Define Your Outdoor Space with Stamped Concrete Patios | Garden ...

A thoughtfully designed patio helps to define outdoor space and lends character to your home. Well landscaped gardens, water fountains, and decorative patio surfaces are some of the many features that can help to enhance the beauty of your house. Speaking of decorative surfaces, a report by the National Association of Home Builders indicates that the number of people, who have opted for stamped concrete patios, has increased considerably. Here are some of the several advantages of using concrete flooring:

Design Versatility: Stamped concrete can be used to duplicate a wide variety of textures. Your patio flooring can be used to duplicate cobblestones, sea shells, wood, and even stone. In fact, a polished concrete floor can be acid stained to look like a polished stone floor. Acid staining gives out a translucent and spotted finish that is ideal for patios. And unlike paint or pigment, this does not peel or flake. Yes, it does fade, but only after several years of exposure to the sun. Before you choose to acid stain your stamped floor, ensure that the colors used are promised by the manufacturer to be ?fade-proof?.

Cost: Your patio floorings can be made to emulate the appearance of natural stones marble, granite and other expensive flooring at just half the cost. The job isn?t labor intensive and easy to install and also minimizes the wast caused when laying natural stone surfaces. Concrete can take any shape and hence accommodate space restrictions, unlike natural stone floorings.

Easy to Maintain: Unlike wood, stamped concrete does not rot and warp. Stamped concrete patios do not allow weeds to grow between the supposed ?cracks? as they are one continuous surface. The cracks are mere impressions that go only partially through the surface. They are built to withstand the harshest of weather, and even if its cracks or looks faded new concrete can be poured over the old concrete.

You can either ask a professional contractor to lay the concrete for you, or do it yourself. There are several DIY kits available through home improvement stores. The process of laying decorative concrete is an art and not ideal for someone who struggles with creativity. A professional can ensure that the job is done thoroughly with creativity and lasts.

As earlier said, concrete is a versatile material and can be made to look like a wide variety of natural surfaces. Rather than spending money on imported stones, it makes sense to choose decorative flooring.

FBI deactivates about 3,000 GPS tracking devices, loses sight of your car

FBI deactivates GPS trackersFollowing a January ruling by the US Supreme Court, the FBI has deactivated some 3,000 GPS units that were potentially infringing on the Fourth Amendment. The decision seems to be making waves in the U.S. Justice Department. Andrew Weissmann, FBI General Counsel, says some of the devices have been difficult to retrieve, as the vehicles they were once tracking now move undetected. The FBI has sought temporary permission to reactivate some of the devices to locate and retrieve the hardware. Weissmann says the FBI is also developing new guidelines regarding the legality of its agent's actions -- from the application and use of tracking devices, to the extent a suspect's garbage can be searched before the agent is committing trespass. In short, the FBI is working really hard not to violate your legal right to privacy. If you happen to find something weird under you car, give 'em a call. They'd probably like it back.

Spartacus Star Jai Courtney Joins Die Hard 5

die-hard-5-jai-courtney-bruce-willis-slice-2

20th Century Fox?s months long search for the lead in their upcoming fifth installment of the Die Hard franchise, A Good Day to Die Hard, has finally come to an end. Bruce Willis is back as John McClane, but a major character in the new film is McClane?s son. The studio finally landed on Jai Courtney, an up-and-comer who most recently starred on the Starz series Spartacus: Vengeance. The role was highly sought-after, with names like Aaron Paul, James Badge Dale, Paul Walker, and Milo Ventimiglia thrown around as contenders for the part. In the end, it was down to Courtney and Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth. Hit the jump for more, including what to expect story-wise from A Good Day to Die Hard.

die-hard-5-jai-courtneyJack McClane is described as someone who may be even more of a hardass than his father (not possible). The story finds the two working together ?to keep each other alive and the world safe for democracy? despite their differences. John Moore (Max Payne) is set to direct, and the action this time around takes place in Moscow. I?m still not high on Moore as a director choice, but I think it?s smart to position someone to possibly take over the franchise/take it in a new direction once Willis bows out. Courtney will also be seen alongside Tom Cruise in One Shot and opposite Aaron Eckhart in I, Frankenstein. A Good Day to Die Hard is slated to open on February 14th, 2013.

