Greener storage for green energy

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Renewable energy solutions like wind and solar operate on nature's timetable. When the sun blazes or when the breeze blows, power is plentiful -- but not necessarily at the moments when consumers need it, like on a hot, calm summer night.

Storing energy from these intermittent sources has aroused interest, yet practical economics and basic chemistry have limited the wider use of green energy. Storage, to be viable, cannot add much to the price of renewable electricity without making it unacceptably expensive. Fossil fuels remain the world's chief energy source due to their relatively low cost.

To give renewals a fighting chance, a team led by engineers and chemists at Harvard University will use a one-year, $600,000 innovation grant from the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) program to develop a new type of storage battery. The grant may be subject to renewal beyond a year, depending on performance. The award is part of a $130-million funding effort by ARPA-E through its "OPEN 2012" program, designed to support innovative energy technologies.

Called a flow battery, the technology offers the prospect of cost-effective, grid-scale electrical energy storage based on eco-friendly small organic molecules. Because practical implementation is a core driver for the program, the researchers are collaborating with Sustainable Innovations, LLC, a commercial electrochemical system developer.

"Storage of very large amounts of energy is required if we are to generate a major portion of our electricity from intermittent renewable sources such as wind turbines and photovoltaics," says lead investigator Michael Aziz, Gene and Tracy Sykes Professor of Materials and Energy Technologies at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS). "Currently no cost-effective solution exists to this large-scale storage problem. Flow batteries may make stationary storage viable in the marketplace, and that will enable wind and solar to displace a lot more fossil fuel."

A type of highly rechargable fuel cell, flow batteries are suitable for storing large amounts of electrical energy in the form of liquid chemicals, which are flowed past the electrochemical conversion hardware and stored externally in inexpensive tanks that can be arbitrarily large. This permits the designer to independently size the electrochemical conversion hardware (which sets the peak power capacity) and the chemical storage tanks (which set the energy capacity).

By contrast, in solid-electrode batteries, such as those commonly found in cars and mobile devices, the power conversion hardware and energy capacity are packaged together in one unit, and cannot be decoupled. Consequently they can maintain peak discharge power for less than an hour before being drained. Studies indicate that 1 to 2 days (the cycle of day/night) are required for rendering renewables like wind and solar dispatchable through the current electrical grid.

To store 50 hours of energy from a 1-megawatt wind turbine (50 megawatt-hours), for example, a possible solution would be to buy solid-electrode batteries with 50 megawatt-hours of energy storage. The effective result, paying for 50 megawatts of power capacity when only 1 megawatt is necessary, however, makes little economic sense.

"Not only are existing solid-state batteries impractical for storing intermittent wind and solar energy, but flow batteries currently under development have their own set of limitations," says Aziz. "The chemicals used for storage in flow batteries can be expensive or difficult to maintain."

For example, vanadium redox flow batteries -- the type of chemistry receiving the most attention -- have limited commercial head room because the high price of vanadium sets a floor on the cost per kilowatt-hour of storage. Sodium-sulfur batteries operate with their components in a molten state, requiring the tanks to be kept at very high temperatures in hot houses. Both cost and complexity limit their use.

Aziz believes that using a particular class of small organic molecules may be the key. These molecules, which his team has already been working on, are found in plants and can be synthesized artificially for very low cost. They are also non-toxic and can be stored at room temperature. Furthermore, they cycle very efficiently between the chemical states needed for energy storage.

As an expert in materials science and a developer of high-performance flow cells, Aziz will focus his efforts on molecular and electrode electrochemistry and flow cell development. Joining him will be Roy Gordon, Thomas Dudley Cabot Professor of Chemistry and Professor of Materials Science, who will be responsible for the chemical screening and synthesis of molecules and of practical electrocatalytic and protective coatings. Al?n Aspuru-Guzik, an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, will use his pioneering high-throughput molecular screening methods to identify optimal molecules. Trent M. Molter, President and CEO of Sustainable Innovations, LLC, will provide expertise on implementing these innovations into commercial electrochemical systems.

"We think our particular approach could have advantages over other flow batteries, such as higher power density, high efficiency, inexpensive chemicals, and a safer type of energy storage," says Aziz. "The success of this program would render intermittent renewables like wind and photovoltaics dispatchable at will, and thereby permit them to supply a large fraction of our electricity needs."

