Smart as a bird: Flying rescue robot will autonomously avoid obstacles

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Cornell researchers have created an autonomous flying robot that is as smart as a bird when it comes to maneuvering around obstacles.

Able to guide itself through forests, tunnels or damaged buildings, the machine could have tremendous value in search-and-rescue operations. Small flying machines are already common, and GPS technology provides guidance. Now, Ashutosh Saxena, assistant professor of computer science, and his team are tackling the hard part: how to keep the vehicle from slamming into walls and tree branches. Human controllers can't always react swiftly enough, and radio signals may not reach everywhere the robot goes.

The test vehicle is a quadrotor, a commercially available flying machine about the size of a card table with four helicopter rotors. Saxena and his team have already programmed quadrotors to navigate hallways and stairwells using 3-D cameras. But in the wild, these cameras aren't accurate enough at large distances to plan a route around obstacles. So, Saxena is building on methods he previously developed to turn a flat video camera image into a 3-D model of the environment using such cues as converging straight lines, the apparent size of familiar objects and what objects are in front of or behind each other -- the same cues humans unconsciously use to supplement their stereoscopic vision.

Graduate students Ian Lenz and Mevlana Gemici trained the robot with 3-D pictures of such obstacles as tree branches, poles, fences and buildings; the robot's computer learns the characteristics all the images have in common, such as color, shape, texture and context -- a branch, for example, is attached to a tree. The resulting set of rules for deciding what is an obstacle is burned into a chip before the robot flies. In flight the robot breaks the current 3-D image of its environment into small chunks based on obvious boundaries, decides which ones are obstacles and computes a path through them as close as possible to the route it has been told to follow, constantly making adjustments as the view changes. It was tested in 53 autonomous flights in obstacle-rich environments -- including Cornell's Arts Quad -- succeeding in 51 cases, failing twice because of winds. The results were presented at the International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems in Portugal Oct. 7-12.

Saxena plans to improve the robot's ability to respond to environment variations such as winds, and enable it to detect and avoid moving objects, like real birds; for testing purposes, he suggests having people throw tennis balls at the flying vehicle.

The project is supported by a grant from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

Jessica Dean's Healthy Living: New Breast Cancer Screening - Kark

Three-dimensional breast imaging can ultimately spare some women from an unnecessary biopsy.

Using this technology it may appear to be a traditional mammography machine, but the images it captures are quite different.? They can see everything in 3-d. That's important because some women's breast tissue appears white in 2-d images? making it difficult to detect possible tumors which also appear white.

For example, the two images side by side in the 2-d picture, its difficult to see a tumor, but if you look at the same breast using 3-d imaging you can see a distinct mass. The hope is it would allow doctors to catch problems a year or two earlier than they would in a traditional mammogram.

Here's some even better news...The 3-d mammogram is covered by most insurance providers.

(AP) ? It began around nightfall on Sept. 11 with around 150 bearded gunmen, some wearing the Afghan-style tunics favored by Islamic militants, sealing off the streets leading to the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi. They set up roadblocks with pick-up trucks mounted with heavy machine guns, according to witnesses.

The trucks bore the logo of Ansar al-Shariah, a powerful local group of Islamist militants who worked with the municipal government to manage security in Benghazi, the main city in eastern Libya and birthplace of the uprising last year that ousted Moammar Gadhafi after a 42-year dictatorship.

There was no sign of a spontaneous protest against an American-made movie denigrating Islam's Prophet Muhammad. But a lawyer passing by the scene said he saw the militants gathering around 20 youths from nearby to chant against the film. Within an hour or so, the assault began, guns blazing as the militants blasted into the compound.

One of the consulate's private Libyan guards said masked militants grabbed him and beat him, one of them calling him "an infidel protecting infidels who insulted the prophet."

The witness accounts gathered by The Associated Press give a from-the-ground perspective for the sharply partisan debate in the U.S. over the attack that left U.S. ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans dead. They corroborate the conclusion largely reached by American officials that it was a planned militant assault. But they also suggest the militants may have used the film controversy as a cover for the attack.

The ambiguity has helped fuel the election-time bickering in the United States ever since.

The Obama administration has sent out muddled messages whether it was a planned attack or a mob protest that got out of control. A day after the attack, President Barack Obama referred to "acts of terror." He told CBS' "60 Minutes" in an interview aired the following Sunday that he believed those involved "were looking to target Americans from the start."

Within 24 hours of the attack, both the embassy in Tripoli and the CIA station chief sent word to Washington that it was a planned militant attack. Still, days later, the U.S. ambassador to the U.N., Susan Rice, said the attack began as a spontaneous protest over the film.

Republicans, embroiled in a heated presidential campaign, seized on the confusion. They have accused the Obama administration of being hesitant to call it a "terrorist attack" linked to al-Qaida because that would weaken one of Obama's key campaign selling points ? that under his watch, al-Qaida had been weakened and Osama bin Laden had been killed..