Here?s the full press release, followed by an image from Courtney?s screen test with Willis:

LOS ANGELES (February 22, 2012) __ Following a global casting search spanning several months, Jai Courtney has nabbed the coveted role of John (Jack) McClane, Jr., the son of Bruce Willis? iconic action hero, in A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD.

A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD puts McClane on an international stage ? truly a NYC fish out of water in Moscow ? and introduces his estranged son Jack.? An apple that has not fallen far from the tree, Jack may even be more of a hardass than his father.? Despite their differences, they must work together to keep each other alive ? and the world safe for democracy.

The film begins production this April, for a February 14, 2013 release.

Courtney, studied drama at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), where he graduated in 2008. Following graduation Courtney quickly landed?guest star roles on two hit Australian shows, Packed To the Rafters followed by All Saints. Later that year, Courtney won a Theatre Critics Award as Best Newcomer for his performance in The Turning for the Perth Theatre Company. In 2009 he landed the role of Varro in the international television hit, Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Fans of the show created an uproar over Varro?s death and to this day continue to lament about it on the many Spartacus fan sites and blogs. ?Last year, Courtney landed a starring role opposite Tom Cruise in One Shot, directed by?Christopher McQuarrie.

Strong in Mind, Body & Spirit: 5 minutes with Tammy Carter ...

Big hair, glittery spray tan, tiny bikini and 5 inch plastic barbie shoes and about to parade in front of a cheering crowd and a row of serious looking judges. That?s how I met Tammy Carter. I was a novice in a women?s physique show and truly in a bizarre, surreal world. Tammy was a ?backstage athlete rangler.? These are the helpful, sensible people who ensure that nervous, carb depleted athletes get to the stage on time and in the right order. As a formerly overweight person who fought like hell to get in even remotely close to the shape needed to get?stage, I was already out of my element. To cope, and get my mind off this insane voluntary?exercise in public humiliation I was subjecting myself to, I talked to others about their lives and experiences.?(Taking your mind of yourself by immersing yourself temporarily?in the lives of others is?quite effective and I highly recommend it as a strategy to stop excessive self-consciousness.)

At any rate, I struck up a conversation with the kind and helpful?Tammy and what I found out amazed me and continues to inspire. For anyone who still harbours unseemly rigid stereotypes of blondes in bikinis, get over?your silly self?and read on!

Deb: You? have spoken in the past about how in your work as a respiratory therapist you have been alarmed at the effects of unhealthy life choices on your patients. Do you think people realize that so many chronic diseases are actually preventable.

Tammy: ?The quick answer to this is yes, I believe people do realize that chronic diseases are preventable or can at least be delayed. The message that proper nutrition, exercise, and maintaining a healthy weight reduce the risk of so many ailments is out there with easy accessability. Doctors try and counsel their patients, and the media proclaims the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. There is amazing information on the internet if you trouble yourself to look for it.So that leaves the question as to why with all of the information out there do people persist with their poor choices?

I recently read about a study that concluded that that while more than half of the people in the survey thought chronic illness was the worst thing that could happen and understood that being overweight or obese could lead to diabetes, they still maintained an un-healthy weight and followed a poor diet. Chronic disease is insidious. The symptoms creep up on you and then somewhere along the way you are confronted with a diagnosis. Even hospital workers that are confronted daily with the evidence are not immune. Many of the staff I work with appear unable to make the necessary lifestyle changes.

I made a decision as I entered my 40?s to seek out information that would keep me in the best shape possible. I did not want to be imprisoned by physical limitations and there were a great many things I wanted to accomplish especially as my children were becoming more independant. I gathered much information on my own and found that a true transformation would require that I learn to lift in the areas in the gym where many women fear to go. Luckily I have been mentored and coached in nutrition, conditioning and weight training by a very knowledgable personal trainer. I managed to achieve feats of strength in the gym that would have been beyond my wildest dreams 20 years ago. I guess my passion shows as recently I was told that it is fun to watch me work out because I look like I have so much fun.