Aziz foresees using next-generation flow batteries for local energy storage, such as in the basement of a house or office outfitted with rooftop solar panels or, at a larger scale, directly integrated into wind and solar farms. The technology could even out-compete lead-acid batteries for solar energy storage in remote areas without access to a grid.

"While not eliminating fossil fuels, flow battery storage potentially eliminates a barrier to doing so within the existing energy system and market," says Aziz. "The best engineering and chemistry alone are not enough to solve our energy challenges. Compatibility with current infrastructure is almost always essential, and economic viability is always essential. Flow batteries may play a huge role in our transition off of fossil fuels and I am very excited that Harvard has the opportunity to develop a potential game-changer."

Photo of rare wild cat wins contest

A rarely seen Bolivian wild cat species was photographed by a camera trap in one of the country's national parks, the first time it has been spotted there.

The photo of the cat, called an oncilla, won a category of a camera trap competition run by the magazine BBC Wildlife.

The oncilla, about the size of a house cat, is found throughout the Amazon and the tropical Andes. The cat is rarely spotted, and little is known about its life history, according to the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), whose researchers took the photo as part of a camera trap survey in the area in July 2012.

The survey captured photos of jaguars and other wildlife in Madidi, one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. The 7,335-square-mile (19,000 square kilometers) park hosts 11 percent of the world's birds, more than 200 mammal species, almost 300 fish species and 12,000 varieties of plants.

This wide array of species is found in an equally diverse set of ecosystems, from lowland tropical forests to the peaks of the High Andes.

With this evidence that the oncilla dwells in Madidi, the number of confirmed cat species in the park now stands at six, with two more waiting to be confirmed, the WCS said in a statement.

WCS researchers Guido Ayala, Maria Viscarra and Robert Wallace submitted the photo in the New Discoveries category of the BBC Wildlife competition. The winning entry received ?1,000 (approximately $1,500), courtesy of Paramo Directional Clothing Systems and the World Land Trust. The photo is featured in the December issue of the magazine.

(AP) ? The Senate has voted to accelerate the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan.

The 62-33 vote on Thursday reflected the nation's war-weariness after more than a decade of fighting.

Although the vote was for a nonbinding amendment to the defense bill, it sent a strong signal about the ongoing conflict. Democratic Sen. Jeff Merkley of Oregon sponsored the measure.

It also set the stage for a fight with the House, which passed a bill in May that calls for President Barack Obama to maintain a force of at least 68,000 troops through the end of 2014.

The House and Senate will have to reconcile their competing versions of the defense policy bill.

However soon after we relocated a couple of years back again we all did our cross-shopping and located which sticking to that provider might cost us over $1, 500 much more annually. It absolutely was a no-brainer; we all went with another insurer that has been just as widely recognized and also financially stable, however cost a smaller amount.

Rather than spending several hours calling available for automobile insurance quotations, you can now go surfing and minutes end up being watching several insurance providers rate quotes. Along with websites such as CarInsurance. possuindo, you can view the actual quotes side by side to simply observe which usually automobile insurance provider expense the least to your particular set of ranking factors.

Cell phone addiction similar to compulsive buying and credit card misuse, experts say

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? Cell phone and instant messaging addictions are driven by materialism and impulsiveness and can be compared to consumption pathologies like compulsive buying and credit card misuse, according to a Baylor University study in the Journal of Behavioral Addictions.

"Cell phones are a part of our consumer culture," said study author James Roberts, Ph.D., professor of marketing and the Ben H. Williams Professor of Marketing at Baylor's Hankamer School of Business. "They are not just a consumer tool, but are used as a status symbol. They're also eroding our personal relationships."

Roberts' study, co-authored with Stephen Pirog III, Ph.D., associate professor and chair of the department of marketing at Seton Hall University, found that materialism and impulsiveness drive cell phone addiction. Cell phones are used as part of the conspicuous consumption ritual and also act as a pacifier for the impulsive tendencies of the user, according to Roberts. Impulsiveness, he noted, plays an important role in both behavioral and substance addictions.

This study is the first to investigate the role materialism plays in cell phone addiction. According to Roberts, materialism is an important consumer value that impacts many of the decisions we make as consumers. Additionally, cell phone use and over-use have become so common that it is important to have a better understanding of what drives these types of technological addictions.