As that debate roiled, the actual events ? and their meaning ? became somewhat skewed in the mouths of politicians. One assumption often made in the back-and-forth is that if the attack was planned, then it must have been linked to al-Qaida.

Ansar al-Shariah, the group whose members are suspected in the attack, is made up of militants with an al-Qaida-like ideology, but it is not clear whether it has any true ties to the terror organization. Made up mainly of veterans of last year's civil war, it is one of the many powerful, heavily armed militias that operate freely in Libya and in Benghazi, while government control remains weak. Some Benghazi officials have praised Ansar al-Shariah for helping keep order in the city, even as they note its jihadi ideology.

With its arsenal of weapons, the group is capable of carrying out such an attack on the consulate on its own and even on relatively short notice. Islamist militias in Benghazi had in previous months threatened to attack the compound.

U.S. officials say they are still investigating whether there is an al-Qaida connection. They say members of Ansar al-Shariah called members of al-Qaida's branch in North Africa outside of Libya and boasted of the attack. The administration has even said it is prepared to carry out drone strikes against the branch, known as al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, or AQIM, if a link is proven. But the officials also acknowledge the calls alone do not yet prove AQIM was involved.

A day after the Benghazi attack, an unidentified Ansar al-Shariah spokesman said the militia was not involved "as an organization" ? leaving open the possibility members were involved. He praised the attack as a popular "uprising" sparked by the anti-Islam film, further propagating the image of a mob attack against the consulate.

So far, the attackers' motives can only be speculated at.

Yasser el-Sirri, a former Egyptian militant who runs the Islamic Observation Center in London closely tracking jihadi groups, said the attack "had nothing to do with the film but it was a coincidence that served the (militants') purpose."

He believes the ambassador was the target and the attackers may have been inspired by an al-Qaida call to avenge the death of a top Libyan jihadist on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the United States in 2001. But he offered no firm evidence that was the motive.

The news trickled out slowly the night of the attack, with initial reports overshadowed by the storming of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo by protesters angry over the film. It was only the next morning that Stevens' death was confirmed.

On the day of the attack and the next day, The Associated Press referred to it as a mob attack, based on Libyan officials' comment that there was a significant unarmed protest at the time. In reporting the following days, AP referred to it as an "armed attack" and detailed its organized nature.

The past week, the AP has gathered accounts from five witnesses, including one of the embassy guards and several people living next door to the consulate compound who were present when the militants first moved in. Most spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals for talking about the attack.

The neighbors all described the militants setting up checkpoints around the compound at about 8 p.m. The State Department's timeline says the attack itself began at around 9:40 p.m.

Khaled al-Haddar, a lawyer who passed by the scene as he headed to his nearby home, said he saw the fighters gathering a few youths from among passers-by and urged them to chant against the film.

"I am certain they had planned to do something like this, I don't know if it was hours or days, but it was definitely planned," said al-Haddar. "From the way they set up the checkpoints and gathered people, it was very professional."

The guard said he saw no protesters. He heard a few shouts of "God is great," then a barrage of automatic weapons fire and rocket-propelled grenades began, along with barrages from heavy machine guns mounted on trucks.

The attackers set fire to the main consulate building. Stevens and another staffer, caught inside amid the confusion, died of smoke inhalation.

The attack came from the front and the side. A neighbor whose house is on side of the consulate compound said militants with their faces wrapped in scarves attacking.

Because of the checkpoints, "it felt like our neighborhood was occupied, no one could get out or in," he said.

The effectiveness of the roadblocks was later revealed in the State Department's account of the evacuation. It described how the rescue force came under heavy fire and grenade attacks as they tried to leave the consulate area.

They evacuated staffers to a security compound across town, where they continued to come under fire. A precision mortar hit the compound's building at 4 a.m., killing two other Americans.

(AP) ? It's scratchy, lasts only 78 seconds and features the world's first recorded blooper.

The modern masses can now listen to what experts say is the oldest playable recording of an American voice and the first-ever capturing of a musical performance, thanks to digital advances that allowed the sound to be transferred from flimsy tinfoil to computer.

The recording was originally made on a Thomas Edison-invented phonograph in St. Louis in 1878.

At a time when music lovers can carry thousands of digital songs on a player the size of a pack of gum, Edison's tinfoil playback seems prehistoric. But that dinosaur opens a key window into the development of recorded sound.

"In the history of recorded sound that's still playable, this is about as far back as we can go," said John Schneiter, a trustee at the Museum of Innovation and Science, where it will be played Thursday night in the city where Edison helped found the General Electric Co.

The recording opens with a 23-second cornet solo of an unidentified song, followed by a man's voice reciting "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and "Old Mother Hubbard." The man laughs at two spots during the recording, including at the end, when he recites the wrong words in the second nursery rhyme.

"Look at me; I don't know the song," he says.

When the recording is played using modern technology during a presentation Thursday at a nearby theater, it likely will be the first time it has been played at a public event since it was created during an Edison phonograph demonstration held June 22, 1878, in St. Louis, museum officials said.