Perhaps that is the key. Find something that you enjoy that will give you the motivation to change and pursue it!

Deb: The first time I stepped on stage in my bikini, in addition to the terror I felt the most amazing sense of confidence and accomplishment. What was that very first time like for you? How has it changed with experience?

Tammy: Stepping onstage is the culmination of months of stricter than strict training and nutrition. It is several steps beyond ?living a healthy lifestyle?. After many personal achievements on the gym floor I was curious to know if I could bring that pinpoint focus that many athletes bring to their chosen sport. A physique competition was a great way to bring another level to my fitness and an opportunity to ?get out of the box? in terms of my natural reserved nature.I loved and continue to love the process of contest preparation. I marvelled at the weekly changes in my body and thrilled to see something approaching what you see in fitness magazines. Before showtime I was counselled by my coach to enjoy my experience on show day no matter what the results. He told me to be gracious to all of my fellow competitors and to sincerely wish them well. The first time I saw myself in the mirror, my stage makeup and tan, looking lean and muscular, I barely recognized myself but I was thrilled with what I saw. I felt like I had already won. The backstage comraderie was wonderful and I was very impressed with how kind everyone was to each other. My onstage presence left a little to be desired and I probably looked like a deer in the headlights. I placed dead last in the open categorie and slightly higher in masters. However afterwards I felt like I had learned so much and that I had more potential to bring to the stage. The following 4 competitions resulted in bringing home some hardware after each one.

With experience I continue to enjoy the process and feel the sense of fun which is why I continue to compete. I still am compelled to pinch myself when I see myself in the mirror on show day and I make a point to seek out the first time competitors. I love to tell them how great they look and hear their stories. So many have overcome bigger obstacles than I have which I find inspiring.

Deb:?So you have two kids of your own, plus have fostered 11 children! What do you say to folks who don?t think mothers can get up and rock the fitness stage?

Tammy: First I would stare blankly and say ?what are you talking about?? haha. Many people may be surprised to learn just what percentage of women on stage in amazing shape are indeed mothers. All organizations have masters categories which are for competitors over 35 or 40 and have the biggest, most competitive lineups. Those same ladies hold their own as well in the open categories against younger, childless competitors. Moms are the ultimate multitaskers so if anyone is going to make a committment and make it work it is us! That being said there is a time and season for everything. For me my time came when my kids were a little bit older and could be part of my ?team?.

Deb:?I remember chatting with you backstage and we both discovered we had come from very religious backgrounds and were going against the grain with all this ?in your face? sexiness that goes along with bodybuilding shows. Can you tell us about that?

Tammy: Let me just preamble that I am not judgemental of the choices that others make in how they choose to present themselves. I just do what is the most comfortable for me. I was raised in and continue to be active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints more commonly known as Mormons. Modesty in dress as a way to show respect for our bodies is strongly encouraged. We try to be as stylish and fashionable as possible while still still maintaining coverage of our shoulders with at least a cap sleeve and shorts and skirts approaching the knee. However this is for everyday life and exceptions are made for ?athletic attire?. I consider physique competitions sport and judges can?t give me a score on a covered up body. I try and maintain the integrity of my? personal philosophy by not posing provocatively.during my presentation on stage. For photo shoot opportunities I choose settings and poses that show sexiness through strength and grace and not with poses that I would be embarrassed for my children to see. To date I have only recieved complimentary comments from those who share my faith.

Deb: Lastly, in addition to all this, you are also involved in a Global Village Build in Nepal. What is this about and how can people chip in?

Tammy: And we come finally to another subject that is near and dear to my heart! I am leading my first team to the Chitwan district of Nepal to work with families to help them build affordable homes which in turn strenghens their communities. I am actively recuiting for team members to fill the 20 spots on the build.

Global Village is the international arm of Habitat for Humanity. I love their model for helping people. The teams provide volunteer labour and the receiving family get a no profit, no interest mortgage tailored to their income. As the mortgages are repaid the funds are used to build more houses. The organization works with all backgrounds, races and religions. Joining a team is a wonderful way to make world travel more meaningful. Team members are welcomed into the community and introduced to the local culture as guests. Working and laughing together lets you forget the comforts of home and focus on the things that really matter.