Previous studies have shown that young adults send an average of 109.5 text messages a day or approximately 3,200 texts each month. They receive an additional 113 text messages and check their cell 60 times in a typical day and on average, college students spend approximately seven hours daily interacting with information and communication technology.

"At first glance, one might have the tendency to dismiss such aberrant cell phone use as merely youthful nonsense -- a passing fad. But an emerging body of literature has given increasing credence to cell phone addiction and similar behavioral addictions," Roberts said.

Data for this study come from self-report surveys of 191 business students at two U.S. universities. Cell phones are used by approximately ninety percent of college students, and said Roberts, "serve more than just a utilitarian purpose." Cell phones are accessible at any time, including during class, and possess an ever-expanding array of functions, which makes their use or over-use increasingly likely. A majority of young people claim that losing their cell phone would be disastrous to their social lives, he said.

The $400 million buyout hoax that fooled many

14 hrs.

The "pump and dump" lives, apparently.?

Shares of ICOA Wireless?soared earlier Monday on news that Internet behemoth Google had acquired the wireless hotspot company for $400 million. The problem? The buyout never happened.?

The CEO of ICOA told Reuters in an email Monday that it never had buyout talks with Google and that it has contacted authorities to look into what it called a hoax press release.

"Someone, I guess a stock promoter with a dubious interest, is disseminating wrong, false and misleading info in the PR circles,"?ICOA CEO and Chairman George Strouthopoulos told Reuters.

According to the Wall Street Journal's "All Things D" blog, the fake press release was disseminated on PRWeb, which is a free service operated by the PR firm Vocus. The Wall Street Journal called PRWeb to ask it about the press release, but has not heard back from anyone yet.

"We are investigating the source, so far it originated from Aruba," Strouthopoulos told Reuters. He did not ?elaborate.?

In the meantime, shares of ICOA retreated to .0001 cent in later afternoon trading?after rising to .0005 cent when the two paragraph press release got investors excited and fooled some news organizations and blogs.

That quick rise and fall could have spelled swift profits for some unscrupulous?investor or investors in the type of scheme that pumps up a stock price with false information. The investor(s) then dump the shares quickly before others in the market get wind of the misinformation. Hence the "pump and dump" moniker.

Audra McDonald new 'Live From Lincoln Center' host

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Broadway superstar Audra McDonald is adding a new chapter to her long history with Lincoln Center.

The singer-actress is the new host of "Live From Lincoln Center," PBS said Tuesday.

McDonald will emcee seven broadcasts from December through spring 2013, starting Dec. 13 with "The Richard Tucker Opera Gala" and Dec. 31 with the New York Philharmonic's New Year's Eve gala.

"It's a great honor. I'm thrilled that they came to me and trusted me to do it," said McDonald, 42, whose five Tony Awards include a trophy this year for "The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess."

Her memories of the Lincoln Center performing arts complex in Manhattan run deep.

"I remember watching Beverly Sills broadcasting from the Met (the center's Metropolitan Opera House) on my PBS channel at my home in Fresno," McDonald said, adding that she was amazed at the venue's size and "inspired by the music."

As a high school student, she had the chance to visit the center and recalled thinking, "This is where I want to be some day."

That wish was fulfilled when she moved to New York to attend The Juilliard School, which has its campus there.

Stepping in as host of the PBS series "feels like it's my way of thanking Lincoln Center," she said.

"We can't imagine a more perfect match," said Elizabeth Scott, the center's executive in charge of the TV series. McDonald's passion for the performing arts is "infectious," Scott added.

McDonald, who starred in "Private Practice" as Dr. Naomi Bennett, has performed on the long-running PBS showcase several times, including programs with Elvis Costello, Patti Lupone and the New York Philharmonic.

She will be working especially hard New Year's Eve when she hosts and performs in the holiday program, "One Singular Sensation: Celebrating Marvin Hamlisch" (check local listings for time).

"We'll see if I fall down by the end of the evening, or by the middle," she said, lightly. What she'll sing is a secret for now, but McDonald said it's among Hamlisch's most famous pieces.