The recording was made on a sheet of tinfoil, 5 inches wide by 15 inches long, placed on the cylinder of the phonograph Edison invented in 1877 and began selling the following year.

A hand crank turned the cylinder under a stylus that would move up and down over the foil, recording the sound waves created by the operator's voice. The stylus would eventually tear the foil after just a few playbacks, and the person demonstrating the technology would typically tear up the tinfoil and hand the pieces out as souvenirs, according to museum curator Chris Hunter.

Popping noises heard on this recording are likely from scars left from where the foil was folded up for more than a century.

"Realistically, once you played it a couple of times, the stylus would tear through it and destroy it," he said.

Only a handful of the tinfoil recording sheets are known to known to survive, and of those, only two are playable: the Schenectady museum's and an 1880 recording owned by The Henry Ford museum in Michigan.

Hunter said he was able to determine just this week that the man's voice on the museum's 1878 tinfoil recording is believed to be that of Thomas Mason, a St. Louis newspaper political writer who also went by the pen name I.X. Peck.

Edison company records show that one of his newly invented tinfoil phonographs, serial No. 8, was sold to Mason for $95.50 in April 1878, and a search of old newspapers revealed a listing for a public phonograph program being offered by Peck on June 22, 1878, in St. Louis, the curator said.

A woman's voice says the words "Old Mother Hubbard," but her identity remains a mystery, he said. Three weeks after making the recording, Mason died of sunstroke, Hunter said.

A Connecticut woman donated the tinfoil to the Schenectady museum in 1978 for an exhibit on the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Edison company that later merged with another to form GE. The woman's father had been an antiques dealer in the Midwest and counted the item among his favorites, Hunter said.

In July, Hunter brought the Edison tinfoil recording to California's Berkeley Lab, where researchers such as Carl Haber have had success in recent years restoring some of the earliest audio recordings.

Haber's projects include recovering a snippet of a folk song recorded a capella in 1860 on paper by Edouard-Leon Scott de Martinville, a French printer credited with inventing the earliest known sound recording device.

Haber and his team used optical scanning technology to replicate the action of the phonograph's stylus, reading the grooves in the foil and creating a 3D image, which was then analyzed by a computer program that recovered the original recorded sound.

The achievement restores a vital link in the evolution of recorded sound, Haber said. The artifact represents Edison's first step in his efforts to record sound and have the capability to play it back, even if it was just once or twice, he said.

"It really completes a technology story," Haber said. "He was on the right track from the get-go to record and play it back."

Suspect employee is scamming FMLA leave? - Business ...

When an employee takes FMLA leave because her physician says she?s too sick to work and needs to stay home, it?s natural to assume she?ll follow the doctor?s orders.

But what if you discover that she isn?t?and is instead working for someone else during her leave? Can you terminate her? Of course.

As long as you have a reasonable belief that she?s using FMLA leave for something other than its intended purpose, a court is unlikely to second-guess your disciplinary decision.

Recent case: Jadwiga was a physician in a municipal agency. When she developed ulcers and clinical depression, her doctor certified that she needed FMLA leave and couldn?t do her job.

The certification restricted her to her home and stated that she could ?not work/attend school.?

That didn?t stop Jadwiga from doing work for another city, telecommuting from her home. She was terminated for abusing FMLA leave.

She sued, alleging interference with her FMLA leave rights.

The court threw out her case. It reasoned that she was fired because her employer reasonably believed she was abusing FMLA leave. After all, if she had been ordered to stay home and do no work, working for another city certainly constituted FMLA leave abuse. (Warwas v. City of Plainfield, No. 11-1736, 3rd Cir., 2012)

Final note: Be sure that you investigate all suspected leave abusers, not just employees who take FMLA leave.

Multi-window feature could be headed to Galaxy S3 in Android 4.1.2 update

The Galaxy S3 may have just been updated to Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean in Europe, but it seems Samsung may already be focusing on the next major software update. According to reports from SamMobile, the S3 will be updated to Android 4.1.2 before the end of the year, and that new firmware will also include one of the Galaxy Note 2's killer features -- "multi-window" support.

The Note 2's multi-window feature, shown in our quick demo video above, allows true multi-tasking by having two applications open on-screen at any one time -- for example, a browser window up top, and a YouTube video down below. Not all apps are supported yet, but all major Google and Samsung apps work just fine, as do some third-party offerings like Twitter.

SamMobile has a pretty decent track record for revealing Samsung software secrets ahead of time, so there's a good chance they're right about multi-view on the S3. And as the international Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 share much of their hardware, it shouldn't be a huge technical challenge to get multi-view up and running on the S3. Nevertheless, if these reports are true, we're sure S3 owners will be eagerly awaiting that 4.1.2 update.