My husband is already a team leader and has lead teams to Jordan, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Cambodia and China. After seeing how much fun he was having I embarked on my first trip with the organization to Kenya this past April. The leader of that team recommended me for training and I am anxious to put my knowledge to use!

I am hoping that readers will contact me to learn more and potentially join up. The build is from Nov 30 to Dec 13 2012. I am still working on the budget and itinerary but the tax deductible fee will be approximately $2100 and includes a direct donation to the local Global Village program, food, lodging transportation, medical insurance and an in country flight. Flights are arranged by individual team members in consultation with me and under certain conditions are tax deductible as well. There will be R and R in Kathmandu and an elephant safari in Chitwan National Wildlife Park. I can be reached at tammylynnrrt@hotmail.com or the newly created facebook page https://www.facebook.com/TammyandBryan

Deb: Thanks a million Tammy. Best of luck with Global Village and with your athletic pursuits!

99% A Separation

All Critics (106) | Top Critics (36) | Fresh (106) | Rotten (1) | DVD (2)

Very few movies capture as convincingly as A Separation does the ways in which seemingly honorable decisions can lead to interpersonal conflict -- even disaster.

To say the piercing Iranian film A Separation is about divorce is a bit like saying The Wizard of Oz is about a pair of slippers.

"A Separation" moves beyond one couple's sundering marriage to reveal growing rifts between generations, ideologies, religious mind-sets, genders and classes in contemporary Iran.

"A Separation" is a great movie, a look inside a world so foreign that it might as well be another planet, yet so universal that its observations are painfully familiar to anyone, anywhere.

Asghar Farhadi's emotionally epic movie is not just a masterpiece dramatically, it is a movie dramatically of its moment.

It's small. It's real. And it's deeply moving.

A tragically familiar family drama whose heartbreaking "for want of a nail" sequence of events spirals out of control at an intimate and individual level.

A Separation shows the human struggle for respect and a better life. It's a struggle rife with human frailty. Asghar Farhadi is a sly writer and director, and leaves us with questions that are provocative and elusive.

Smart, provocative, and brimming with ungovernable human emotions.

A meandering, nerve-wracking, ultimately worthwhile tour of contemporary Iranian urban life.

Above all, Farhadi?s parable teaches that a rush to judgment inevitably turns back on the judge.

It's a portrait of an essential and sympathetic human dilemma, and in that it's both real and timeless in ways that transcend borders, cultures and languages.

Is it possible, the movie asks, that children, with their belief in absolutes, have purer moral compasses than their forced-to-compromise parents?

Partly a courtroom drama, partly a political satire and partly a twisty thriller that gradually draws you in and becomes more engrossing with each new revelation.

Expectedly, the volatility is penetrating, but the feature is methodical, stewing in every last moment of unease and contemplation, stretching to a point where Farhadi is practically lapping himself.

A quietly lacerating portrait of familial discord that morphs into a wider portrait of society and law...While the setting might be foreign, its concerns are universal.

Ambiguous and enigmatic, it revolves around the termination of a marriage in contemporary Tehran.

Farhadi's carefully wrought narrative and the ways it handles the fragile emotions of its characters truly sets it apart, not only from contemporary Iranian cinema but world cinema in general.

What counts is that talented writer/director Asghar Farhadi structures it in a culturally compelling and mysterious way, while balancing all the characters to avoid easily typed "good guys" and "bad guys."

Emotionally resonant beyond the filmmaker's own country and culture, it is a compassionate yet searingly precise film that refuses to name villains, nor to let any of its protagonists off the hook

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Newsarama.com - A long time ago, in theaters not so far away, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace debuted to jam packed houses and the agape mouths of hardcore Star Wars fans everywhere. This past week's release of a remastered version of the film converted into stereoscopic 3D opened to a respectable-if-not-planet-shattering box office but still to theaters filled with costumed fans. ...