The composer, who died in August at age 68, created more than 40 film scores and won a Tony and the Pulitzer for Broadway's "A Chorus Line."

"Live From Lincoln Center" is in its 37th broadcast season. In recent years, artists and actors including Yo-Yo Ma and Alec Baldwin have filled the host's job that previously saw long tenures by famed opera singer Sills and TV personality Hugh Downs.

Record Powerball result of changes to boost sales

A customer purchases lottery tickets for the Powerball lottery at Foster Stationery in Bergenfield, N.J. on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012. The jackpot for Powerball's weekend drawing has climbed to $325 million, the fourth-largest in the game's history. Powerball organizers say this is the first run-up to a large jackpot that's fallen over a major holiday. (AP Photo/The Record (Bergen County), Don Smith)

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? The historic Powerball jackpot boosted to $500 million on Tuesday was all part of a plan lottery officials put in place early this year to build jackpots faster, drive sales and generate more money for states that run the game.

Their plan appears to be working.

Powerball tickets doubled in price in January to $2, and while the number of tickets sold initially dropped, sales revenue has increased by about 35 percent over 2011.

Sales for Powerball reached a record $3.96 billion in fiscal 2012 and are expected to reach $5 billion this year, said Chuck Strutt, executive director of the Des Moines, Iowa-based Multi-State Lottery Association, the group that runs the Powerball game.

There has been no Powerball winner since Oct. 6, and the jackpot already has reached a record level for the game. It was first posted at $425 million but revised upward to $500 million when brisk sales increased the payout. It's the second highest jackpot in lottery history, behind only the $656 million Mega Millions prize in March.

It took nine weeks for the Mega Millions jackpot to get that high, before three winners ? from Kansas, Illinois and Maryland ? hit the right numbers, each collecting $218.6 million for their share of the split.

With soaring jackpots come soaring sales, and for the states playing the game, that means higher revenue.

"The purpose for the lottery is to generate revenue for the respective states and their beneficiary programs," said Norm Lingle, chairman of the Powerball Game Group. "High jackpots certainly help the lottery achieve those goals."

Of the $2 cost of a Powerball ticket, $1 goes to the prizes and the other dollar is kept by the state lottery organization, said Lingle, who also is executive director of the South Dakota Lottery. After administrative overhead is paid, the remaining amount goes to that state's beneficiary programs.

Some states designate specific expenditures such as education, while others deposit the money in their general fund to help supplement tax revenue.

The federal government keeps 25 percent of the jackpot for federal taxes.

Most states withhold between 5 percent and 7 percent. There's no withholding in states without a state income tax such as Delaware, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, and Texas. A New York City winner would pay more than 12 percent since the state takes 8.97 percent and the city keeps 3.6 percent.

Powerball and Mega Millions games are seeing jackpots grow faster and higher in part because the states that play both games agreed in 2010 to sell to one another.

Both games are now played in 42 states, Washington, D.C., and the Virgin Islands. The larger pool of players means jackpots roll over to higher numbers faster, which tends to increase the buzz about the jackpots which increases sales. It all can result in higher jackpots sooner.

"It really happened with both of these games became national games," said Terry Rich, CEO of the Iowa Lottery.

Still, just seven of the top 25 jackpots occurred after January 2010 when the cross-selling began. That just points to the unpredictability of games of chance like lotteries. It still comes down to the luck of the numbers, Rich said.

It has been proven that once the jackpot reaches a certain threshold more players buy.

The Quick Shop in Ottumwa, Iowa, is one of the state's highest-volume lottery ticket sellers due to its location across the street from a John Deere farm implement factory.

"It's picking up by the minute," said store owner Mark Ebelsheiser. "We're selling probably 60 to 70 percent more than normal. When it gets up this high they really come out and get them."

Bob Allison, a retired Indian Hills Community College instructor and administrator, buys tickets weekly for a group of people at the college in Ottumwa. On Tuesday he and two golfing and fishing buddies went in together to buy additional tickets. Allison said he usually buys a few additional tickets when the jackpot gets so high.

He said he'd make a lot of people very happy if he won.

"My kids would probably retire quick," said the father of three daughters.