Space shuttle Endeavour met with awe on trip through Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES | Sat Oct 13, 2012 8:47am EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The retired space shuttle Endeavour rolled through Los Angeles at a tortoise-like crawl on Friday, squeezing through narrow streets as it headed to its new permanent home at a local museum.

Endeavour nosed out of Los Angeles International Airport before dawn on Friday to begin a two-day, 12-mile (19-km) journey atop a massive wheeled transporter to the California Science Center on the edge of downtown.

The shuttle, which flew from 1992 to 2011, will become a tourist attraction at the center. Endeavour was largely built in southern California and was a workhorse of the U.S. space program, flying 25 missions.

Its first scheduled stop on Friday was a strip mall parking lot where a few hundred spectators marveled at it. The shuttle then resumed its journey through the city.

"I grew up in central Florida and saw many shuttle launches, but this is the first time I've ever been up close to one," said Stephen Caldwell, 38, who was in town on business and spotted the spaceship from his hotel window.

"This really is a big part of American history and to be able to see it here is really special," he said.

The shuttle is 122 feet long and 78 feet wide and stands 5 stories tall at the tail - which police said makes it the largest object ever to move through Los Angeles. Its combined weight with the transporter is 80 tons.

Organizers say only a few inches separate Endeavour's wings from structures along the route, and workers have felled 400 trees along curbs to clear a path. The science center will plant more than 1,000 trees to make up for their loss.

Some street lights, traffic signals, power poles and parking meters also are being temporarily removed.

The shuttle will pause again to avoid rush hour traffic on Friday evening before crossing the 405 freeway, the nation's busiest thoroughfare. On Saturday morning it will appear at a massive rally outside an arena in the nearby city of Inglewood.

OTHER SHUTTLES FIND HOMES

The project to move Endeavour will cost over $10 million, said Shell Amega, a spokeswoman for the science center. Charitable foundations and corporations have donated money and services for the move.

The center beat out a number of other institutions when the U.S. space agency NASA chose it last year as the permanent home for Endeavour, which was taken out of service because of the end of NASA's shuttle program.

Endeavour has hop-scotched across the country from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on the back of a modified Boeing 747. It had been parked at the airport in Los Angeles since arriving on September 21 after a ceremonial piggyback flight around California.

"To see the real thing for me was just really important. I've watched every launch, even the one that blew up," said retired teacher Celestine Palmer, referring to the 1986 Challenger disaster. She wore a T-shirt that read "I Love My Space Shuttle."

Endeavour was built to replace Challenger, using spare parts from two prior shuttles, according to Ken Phillips, aerospace curator at the science center.

The shuttle will be displayed in a temporary hangar-style metal structure to protect it from the elements. In 2017, a 200-foot- (61-meter)-tall structure will open in which Endeavour will stand vertically, Phillips said.

The other remaining shuttles also have found homes.

The Smithsonian in Washington has Discovery at its Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center museum in Virginia. New York City has the prototype shuttle Enterprise at its Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum. And the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral in Florida has Atlantis, which the center will move to an on-site visitor complex next month. Political junk mail boosts U.S. Postal Service

At least someone likes junk mail.

The U.S. Postal Service, which is struggling with debt and low cash flow, has received a boost due to the tons of political mail being sent this election season, including pieces from Super PACs, which are willing to pay the highest postage rates, according to CNN.

"We do expect election mail and the current holiday mailing season to help us get through this month's low point in our cash flow," USPS spokesman David Partenheimer told CNN, while admitting that the "liquidity situation" for the USPS is still "serious."

The U.S. postal service is struggling with debt and low cash flow. (The Atlantic Wire)

The post office lost $5.1 billion in its 2011 fiscal year, after experiencing a 5.8 percent decline in revenue for first-class mail, according to the Washington Post. The Post goes on to say "earlier this year, it was forced to default on two payments due to the Treasury totaling $11.1 billion for future retiree health benefits because it lacked sufficient cash reserves."

Now the USPS appears to have found a reprieve, after candidates, special interest groups and political parties are using the service more than in previous elections to get their messages across to voters. Super PACs -- a political-action committee allowed to raise and spend unlimited amounts of money from corporations, unions, individuals and associations -- are spending more on postage because "they don't qualify for postal service discounts of about 8 cents to 12 cents apiece reserved for candidates and political parties," said CNN.

In another attempt to raise much-needed cash, the U.S. Postal Service announced this week that it will increase first-class postage rates by one cent, to 46 cents. The price increase will become effective on Jan. 27, and will include a 2.57 percent bump for all USPS services.

Democrats are spending more with the USPS than the Republicans -- $17.8 million compared with $10.2 million -- at this point, according to CNN, which quotes an analysis of campaign costs by the Center for Responsive Politics.

And there's still over three weeks remaining before the Nov. 6 election.

Tigers have slight edge

You can?t predict baseball, but you can at least lay out the parameters. So let?s take a look at what the Tigers and Yankees have in store for us in the American League Championship Series.

