banning Sammy's slate last month -- and it looks like Cupertino made the most of the opportunity, as Reuters reports that Judge Koh has granted Cupertino's request to enjoin the sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Details are scarce at the moment, but we do know it's only a preliminary injunction, meaning if Samsung's ultimately victorious in the case, the injunction will lift and it'll be free to peddle its wares once again. Still, it's certainly bad news for the Korean company, but given its expansive stable of other slates still on sale combined with its recent economic performance, we're sure Samsung can weather the storm while the courtroom fireworks continue.

Update 1: All Things D got a copy of Koh's order, and we just gave it a quick read. Turns out that she granted the injunction due to the strength of the merits of Apple's case and the unlikelihood that Samsung would invalidate Apple's design patent -- the court already held that the 10.1 is "virtually indistinguishable" from the iPad's design and likely infringes Apple's IP. Furthermore, Judge Koh held that, because Apple and Samsung are direct competitors in the tablet space and "design mattered more to customers in making tablet purchases," Apple would be irreparably harmed by further 10.1 sales. Those two factors outweighed any hardship suffered by Samsung, and thus, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 was stricken from US shelves.

Update 2: Well, that didn't take long -- a mere five hours after Judge Koh's order, Samsung filed an appeal, according to Foss Patents.

Egypt president-elect starts consultations on team

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's new president-elect, Islamist Mohammed Morsi, moved into the office once occupied by ousted leader Hosni Mubarak and started consultations Monday on forming his team and a new government, an aide said.

Morsi was declared on Sunday the winner of Egypt's first free presidential election in its modern history, following a tight race with Mubarak's last Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq.

The campaign had deeply polarized the country, pitting a former regime official and former military man? feared to be a continuation of Mubarak's autocratic rule but viewed by some as an agent of stability? against an Islamist.

Many supported Morsi as a representative of the uprising that toppled the old regime and a chance to challenge the military. But Morsi was equally feared among youth groups behind the uprising, which campaigned for a secular democratic state, and among many of the country's Christian minority. Almost half of the voters boycotted the runoff vote last weekend.

The victory of Morsi, the first civilian president to take over the country's top job, is a stunning achievement for the Islamist group that remained for most of its eight decades a shadowy organization targeted by successive regimes. He pledged he will be a "president for all Egyptians."

Now, Morsi faces a daunting struggle for power with the country's still-dominant military rulers who took over after Mubarak's ouster in the uprising.

Just days before a winner was announced, the ruling generals made a series of decisions that gave them sweeping powers, undercutting the authorities of the president, including passing the state budget __ and granted military police broad powers to detain civilians.

The generals, who promised to transfer power to an elected leader by July 1, say the moves were designed to fill a power vacuum and to ensure that no one person monopolizes decision-making until a new constitution is drafted.

Two days before the runoff, a decision by a top Egyptian court packed with former regime appointees also dissolved the country's first freely elected parliament, dominated by Islamists, including Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood. This left the military council also in charge of legislating duties.

With the parliament dissolved, it is not clear where Morsi will be sworn in. Authorities say he could be sworn before the country's highest court, but his group and supporters are pressing for the parliament to be reinstated, arguing that the court decision only disputed a third of the house's seats.

Thousands of Morsi supporters, backed by some liberal and secular youth groups who were behind the uprising, vowed to press on with their protest in Cairo's Tahrir Square to pressure the ruling generals to rescind their decrees and reinstate the parliament.

Tens of thousands had spent the night in Tahrir in joyous celebration of Morsi's win. By Monday morning, few had stayed in the square, which after nearly a week of a sit-ins, was reopened for traffic but a protesters' tent camp remained in place. Brotherhood officials said the protests will continue until the military responds to their demands.

On Sunday, President Barack Obama telephoned the U.S.-educated Morsi to congratulate him on his victory and offer continued support for Egypt's transition to democracy. The White House said Morsi expressed appreciation for Obama's call and "welcomed U.S. support for Egypt's transition."

Ali said the 60-year-old Morsi arrived at the presidential office on Monday for official meetings and consultations. He said his priority is to form a working presidential team until he finishes consultation over nominating vice presidents.

"His priority is the stability on the political scene," said Yasser Ali, a spokesman for Morsi's presidential campaign.

In an effort to rally support and heal national divisions, Morsi vowed to appoint diverse deputies, including a woman and a Christian. He also has reached out to other presidential hopefuls, who garnered popular support in the first round of elections.

Ali , the spokesman, said there were also consultations to form a national coalition government. The military-backed government is expected to resign later Monday, according to legal tradition after a new president is announced. Ali said he anticipates the government, headed by Kamal el-Ganzouri, would remain in a caretaker role because forming a new one "will take time."

Morsi faces enormous challenges of improving the economy and maintaining law and order ? both of which deteriorated in the post-Mubarak period. He has also promised he would nominate a non-Brotherhood member to head the government.

Standoff with Iran focus of Putin visit to Israel

(AP) ? The West's standoff with Iran over its nuclear program will be the hot topic when Russian President Vladimir Putin huddles with Israeli leaders during a 24-hour visit here.

Israel wants Russia to pressure Iran to abandon its uranium enrichment program, which Israeli and world leaderJs believe is designed to produce bombs, not energy as Iran claims.

Russia has worked with China to water down international sanctions against Iran.

Israel has warned that if the sanctions don't force Tehran to curb its nuclear ambitions, then a military strike against Iranian nuclear facilities might follow.

Putin is expected to arrive Monday morning and meet with Israel's Russian-speaking foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman, President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

On Tuesday, he heads to the Palestinian Authority and Jordan.

Bolivian police mutiny over pay

(AP) ? About 30 members of an elite Bolivian police commando unit mutinied in La Paz on Thursday, expelling their commanders and seizing their barracks along with their wives to demand higher wages.