Movie Review: 'The Secret World of Arrietty' ? CBS Philly

(Credit: Walt Disney Pictures)

(Credit: Walt Disney Pictures)

By Bill Wine
KYW Newsradio 1060

?

The Secret World of Arrietty is an animated family fable that?s hand-drawn and thus not as flashy as some CGI offerings but that grows on you little by little.

And ?little? is the operative word here.

The Clock family are miniature people (four inches tall ? we?re talking tiny) who live surreptitiously beneath the floorboards in a regular-sized human family?s residence in contemporary Tokyo.

3c2bd Movie Review: The Secret World of Arrietty

(3? stars out of 4)

Arrietty (voiced by Bridgit Mendler), the daughter, is a headstrong 14-year-old who lives with her parents (Amy Poehler and Will Arnett) under a suburban home undetected by anyone in the mansion overhead, including the suspicious housekeeper (Carol Burnett).

That?s because the diminutive lodgers remain out of view unless they need to emerge from underneath the floorboards to ?borrow? something they really need to survive from their enormous homeowners (whom they call human ?beans?), such as a tissue or a sugar cube.

So, they scavenge for food and for household items that won?t be missed while they are put to ingenious uses, and they try to stay out of the way of cats, crows, and especially beans.

As we first look in on them, it?s that time in life when the tiny teenage title character is about to go out on her first borrowing, accompanied by her dad, for whom the excursion is merely an ordinary errand, while for Arrietty it?s both an adventure and a passage.

But all that changes for the Borrowers when a bedridden 12-year-old named Shawn (David Henrie), who lives with his great-aunt and has a congenital heart condition, discovers and befriends Arrietty.

When Arrietty?s parents learn that they have been discovered, they determine that the Clocks must move out of their host house.

Debuting director Hiromasa Yonebayashi establishes his upstairs-downstairs premise immediately and efficiently, then easily engages his young audience?s sense of wonder with both the beauty and danger of nature.

This anim? is an English-language version of 2010?s top-grossing hit at the Japanese box office, known there as The Borrower Arrietty.?? It?s a perspective-altering delight with a fascinating forced perspective as it explores the theme of the need to investigate the big world out there despite its inherent scariness.

Although it?s somewhat more modestly scaled, it?s in the tradition of such beloved Japanimated favorites as Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Mr. Howl?s Castle, and Ponyo, all directed by ani-maestro Hayao Miyazaki.

It?s Miyazaki who developed this film and co-wrote the captivating screenplay with Keiko Niwa based on Mary Norton?s 1952 children?s fantasy novel The Borrowers, that was turned into a live-action film in 1998.

Like those previous versions, this one was inspired by the universal whimsical phenomenon of missing household items and just where they might be disappearing to.

The animation is textured and colorful and generously detailed but delicate, while the thoughtful screenplay speaks to the heart and imagination of children everywhere.

So we?ll borrow 3? stars out of 4 for this gentle, G-rated, jumbo-shrimp adventure for the kids.

The secret?s out: The Secret World of Arrietty is more than a little enchanting.

Cambridge Consultants unveils ModStar radio architecture for ...

16 February 2012

New software defined radio architecture enables higher RF performance & lower power consumption in smaller form factors for field communications

Cambridge Consultants, a leading technology design and development firm, has introduced a new architecture, ModStar?, for the design of low power and highly efficient software defined radios (SDRs) for military communications. Bringing together Cambridge Consultants? extensive SDR experience and expertise in design of consumer mobile communications architectures with experience in military and security applications, ModStar can enable smaller, and more flexible high performance software defined radios for operation in the field.

In recent years, defence organisations around the world have invested in a variety of custom radio systems, using many different air interfaces, to perform specific tasks. However, a key challenge for operations today is ensuring that all of these different air interfaces can be interoperable in the field, and that seamless communications can be conducted on any of the legacy systems. SDR can provide exactly this capability, delivering support for multiple air interfaces within a single, flexible implementation.