The Teams

Detroit Tigers vs. New York Yankees

The Matchups

Game 1?Saturday in New York: Doug Fister vs. Andy Pettitte
Game 2?Sunday in New York: Anibal Sanchez vs. Undecided
Game 3?Tuesday in Detroit: Undecided vs. Justin Verlander
Game 4 Wednesday in Detroit: Undecided vs. Max Scherzer
Game 5?(if necessary) Thursday in Detroit
Game 6 (if necessary) next Saturday in New York
Game 7 (if necessary) next Sunday in New York

Analysis: The Tigers already have their rotation mapped out for the entire series, but there?s still quite a bit of uncertainty for the Yankees. Will Hiroki Kuroda go on short rest in Game 2 or will we see David Phelps? If it?s Phelps, you have to like the Tigers? chances of leaving New York with at least one win.

Because he was needed in Game 5 of the ALDS yesterday, CC Sabathia would have to go on short rest in Game 3 in order to match up against Justin Verlander. This would set them up to duel again in a potential Game 7. That would be pretty fun. It?s interesting that the Tigers are prepared to give two starts to Anibal Sanchez in the series as opposed to one for Max Scherzer. Sanchez has been solid for nearly two months now, so that?s no slight on him, but perhaps Jim Leyland decided to give Scherzer?s shoulder some extra recovery time.

The Storylines

  • The Yankees took the season series 6-4 while outscoring the Tigers 58-48.
  • The Yankees won?t have C.C. Sabathia in Game 1, but Andy Pettitte is a pretty good alternative. After all, the 40-year-old left-hander has started more postseason games than anyone. He allowed three runs over seven innings in a loss to the Orioles in Game 2 of the ALDS on Monday.
  • What will almost certainly command the most attention is the continuing saga of Alex Rodriguez. How much will he play? Joe Girardi opted to use Eric Chavez against Jason Hammel yesterday because of his numbers against right-handed pitching. Meanwhile, the Tigers? projected rotation is full of right-handed starters. My guess is that A-Rod will start Game 1 tonight, but he could continue to sit in certain matchups.
  • Justin Verlander had a 5.57 ERA in eight career postseason starts before dominating the Athletics to the tune of a 0.56 ERA and 22 strikeouts over 16 innings during the ALDS. Is this finally his time to shine on the big stage?
  • If the Yankees get two starts out of CC Sabathia during this series, one of them will have to be on short rest. They can either use him on regular rest in Game 4, setting him up for a start on three days? rest in a potential Game 7 or have him go on short rest in Game 3 and regular rest in a potential Game 7.
  • Will the Yankees offense show up? They managed to outlast the Orioles in the ALDS despite hitting just .211 as a team while scoring 16 runs in five games. Derek Jeter had more hits (eight) than Alex Rodriguez, Nick Swisher and Robinson Cano combined (six). It?s unrealistic to think that everyone will get hot at the same time, but this lineup is too talented to be this bad. Right?
  • Likewise, the Tigers held off the surprising Athletics in the ALDS without a ton of help from their big bats. Austin Jackson was 5-for-20 (.250) with seven strikeouts while Miguel Cabrera went 5-for-20 (.250) with two doubles and an RBI and Prince Fielder went 4-for-21 (.190) with one home run and two RBI. Their lineup isn?t nearly as deep or scary as the Yankees, so they need contributions from this important trio in order to advance.
  • Jose Valverde and Joaquin Benoit combined to give up five runs over 4 2/3 innings against the Athletics. Meanwhile, the Yankees bullpen held the Orioles to just one run over 11 1/3 innings for the entire series. The Tigers? bullpen was a concern even before the ALDS, so you have to give the Yankees the edge in the late innings.

Prediction

You have to like that the Yankees have the home-field advantage, especially considering the Tigers were not a very good road team during the regular season, but I?m just not a fan of how New York?s rotation lines up for this series. Meanwhile, the Tigers will be well-rested. They are also the younger team and seemingly healthier, too. Jose Valverde might make this pick look silly if he proves to be an adventure in the late innings, but I think they will take it.

Skydiver breaks sound barrier

Highlights from Felix Baumgartner's leap into the record books

Austrian Felix Baumgartner has become the first skydiver to go faster than the speed of sound, reaching a maximum velocity of 833.9mph (1,342km/h).

In jumping out of a balloon 128,100ft (24 miles; 39km) above New Mexico, the 43-year-old also smashed the record for the highest ever freefall.

He said he almost aborted the dive because his helmet visor fogged up.

It took just under 10 minutes for him to descend. Only the last few thousand feet were negotiated by parachute.

Once down, he fell to his knees and raised his fists in triumph. Helicopter recovery teams were on hand moments later.

The jump in numbers

  • Exit altitude: 128,100ft; 39,045m
  • Freefall time: 4'20"
  • Freefall distance 119,846ft; 36,529m
  • Max velocity: 833.9mph; 1,342.8km/h; Mach 1.24

"Let me tell you - when I was standing there on top of the world, you become so humble. You don't think about breaking records anymore, you don't think about gaining scientific data - the only thing that you want is to come back alive," he said afterwards at a media conference.