The barracks are just 100 meters from Bolivia's presidential palace.

The protesters were demanding salaries on par with soldiers and a pension equal to 100 percent of their salaries. Bolivian police earn about $144 a month and were not appeased by a 7 percent government-decreed wage increase this year.

The mutiny broke out after wives of the police participants were thrown out of the barracks by the men's superiors.

A tear-gas grenade exploded in the tumult, but La Paz was peaceful, with families strolling around downtown enjoying a national holiday.

A spokesman for the mutineers, patrolman Edgar Ramos, said an additional 500 police across the capital had joined the protest by similarly occupying other barracks.

That claim could not be independently verified and police headquarters did not address it, saying it would issue a statement later.

A February 2003 revolt over wages at the same barracks led to a gunfight with soldiers in which 19 people were killed, mostly police.

Bolivia has 33,000 police and their institution is considered be among the country's most corrupt. It has had seven commanders in the past six years.

President Evo Morales was out of the country Thursday in Brazil for the Rio+20 environmental summit.

Morales is closer to the military than to the police.

Prosecutor Inga Bejer Engh delivers closing arguments in the trial against Anders Behring Breivik, the confessed gunman who killed 77 people last year in a bomb and shooting rampage, unseen, in the court in Oslo, Norway Thursday June 21, 2012. After nearly 10 weeks of grueling testimony of one of the worst peacetime massacres in modern history, it's time for prosecutors to decide their position on whether they think confessed mass killer Anders Behring Breivik is insane or not. (AP Photo/Berit Roald/Scanpix NTB POOL)

(AP) ? If Norwegian prosecutors get their way, no one will be held criminally responsible for the deaths of 77 people in a bomb and shooting rampage that roiled the peaceful nation.

Even though self-styled anti-Muslim militant Anders Behring Breivik insists he is sane and that he carried out the July 22 attacks for political reasons, prosecutors said in closing arguments Thursday that doubts about his mental state mean he should be sent to a psychiatric institution instead of prison.

Ultimately, it's up to the Oslo district court to decide whether Breivik is criminally insane when it presents its ruling, expected a month after the trial ends Friday.

Either way, the 33-year-old Norwegian will likely be locked up for most, if not all, of his life. But the outcome will also influence whether Norway's worst peacetime massacre goes down in history as right-wing terrorism or as the work of a bloodthirsty madman.

"I still think Breivik is clearly sane and that his rhetoric, attitudes and behavior don't differ notably from other terrorists," said Usman Rana, a Norwegian-born Muslim of Pakistani origin who writes a newspaper column.

Rana said he doubted the psychiatric dimension would have been so prominent if the perpetrator had been an Islamist extremist.

The image of global terrorism was jolted when the blond, blue-eyed gunman surrendered to police after slaughtering 69 people at the governing Labor Party's summer youth camp. Hours earlier, he had set off a bomb in Oslo's governing district, killing eight.

Breivik immediately admitted to the attacks and called them justified. The left-wing Labor Party, in power for much of the postwar era, had betrayed the country by allowing Muslim immigrants to settle in Norway, he said.

That kind of rhetoric is not uncommon among far-right fanatics in Europe, but Breivik didn't belong to any known extremist group.

He claimed to be a commander of a militant network of "Knights Templar," but investigators found no trace of it.

Even when presented with evidence to the contrary, Breivik insisted the group is real with such conviction that he must actually have believed in it, prosecutor Svein Holden said.

"On the background of Breivik's intense defense of these obviously false claims, we believe it's hard to conclude that it's an intentional lie on his part," Holden said.

The defense is likely to refute the insanity finding on Friday, the last day of the 10-week trial. Before leaving the court room Thursday, Breivik defiantly flashed a clenched-fist salute for the first time since the first week of the trial.

Many Norwegians are not so sure that he is delusional.

A poll by research firm Norstat released Thursday by Norwegian public broadcaster NRK showed 74 percent of Norwegians believe Breivik was mentally competent to be sentenced to prison. Ten percent said he was criminally insane, while the rest were undecided in the June 12-19 survey of 1,000 people. The margin of error was about 3 percentage points.

Prosecutors said their decision was based on Norwegian rules stating that defendants cannot be sentenced to prison if there is reasonable doubt about their mental health.

"When the court interprets the current rules, what people think cannot be of any relevance," Prosecutor Inga Bejer Engh said after the hearing Thursday. "When this case has been legally decided, we can sit down and have a discussion: Are the rules we have out of phase with the people?"

She also said people shouldn't worry about Breivik getting out any sooner if he's sent to a mental institution rather than a prison.

"We have murderers who have been sentenced to psychiatric care who will probably never get out again," Engh said, noting that none of them had killed 77 people.

Two teams of psychiatrists reached opposite conclusions about Breivik's mental health.

The first team diagnosed him with "paranoid schizophrenia," a serious mental illness which would preclude a prison sentence. The second team found him legally sane, saying he suffers from a dissocial and narcissistic personality disorder, but is not psychotic.

If the court opts for a prison term instead, prosecutors said their preference would be the maximum sentence of 21 years. A sentence can be extended beyond that if a prisoner is considered a menace to society.

Some of those who lost family members in the massacre were disappointed by the prosecution's decision.

"They think that imprisonment would be a more justified outcome of what happened on July 22," said Mette Yvonne Larsen, a lawyer for the bereaved.

Others said that whether Breivik spends the rest of his life in prison or in a mental institution is not the most important issue.

"I've lost the dearest thing I had," said Trond Henry Blattmann, whose 17-year-old son was killed in the shooting massacre on Utoya island. "It doesn't matter whether it's prison or hospital."