SDR architectures have been used for military and defence applications, such as the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS).? This makes use of the platforms ability to be reprogrammed from a high level description of the new radio waveform to use new communications protocols. However, the SDR challenge is to find a practical implementation that meets a demanding range of requirements that often leads to complex power amplifier, filtering and antenna switching arrangements. For troops on the ground this can mean bulky, heavy radio equipment that can only be moved in a vehicle.

The ModStar architecture has been designed to enable implementation of SDR modules that can link multiple communication platforms in a lightweight device that would be far more portable for troops. Portability is further enhanced by Nujira?s highly efficient Coolteq? envelope tracking technology for power amplifiers, that can extract double the power output from a given power transistor. Equipment and battery size are minimised by reducing filtering and power consumption requirements, allowing new smaller form factors or wider bandwidths to be achieved.

The ModStar architecture uses an open loop polar modulator with non-continuous time feedback and software pre-distortion. The advantage of this architecture is that the radio design is simplified, with the most significant design challenges being moved into the digital domain where they can be resolved with an integrated and scalable solution.

Tim Phipps, Wireless Homeland Security Business Development Manager, Cambridge Consultants stated: ?As well as being more useable for troops, ModStar also delivers higher RF performance compared to alternative solutions ? enabling military organisations to maximise their use of existing communications. The polar loop modulator we have incorporated into the ModStar architecture is an extremely robust technique, that has been used in millions of mobile phones, that can deliver exceptional performance with extremely high reliability for military applications.?

A1 Answers Articles ? Diet and Gout

We know that high uric acid is the cause of gout and in most cases it is because the kidneys are inefficient in eliminating them or the body overproduces them. We also know that diet has a direct link to occurrence of gout attacks and lots of foods qualify as ?gout triggers?. If you have gout, does this mean going through life painstakingly choosing everything you eat for fear of rousing a gout attack? Of course not!

So what then is a gout-friendly diet? Recall that less uric acid means less occurrence of gout. A gout friendly diet therefore is one that limits the introduction of high uric acid foods into the system and helps the body; the kidneys in particular, better eliminate uric acid. It is one that avoids foods rich in purine (as uric acid is the product of its breakdown), keeps fat and sugar content low and keeps fiber high. It actually resembles an overall healthy diet plan! You need not be overly concerned with every single food item in your diet causing gout flares. As long as the following general guidelines are followed along with maintaining a healthy weight, then you should be eating fine.

Limit meat, poultry and fish. The key word here is limit meaning you are still allowed to eat them as long as daily intake of these purine rich foods does not exceed 170 grams. You might want to avoid eating them altogether at the height of a gout attack.

Consume more plant-based proteins. You can compensate for proteins by eating more from plant-based sources such as beans and legumes.

Avoid alcohol. According to an online survey on foods that trigger attacks in gout sufferers; the two most cited are red meat and beer. Beer contains yeast extracts that are rich in purine. Alcohol in general interferes with uric acid removal from the body as it causes the removal of water faster (you often urinate when you?re drinking) than normal causing increased uric acid levels in the blood. Never drink alcohol during a gout attack. On other days, you may drink one or two 5-ounces of wine daily.

Hydrate. Help your kidneys function better by drinking lots of fluids especially water. Aim for 8 to 16 glasses of water daily.

Eat low-fat or fat-free dairy products. Remember that fats overwork the kidneys. In fact, there is a link between drinking low-fat or skimmed milk and eating foods derived from them helping lower the risk of gout.

Choose complex carbohydrates. Eat more whole grains, fruits and vegetables instead of refined carbohydrates from white bread, cake and candy. This also introduces more fiber into your diet.

Avoid sugar. It contains too much calories and burn off easily. It is also very much linked to diabetes and obesity; two medical conditions commonly associated with gout.

These dietary changes are essential to managing gout long term. They are actually a small price to pay for avoiding the pain of a gout attack. Rather than worrying over individual food items, focus on planning your diet to include these key elements!

Theater Review: 'Chekhovek' | Theatre | Arts & Entertainment ...