None of the new marks set by Baumgartner can be classed as "official" until endorsed by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI).

Its representative was the first to greet the skydiver on the ground. GPS data recorded on to a microcard in the Austrian's chest pack will form the basis for the height and speed claims that are made. These will be submitted formally through the Aerosport Club of Austria for certification.

There was concern early in the dive that he was in trouble. Baumgartner was supposed to get himself into a delta position - head down, arms swept back - as soon as possible after leaving his capsule. But the video showed him tumbling over and over.

Eventually, however, he was able to use his great experience, from more than 2,500 career dives, to correct his fall and get into a stable configuration.

Even before this drama, it was thought the mission might have to be called off. As he went through last-minute checks inside the capsule, it was found that a heater for his visor was not working. This meant the visor fogged up as he exhaled.

"This is very serious, Joe," he told retired US Air Force Col Joe Kittinger, whose records he was attempting to break, and who was acting as his radio link in mission control at Roswell airport. The team took a calculated risk to proceed after understanding why the problem existed.

Baumgartner's efforts have finally toppled records that have stood for more than 50 years.

The previous highest, farthest, and longest freefall was made by Kittinger, who leapt from a helium envelope in 1960. His altitude was 102,800ft (31km). (His mark for the longest freefall remains intact; he fell for more than four and a half minutes before deploying his chute; Baumgartner was in freefall for four minutes and 19 seconds).

Kittinger, now an octogenarian, has been an integral part of Baumgartner's team, and has provided the Austrian with advice and encouragement whenever the younger man has doubted his ability to complete such a daring venture.

"Felix did a great job and it was a great honour to work with this brave guy," the elder man said.

The 43-year-old adventurer - best known for leaping off skyscrapers - first discussed the possibility of beating Kittinger's records in 2005.

Since then, he has had to battle technical and budgetary challenges to make it happen.

What he was proposing was extremely dangerous, even for a man used to those skyscraper stunts.

At Sunday's jump altitude, the air pressure is less than 2% of what it is at sea level, and it is impossible to breathe without an oxygen supply.

Others who have tried to break the records have lost their lives in the process.

Baumgartner's team built him a special pressurised capsule to protect him on the way up, and for his descent he wore a next generation, full pressure suit made by the same company that prepares the flight suits of astronauts.

Although the jump had the appearance of another Baumgartner stunt, his team stressed its high scientific relevance.

The researchers on the Red Bull Stratos project say it has already provided invaluable data for the development of high-performance, high-altitude parachute systems, and that the lessons learned will inform the development of new ideas for emergency evacuation from vehicles, such as spacecraft, passing through the stratosphere.

Nasa and its spacecraft manufacturers have asked to be kept informed.

"Part of this programme was to show high-altitude egress, passing through Mach and a successful re-entry back [to subsonic speed], because our belief scientifically is that's going to benefit future private space programmes or high-altitude pilots; and Felix proved that today," said Art Thompson, the team principal.

A BBC/National Geographic documentary is being made about the project and will probably be aired in November.

Pouring Homemade Chocolate

Chocolate. What is it with girls and chocolate? You don?t find many of us who are neutral on the subject. I was, though. I didn?t see the point, really. Give me a chunk of goat cheese on nice cracker and call it a day. My eyes, as they say, have been opened. I am interested in chocolate, of course, out of a strictly scientific inquiry into its anti-oxidant benefits. Of course?

Homemade Chocolate, Cocoa Powder and Hazelnuts

Chocolate has long been prized as a fortifying elixir. Montezuma, the Aztec emperor famous for his revenge, said that chocolate was a ?divine drink, which builds up resistance and fights fatigue.? That?s right?we used to drink the stuff. And cocoa beans were ground with stones. The technology for a Snickers bar was a good 600 years off at that point.

Homemade Chocolate Ingredients

If ?chocolate? is synonymous with ?candy bar? around your house, you might be surprised to learn that the cocoa bean is crunchy and bitter. You get two fractions from cocoa beans ? the cocoa powder and the cocoa butter. Early on, chocolate was simply cocoa powder, cocoa butter and sugar. Technology made chocolate smoother, creamier and shinier; food conglomerates have made chocolate cheaper by substituting yucky vegetable oils, cheap fillers and very little of the precious cocoa bean. Good quality dark chocolate has very rich, complex flavours and cocoa buffs can debate single origin chocolate the way oenophiles can sniff out tobacco notes in a malbec.

Homemade Chocolate, Melting Coconut Oil

Cocoa beans contain a whole lot of biologically interesting substances, namely caffeine and theobromine ? they fight fatigue! ? and compounds known to evoke the same chemical response in the brain as falling in love. That?s why girls like chocolate! Cocoa is also incredibly rich in compounds called flavonols, which are potent anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant chemicals. It is for these flavonols that you want to make your own, unprocessed, chocolate. Processing can degrade a lot of these healthful compounds.