Between $20 and $30 million in tickets were sold between Wednesday and Saturday drawings for most of October. Once the jackpot hit $100 million on Oct. 27, nearly $38 million worth of tickets were sold by Oct. 31. As the jackpot grew to more than $200 million on Nov. 17, sales surged by nearly $70 million by the next Wednesday. Then the jackpot reached over $300 million on Nov. 24 and ticket sales over the next four days surpassed $140 million.

"Somewhere around $100 million those occasional players seem to come back into the stores in droves," said Rich, the Iowa Lottery CEO. The lottery also notices a significant increase in workers and other groups joining together in pools to combine resources to buy numbers, he said.

Trina Small, manager at the convenience store in Bondurant, Iowa, where a couple bought a $202 million ticket on Sept. 26, said sales have been heavy. She said Monday night Powerball sales were at about $800, at least $200 more than normal. She expects Tuesday and Wednesday sales to be even more.

"It's kind of like Black Friday all over again," she said.

Small doesn't usually play the lottery herself but said she may buy a chance at the record jackpot. She's just trying to decide if her chances are better buying it elsewhere since a jackpot ticket was sold at her store just two months ago ? the old adage about lightning striking twice.

"The odds are against you anyway but I'm pretty sure they're more against you getting one from this store," she joked.

Powerball has posted sales exceeding $714 million in the current jackpot run since early October and it's possible more than $1 billion in tickets will have been sold by the end of Wednesday when the next drawing is held.

A single winner choosing the cash option would take home more than $327 million before taxes.

Sharp ships first phone with an IGZO display on November 29th, ushers in a low-power LCD era

Sharp Aquos Phone Zeta SH-02E

The gray clouds of Sharp's gloomy earnings are about to get a silver lining: NTT DoCoMo is at last launching Sharp's new flagship phone, the breathlessly worded Aquos Phone Zeta SH-02E, on November 29th. When it arrives, the SH-02E will be the first smartphone to carry an IGZO-based display and show us just how well the high-brightness, low-energy invention fares in a 4.9-inch, 720p LCD. There's no known fixed pricing, although it's likely the Android 4.0 device will be sitting at the very top of its Japanese carrier's range through its Snapdragon S4 Pro, 16-megapixel camera and LTE data. Not fully convinced of IGZO's worth? Fujitsu's more conventional Arrows V F-04E is arriving a day earlier with a regular LCD and a Tegra 3, although we'd say that it's worth waiting the extra 24 hours to be a technology vanguard.

Everything About Epublishing (or Where to Find it)

Howdy folks,

Like most writers, I can?t afford to ?just write.? Like most writers, I have to hold down a day job. That?s pretty much where the similarities end.

Unlike most writers who have a day job, I don?t work 6 or 8 or 12 hours a day, four or five days a week. I work 10 to 16 hours a day, roughly 28 days a month. I don?t receive a regular paycheck with a company logo on it every week or every two weeks or once a month. My paychecks show up in varying amounts and at varying times in my PO Box or my PayPal account. Strictly speaking, the income I derive from my day job is termed ?disposable income.? To earn it, I compete with movies and miniature golf and a weekend trip to the lake and the family vacation and dinner out once a week and that new smart phone or camera or laptop or other gadget. In other words, the services I provide in my day job are not absolutely neccessary for survival. I don?t provide food, shelter, clothing or water. And let?s face it, everything else?including everything I provide?is a luxury? well, unless you?re serious about writing. If you want to see a professional outcome, you hire a professional. That?s really all there is to it.

But the fact is, some people can?t afford to pay for my services although I keep those services as affordable as possible. I constantly hear things like ?We?d really like to have you come share your knowledge about epublishing (or editing or writing or?) but we need to know the miminum you?re willing to charge and the minimum number of attendees who would be required to show up.?

(Okay, first, you?re asking me to come to you, so who?s going to show up shouldn?t be a bargaining point. On your end everybody should show up. If you want to know what I know, especially at bargain rates, showing up should be your Number One priority. Second, I?m not coming back to you with, ?Well, what?s the maximum you?re willing to pay?? only because I?m really not into bickering and I need to move on to other pressing matters.)