(L?R) Elizabeth Fountain, Rob Leo Roy, Eddie Allen, and Celia Schaefer are holding David Anderson) in "Death of a Government Clerk," one of nine short stories adapted for the stage by Melania Levitsky. (Dan Region)

NEW YORK?Anton Chekhov, who wrote arguably four of the most magnificent plays known to us (The Seagull, The Three Sisters, Cherry Orchard, and Uncle Vanya), was also a notable short story writer. Melania Levitsky has adapted nine of those stories into Chekhovek, which she also directs, now playing at the ArcLight Theatre.

The various stories are staged fluidly, one flowing into the next, with five actors?Eddie Allen, David Anderson, Elizabeth Fountain, Rob Leo Roy, and Celia Schaefer?portraying the characters and alternately serving as narrator.

As is typical for Chekhov, the stories are suffused with humor and/or melancholy. Beginning with The Lady with the Dog, six scenes of that story are interspersed throughout the evening, although no discernible through-line is found in the presentation. In The Lady two lovers (played by Celia Schaefer and Eddie Allen) experience a bumpy road in their relationship; in fact, their future is viewed as ?a long, long road before them.?

A comic high point is Death of a Government Clerk, in which David Anderson plays an unfortunate low-level employee at the opera who happens to sneeze on a general, and then can?t get the general to accept his apology. In The Chorus Girl, Pasha (Elizabeth Fountain) tries to please an irate wife (Celia Schaefer), who claims Pasha has stolen her husband away. Suffused in guilt, Pasha gives away her most valued treasures, only to realize that she has been duped.

The Black Monk is oddly ambiguous. A mysterious figure, the monk (Rob Leo Roy) garbed in a long black cloak, slowly approaches a man (David Anderson) and pontificates about life, its virtues, its shortcomings, the nobility of the man he faces. Although the text points to a dead seriousness, the playing hints at humor. One comes to realize that the man is experiencing a descent into madness.

In The Huntsman, an arrogant man carrying a rifle and wearing a bright red vest encounters a peasant woman in the forest. Their initially innocuous conversation develops into something more: The two are actually husband and wife, and he has abandoned her for a livelier life in the city. He offhandedly hands her some money and departs. This story has particularly universal echoes that hold for modern life, at all socioeconomic levels.

Chekhovek

ArcLight Theatre
152 West 71 Street
Tickets: 866-811-4111 or www.chekhovek.com
Running time: 2 hours
Closes: March 4?

It?s always a pleasure to see the works of a great writer. However, overall, the presentation lacks the depth that a simple reading might impart. Perhaps fewer stories could have been utilized, with greater expansion into the richly human aspects of Chekhov?s thought. As it stands, the evening is entertaining but offers too light a touch.

Performances are skilled though not outstanding. However, Fountain?s playing of a 9-year-old boy in Vanka was particularly touching.

The half-dozen trunks used as scenic design by David L. Arsenault aids in fulfilling the fluidity of director Levitsky?s concept, while the simple period costumes by Erica E. Evans add to the effect.

The adaptation was taken from the translation from the Russian by Constance Garnett.

HowStuffWorks "How Phone Conferencing Security Works"

Phone conferencing is key to doing business in a global economy: It brings together associates from around the world for real-time exchanges of important information.

In business, information is gold. According to the American Society for Industrial Security, as much as 75 percent of the market value of the average American company is made up of "intellectual property assets" like patented product designs, source codes and confidential client data [source: Asis International].?

Since business executives often use phone conferences to discuss sensitive, valuable information, it's crucial that they invest in phone conferencing security. Without the proper security, disgruntled former employees and savvy hackers can eavesdrop on private phone conferences and sell the privileged information to the highest bidder. A secure phone conferencing setup will have protocols and safeguards in place for controlling access to conference information during and after the call.

In this HowStuffWorks article, we'll explain how to set up a secure phone conference that'll keep your business associates informed and corporate thieves at bay.

Photo Editing Using Digital Backdrops

Adobe Photoshop Release Starters - Adobe is great with regards to editing photos and videos professionally, but they also contain a hefty price licence plate. If you like something that's absolutely free, opt for your Album Starter.