Homemade Chocolate Stirring

Making your own chocolate can be inexpensive or a bit pricey, depending on the ingredients you use. If you typically buy good chocolate, you will definitely save money per bar.

Recipe Type:?Dessert

?

  • ? cup of either pure cocoa butter or virgin coconut oil
  • ? ? ? cup of raw, ethically sourced cocoa powder
  • 2-3 tbsp of honey or maple syrup
  • ? tsp of vanilla bean seeds
  • optional ? unsweetened dried fruit or raw nuts of choice, plus up to ? tsp of cinnamon and/or cardamom
  1. Line a small loaf pan with a piece of parchment large enough that it wraps up two sides. This will make the chocolate easy to remove later on. Alternately, you could use silicone muffin cups for medallions. Sprinkle dried fruit or nuts across bottom of pan, if using.
  2. In a small saucepan, melt your fat over low heat.
  3. When melted, add cocoa powder and honey and stir to incorporate for 2-3 minutes. ? cup cocoa and 3 tbsp honey will give you a seriously dark chocolate. ? cup cocoa and 2-3 tbsp honey is milder and sweeter.
  4. Turn off heat and stir in vanilla bean and spices, if using.
  5. Pour into loaf pan or cups and refrigerate until hard, at least 2 hours.
  6. Remove from fridge, cut into bars or just devour the whole darn thing. Note that this chocolate will be a bit more melt-y than the store-bought kind.

Because honey is a heavier substance, it may settle to the bottom of the chocolate. This creates a nice, fudgy layer but if you prefer a standard texture, stick to maple syrup.

The Galaxy S III Mini: Samsung's latest device underwhelms

The Samsung Galaxy S III Mini looks like a chip off the old block ? but its specs are firmly middle-of-the-road.?

In a press statement, Samsung said the Galaxy S III Mini will ship with a 4-inch screen ? on par with the Apple iPhone 5, but smaller than the 4.8-inch display on the original Galaxy S III. (There's an undeniable irony in calling this thing "Mini," of course, considering that just a couple of years ago, before the big-screen arms race really began, a four inch display would have qualified a device for "Jumbo" status.)?

The specs released by Samsung indicate a firmly middle-of-the-road device: A?1 GHz dual-core processor?(the Galaxy S III has a quad-core processor); a 5-megapixel camera (the camera on the original Galaxy S III has 8-megapixels); and no 4G LTE technology, which is standard on the Galaxy S III.?Pricing and carrier availability are expected to be announced later this month.?

Already, Samsung's newest device has come under some fire. Gizmodo says it's a "major letdown." And over at Slashgear, Chris Burns calls the Galaxy S III Mini an "iPhone 4-sized pea-shooter" ? a device that falls far short of the lofty precedent set by the original Galaxy S III.?

"If you?ve been following along with the strategy Samsung has been working with over the past year, you?ve noticed that they?ve been doing rather well the Samsung Galaxy S III as a single hero smartphone across the globe with no design compromises," Burns writes. "They?ve just thrown that all away with a...?disappointingly low-level afterthought in this newer handset."?

In related news, Samsung announced earlier this month that it had recorded a record-setting?$7.3 billion in operating profits in Q3 of this year. The great majority of that profit came from smart phones such as the Galaxy S III, which has performed extraordinarily well in Asian and European markets.?

Guadeloupe Plans for Strong Winter Season - Cruise Industry News ...

Guadeloupe expects more than 200 cruise calls this winter season, according to?Olivier Bernard Michel, director, cruise, Caribbean and nautical department. Michel told Cruise Industry News that this translates into some 307,000 passengers, compared to 150,000 last season.

?The big ships call at Pointe-a-Pitre, which can handle two big ships at a time, one homeporting or interporting, and one calling,? Michel said. ?Other smaller ships call at Le Saintes, Deshaies and Marie Galante. In addition, we have opened a new port in Saint-Francois, with calls scheduled by Ponant.?

The Guadeloupe Port Authority is investing EUR 1.5 million this year, and another EUR 1.5 million next year, according to Michel, to expand and upgrade its facilities, so that for the 2013/2014 season, it will be able accommodate two big ships ? homeporting or interporting ? at a time.

?We are in discussions to have another ship homeport starting in the 2013/2014 season,? he added.

Michel explained that other efforts are?underway, including training of uniformed taxi drivers and certification of tour guides. The most popular shore excursions are tours to Guadeloupe?s beaches and rainforest.

He attributed the cruise build-up to the tourism board and port authority working together, with broad support from other tourism interests throughout Guadeloupe.

This coming season, most of the traffic increase will come in Pointe-a-Pitre from interporting calls by Royal Caribbean International and MSC Cruises, while Costa Crociere continues its homeporting operation, and Club Med continues to homeport and interport.