But I digress? leave it to a teacher to contain within him the constant urge to lecture. Anyway, It Just Is What It Is, so given that, plus my propensity to give greater weight to getting the word out than earning a paycheck from it, here are a few things you really should do if you don?t want to have to pay a guy like me to come share my knowledge about epublishing:

1. This is a biggie. Go to StoneThreadPublishing.com and read both the About page and the FAQ page. The fifteen minutes or so that you spend there will give you most of the basic knowledge you need and correct some pretty severe but common misconceptions. I also invite you to check out StoneThread as a possible publishing venue for your novel, memoir or short fiction collection. We run some excellent free contests too. See the Contests tab.

2. Go to HarveyStanbrough.com. If you haven?t already, sign up for my blog posts and get a free humorous ebook on writing. But even if you don?t sign up (content is currently open to everyone), click on the Blog tab and scroll down through the posts. You?ll find several on Epublishing and even one or two on Emarketing? and a lot of other good stuff too. Check out the Writers? Resources while you?re there, and click our Events Calendar to see all the new seminars we have coming up.

3. Go to Smashwords.com and download their free Smashwords Style Guide and Smashwords Book Marketing Guide in PDF. The author?s style is a bit convoluted, but all the information is there if you don?t mind waiding through segments of ?what you don?t need to do.?

4. This is another biggie. Go to DeanWesleySmith.com and read his Think Like A Publisher series. If you want to publish your own work on paper and/or via ebooks, this is an absolute necessity, and I am not using the phrase lightly.

5. Go to Kindle Digital Publishing at Amazon.com and read their FAQs.

6. Go to PubIt at BarnesAndNoble.com and read their FAQs.

Here are a few generalities you need to understand:

1. Smashwords, Amazon, Apple, Barnes & Noble, Diesel, Kobo, Sony et al are not publishers. They are sales venues. You are the publisher. (Okay, in the Bowker records, since you?ll want to use the free Smashwords ISBN, Smashwords will be the publisher of record, but that really doesn?t matter. In the front matter of your book it should say ?a YourName or Whatever publication.?)

2. Smashwords, Amazon and Barnes & Noble will convert your correctly formatted (see the Smashwords Style Guide or attend my upcoming seminar on The Essentials of Digital Publishing) and uploaded Microsoft Word file.

3. Amazon will not distribute your book outside of Amazon, although they currently have venues worldwide (for a list, see StoneThread?s FAQ).

4. Barnes & Noble will not distribute your book outside of Barnes & Noble. I?m not sure where their outlets are.

5. Smashwords will distribute your book to Apple, Baker & Taylor, Diesel, Kobo, Sony et al. (If you don?t opt-out in their Distribution Channel Manager, they will also distribute to Amazon and Barnes & Noble. I recommend opting out of at least Amazon if not both.)

6. You cannot open a publisher account or otherwise publish your book directly to Apple, Baker & Taylor, Diesel, Kobo, or Sony. If you want to sell your book through them, you must go through a distributor, and for my money the best one is Smashwords.

7. The print edition and the ebook edition of your book must have different ISBNs. However, you do not have to purchase an ISBN for either one. Smashwords provides an ISBN (free) for those venues that require it; Amazon and Barnes & Noble use their own stock numbering system for ebooks; and CreateSpace (for print books) also provides a free ISBN.

8. Finally, for print publishing, I strongly recommend going through CreateSpace. I can recommend someone who will format your work for print, create a cover (from your design) and submit the work to Create Space for you for under $200, but you can also do this yourself if you want to invest the time in learning the process. To check it out, go to CreateSpace.com and, you know, read the FAQs.

If you want to go through a subsidy publisher, I recommend BookLocker.com. I fiercely recommend against using AuthorHouse, iUniverse, Trafford, Wheatmark and XLibris.

Of course, for traditional, no-fees, non-subsidy epublishing, I recommend submitting your work to StoneThreadPublishing.com, where your only cost is the edit or proofread (your book has to be edited anyway) and you earn a 70% royalty if we accept your work for publication.

Okay, I?ve probably yammered on long enough. There y?go. This is pretty much everything I know about epublishing, or where to find everything I know about epublishing, and all it will cost you is a few hours of your time, total.

If you?d rather enjoy a live crash course in which you can ask questions and receive answers in camaraderie with other like-minded writers, attend my upcoming seminar on The Essentials of Digital Publishing. It?s only thirty bucks for three to four hours of instruction. Email me to register or for further information.

?Til next time, happy writing and publishing!