Photoscape - sanctioned free photo editing program that is required to be installed for your computer first. It assist you view pictures as part of your albums and build a slideshow, add photos together to help make new one, and resize to your favorite and create animated gif easily by having photos or shots.

FotoFlexer - a powerful web-based photo editing that aids you air brush, enhance, retouch, distort, morph as well as add other excitement photo effects. It works by using both uploaded photos and photos already using the web. For people that happen to be photo editing beginner, it is also very convenient.

Photobie - With the exception of editing photos, you can contribute picture templates and animations. There are as well online tutorials and an network of photographers to help you by giving people tips, tricks and secrets via the official site.

Cropping in Inkscape is normally called "clipping" and it doesn't function the exact same as most cropping tools. I must conduct a Google search to figure it out, and even browsing only found a few sites that explained it in a fashion that made sense. May possibly re-posted it at my blog for ones convenience.

You should also try to watch your current actual file sizes in Inkscape. If you ever work without location the canvas measurements and go largely freeform, you can get a very large image file with out realizing it. If you've completed this and make an attempt to zoom in, Inkscape's functioning reduces significantly, according to your computer's technical specs. It modifies itself well, but possibly you have to give the idea awhile.

Probably the most advanced part with Inkscape is dealing with paths and nodes. Admittedly I am not experienced using paths and nodes nonetheless. I have used them a bit in experimentation, but typically I can't supply a good review on the inclusion of paths and nodes using Inkscape. Flattening layers is usually something that I imagine can be done, but I have yet to work it out just. That's where a "Advanced" recommendation also comes in. If you usually are comfortable using Adobe Illustrator, realizing paths and nodes in Inkscape should be simple. I never gotten comfortable enough along with Adobe Illustrator to possess a definite opinion on the paths and nodes capabilities in Inkscape (and possess not had a cause to use him or her much in Inkscape, either).

Hundreds of flights canceled in French strike

Air France canceled up to 40 percent of its long-distance flights Wednesday because of a strike by pilots and other personnel over their right to hold unannounced walkouts.

  1. Don't miss these Travel stories

    1. West Coast cruises to Hawaii increase

The islands are great place to chill out, de-stress and generally slow down. These days, though, more people are doing so before they arrive.

    2. The best cruise ships for kids
    3. Plug in at America's techiest cities
    4. The world?s weirdest restaurants
    5. KLM wants air travelers to get social in the sky

The airline is recommending that passengers postpone any flights planned through Friday, when the strike is expected to end. It's costing the company, one of the world's leading airlines, ?8 million to ?10 million ($10.5 million to $13.1 million) per day, an Air France official said.

Flights operated with partner airlines in the Skyteam alliance are also affected by the cancellations, an official with the Paris airport authority said.

As the strike entered its third day Wednesday, Air France said it expected to run 60 percent of long-haul flights and 70 percent of medium and short-range flights worldwide. The airline normally operates about 1,800 flights a day.

Paris' Charles de Gaulle and Orly airports saw six flights canceled at the last minute Wednesday morning in addition to those announced the night before, the official with the Paris airport authority said. She was not authorized to be publicly named because of the agency's policies.

The airports, normally bustling with global air traffic, were emptier than usual because of the canceled flights. But passengers who weren't warned ahead of time of cancellations expressed frustration and desperation.

"There's no solution, now it's our vacation that's ruined," said Norman Sicolt, who traveled to Charles de Gaulle from his hometown of Troyes in central France in the hope of boarding a flight to Thailand.

"We have been at the sales desk of the company, but there are no flights before February 12," he said.

The striking workers ? including pilots, cabin and ground crews ? are protesting a draft law that would require air transport workers to give 48 hours notice before going on strike.

The government argues the bill is needed to protect passengers in a country where strikes occur regularly. A similar law concerning strikes on other public transport went into effect in 2008 but doesn't affect air traffic. The bill goes to the Senate on Feb. 15.

Representatives of leading unions and the Transport Ministry are expected to meet on Friday to discuss the bill, according to the SNPL pilots' union.

Philippe Vivier, a vice president at SNPL, said the aim of the government is "to stop strikes in all the small companies" that work in air transport services.