Harvey

But knitwear in general is rarely found in perfect condition, and will usually require some repairs, moncler sale and special care when storing and cleaning. If youe buying vintage ladies cardigans for the first time, here are some tips

for repairs and care that you can do yourself. It always best to avoid the expense of a specialist tailor if possible, and much more satisfying to restore an item to its original beauty without outside help. And it surprising easy to care

for most vintage clothes, including knitwear, as long as you are prepared to do a little by hand. If youe fallen in love with, and bought, a cardigan that worn or even holed, hopefully youl have looked at the necessary repairs before hand over your cash, and got yourself a good price that takes your valuable time into account. Depending on the kind of yarn the clothing is made from, you may be able to find a close match and darn through the existing yarn to make a relatively http://www.moncleroutletlstore.com/ invisible mend. If the damaged area is relatively unobtrusive, such as under the arm, where a lot of wear occurs, your repairs won be on show for close scrutiny anyway. If your item has a hole or has already been patched, the best alternative may be to simply cover up the area. Consider an appliqu?patch on shoulders or front panels, for example. If you pick the patch carefully, you can sometimes make it look as though it was part of the original design. Or, if the damage is lower down on the front, you could add a patch pocket or two in fabric or lace, or even knit a patch yourself in a contrasting or coordinating colour, to create a truly unique, yet still vintage piece. With a worn hem, collars, or cuffs, lace may again be your saving grace. A narrow lace edging stitched through the existing knitwear, and backed with

Why the UN must respond to rebels splitting DR Congo

Before rebels known as M23 split up Congo any further, the United Nations must help this giant African nation find a unifying identity. The same goes for Rwanda.

By the Monitor's Editorial Board / November 25, 2012

People flee a town near Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo after rebels known as M23 took over parts of eastern Congo last week.

Some countries that split apart should trouble the world?s conscience more than others. Congo, as one of the largest and most violence-prone in Africa, is one of them.

Last week, a few thousand armed rebels known as M23 took over Goma, the most important city in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Given that more than five million people have died in fighting there since 1997, the United Nations is rightly alarmed.

It is one thing if Spain?s Catalonia or Britain?s Scotland should split off. Separatism by voting, whether caused by ethnic or religion differences, doesn?t usually entail violence. Europe knows by experience not to change borders by war. But a fracturing of Congo by arms might be akin to the current civil war in Syria, where Alawites and Kurds could splinter that country at the heart of the Middle East.

Congo lies at the heart of Africa and has long been burdened by killing over its vast mineral wealth, tribal hostilities, and interventions by troubled neighbors. Mass rape has become a favored tactic of armed groups. And UN peacekeepers in the eastern provinces, known by their acronym Monusco, have too often stood by as massacres took place.

UN passivity in Congo is in contrast to the NATO and UN action in the 1990s to defend Kosovo from Serbia and later help it become independent. With so many nations now troubled by secession movements ? from Burma to Belgium to Mali and even in the United States ? the world needs a consistent, nonviolent response to such tensions over national identity.

Congo, like many former colonies, has yet to develop a unifying identity based on shared values and interests. It held its first democratic elections only in 2006. The government of President Joseph Kabila is weak, causing a corrupt Army to falter in defending the nation?s territory.

The size of western Europe, Congro can barely stand up to tiny Rwanda, which backs the M23 rebels, according to the UN. The rebels are part of a proxy fight between Rwanda?s ruling Tutsis and the Hutus who were behind the country?s 1994 genocide. Carving out a new country in eastern Congo under Tutsi control would serve the interests of Rwanda?s ruling (and minority) Tutsis.

Western pressure on Rwanda to end its meddling in Congo can only be effective if it also address the fears of Tutsis. The UN also needs to bolster Congo unity and nationalism through better peacekeeping and massive development. Land disputes in the eastern provinces are a big driver of violence.

The world has one recent example in how to help a fractured nation. The UN, led by the US, assisted southern Sudan and its largely nonMuslim population in splitting off from the Arab-dominated north. Now the UN must focus as intently on Congo, where some 60,000 people have already been displaced by last week?s rebel action. The world needs to set up more models of nations that overcome their internal differences peacefully.

Visual Impact Muscle Building Review Everything You Need to ...

This is a comprehensive Visible Impact Muscle Building evaluation. Visual Impact Muscle Building is the physique building training course by health and fitness authority Rusty Moore. Rustic is the creator from the ever popular site fitness blog fitness dark book. This website has been an innovator in providing males and females with outstanding information about how to obtain a well toned, athletic plus muscle and yet functional physique which we most often notice in the movie industry.

Visual Effect for Women is definitely my personal pick for a female?s workout. If you are looking for a program designed to help you get in shape while maintaining the feminine look, this is actually the best one out there.

This post is a Visual Effect for Women review. Rusty Moore can be described as a Health as well as fitness authority along with the creator of Visual Impact for Women: A Workout for The Slim Feminine Physique. Rusty really published the top promoting Visual Impact With regard to Muscle Building Training course. This training manual seemed to be directed at guys as well as Rusty was basically bombarded with needs for the same exercise program for women. Rusty is known for a talent with regard to searching through most of the junk within the weight loss community along with supplying time productive, final result producing and functional info. Yet it is my opinion precisely what definitely sets apart Rustic from many other weight reduction professionals is he is extremely dedicated to helping men and women acquire a toned, beautiful and athletic looking shape. This specific objective is a thing that?s not genuinely presented in several courses.

Get ready to uncover the number 1 workout with regard to muscle building, especially, angular, lean muscle that most guys dream of. Not too long a go I came across a website called Visual Impact Muscle Building. I started to look around the website and realized that this is a program that not only appears like it works but it appears doable.

What?s the purpose of weight lifting, just to develop bigger muscles? Rustic Moore, creator of the Visual Muscle Building Program does not think so. Actually, when you train according to his program, you will find that, upon some body parts, you don?t really want a lot of muscle tissues, simply because it won?t look great.

Is Visual Impact Muscle Building program the scam? This entire program has 3 phases in total and each one lasts about 2 months. The main goal of this system would be to help its clients build muscle purely with out gaining any body fat in the process. The first phase is focused on building muscle within the parts of your body that really need it. The second phase is about high muscle mass density training as well as taught me how to accomplish hybrid muscle growth.

As discussed in Visual Impact Muscle Building is a good weight lifting work out that is designed for those men who want to get a muscular and lean muscles.

Gas explosion levels Mass. buildings; several hurt

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) ? A natural gas explosion in one of New England's biggest cities on Friday destroyed two buildings, including one housing a strip club, and damaged others beyond repair but didn't kill anyone, authorities said.

"This is a miracle on Worthington Street that no one was killed," Lt. Gov. Tim Murray said at a press conference.

Firefighters, police officers and gas company workers in the area because of an earlier gas leak and odor report were among more than a dozen injured people, authorities said.

The explosion in a downtown area of Springfield, 90 miles west of Boston, blew out all windows in a three-block radius, leaving three more buildings irreparably damaged and prompting emergency workers to evacuate a six-story apartment building that was buckling.

Police Sgt. John Delaney marveled at the destruction at the blast's epicenter, where a multistory building was leveled.

"It looks like there was a missile strike here," he said.

Officials at two nearby hospitals said a total of 16 victims were transported there with injuries but none was critical.

Firefighters responded to the scene at 4:20 p.m. and were investigating the gas leak when the blast happened shortly after 5 p.m. The cause of the explosion hadn't been identified but was under investigation, they said.

Springfield, which has about 150,000 residents, is the largest city in western Massachusetts. It's known as the home of the Basketball Hall of Fame, which is not in the vicinity of the blast.

The explosion, in an area of downtown Springfield with commercial properties and residences, destroyed a building that housed a Scores Gentlemen's Club.

Area resident Wayne Davis said he felt his apartment building shake a block away.

"I was laying down in bed, and I started feeling the building shaking and creaking," he said.

The Navy veteran said the boom from the explosion was louder than anything he'd ever heard, including the sound of a jet landing on an aircraft carrier.

The blast was so loud it was heard for miles around. Video from WWLP-TV showed the moment of the explosion, with smoke billowing into the air above the neighborhood.

Mayor Domenic Sarno said it was through "God's mercy" that nobody had been reported killed in the explosion.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the individuals that have been injured and the people who have been displaced," he said, adding that emergency shelter was being set up for those unable to go home.