First time callers this coming season include Royal Caribbean?s Brilliance of the Seas, Pullmantur?s Horizon, All Leisure Holiday?s Voyager and Crystal Cruises? Serenity.

After making her first call on Nov. 14, the Brilliance will continue to make 22 interporting calls in Pointe-a-Pitre, becoming this season?s most frequent caller. The MCS Lirica will make 11 interporting calls. Michel said the two ships will embark from 100 to 300 passengers from Guadeloupe on each of their calls.

The Costa Luminosa, meanwhile, carries mostly passengers from France and Italy, who fly into and out of the Le Raizet airport, which has a dedicated terminal for cruise passengers. Luggage is checked in Europe and delivered directly to passengers? staterooms onboard.

Turning around 19 times in Pointe-a-Pitre this season, the Luminosa provisions in Guadeloupe, buying locally and shipping in from Italy, according to Michel, who noted the positive economic impact this has.

In addition, the Club Med 2 will make eight turnarounds in Pointe-a-Pitre.

Other callers this winter season include Phoenix Reisen?s Amadea, Saga Cruises? Sapphire and Quest for Adventure, P&O Cruises? Azura, Holland America Line?s Amsterdam and World Cruises Agency?s Princess Daphne. The season runs from mid-November to mid-April.

Ex-Oklahoma State basketball player leaves jail

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) ? Ex-Oklahoma State basketball player Darrell Williams avoided more time behind bars Friday when a judge gave him a suspended sentence in a sexual assault case in which Williams insisted he was innocent.

Two women accused the 23-year-old of groping them and reaching inside their pants without their consent at a party in December 2010. Williams' attorneys have insisted it was a case of misidentification, and his conviction rested mainly on the testimony of the women, who identified Williams as their attacker after police showed them a photo of the Cowboys basketball team.

Williams faced up to two years in prison after a jury convicted him in July on counts of rape by instrumentation and sexual battery. However, he continued to insist he was innocent and had requested a new trial based on what his attorneys said was new evidence.

Payne County District Judge Phillip Corley denied Williams' request for a new trial but gave him a sentence that allowed him to avoid prison time. Williams received two one-year sentences to be served at the same time. Both were suspended.

Corley also ordered Williams to register as a sex offender.

Defense attorney Cheryl Ramsey said she was "very upset" by the sentence and would appeal. Ramsey said she wants a new trial so Williams can have the opportunity to be found not guilty and have his name cleared.

"We thought that we had proven that the new trial motion should be granted," she said.

Ramsey said she wouldn't let Williams speak with reporters because of the pending appeal.

When asked for a comment before Friday's sentencing, Williams said, "I'm innocent. I didn't do it."

The Illinois native had been in the Payne County Jail since his conviction in July. He left the jail Friday in a car that pulled out of the garage and drove off without Williams speaking to anyone.

While he was in jail awaiting sentencing, several websites and Facebook pages popped up in support of him, along with an online petition urging the judge to suspend his sentence. His family insists Williams, who is black, is innocent ? the victim of misidentification by white women at the party and of racial profiling by a jury of 11 whites and one Asian who were picked from a largely white jury pool.

Supporters packed the courtroom for Williams' sentencing, some wearing black T-shirts that said "Free Darrell 25." Williams' uniform number was 25. On the back, the shirts said, "Innocent, locked up! for 86 days, I am innocent!!!"

Security was tight, with nine uniformed deputies. Williams' mother was there but didn't speak to the media.

Friend Brandi Robertson gathered with other supporters outside the courthouse, awaiting Williams' release.

"Yes, he's out and he's free and that's great, but he has to register as a sex offender," she said. "So my heart is broken for him. He's a good person and was done wrong and I'm very upset about it."

Ramsey tried during the trial to cast doubt on prosecutors' case by describing it as a "he said, she said situation." She noted neither woman suffered cuts or scratches or had torn clothing. Defense attorneys also claim Williams passed two lie-detector tests conducted by a State Bureau of Investigation examiner that were not admitted into evidence.

Meanwhile, one of Williams' accusers criticized people who believe race played a role in Williams' conviction or that she and the other victim had something to gain by coming forward.

"That's ignorance for people to say this is a race thing," she said in an interview with The Associated Press in August. "It's not about race; it's about rape. He raped two girls."

The AP typically does not identify victims of sexual assault.

Assistant District Attorney Jill Ochs-Tontz said although prosecutors wanted jail time for Williams, they are "thrilled" that he will forced to register as a sex offender and that he's a convicted felon.

"I hope that sexual assault victims across the state will see and know that no one is above the law," she said. "I honestly feel that Darrell Williams feels that he is above the law."

Ochs-Tontz said the victims did not want to comment on Friday's sentencing and that they want to put the incident behind them.

Coach Travis Ford suspended Williams from the team in February 2011 but testified at Williams' trial that he believed he was innocent. Before his suspension, Williams led the team in rebounding and averaged 7.1 points per game.

Ford and several of Williams' former teammates attended the sentencing hearing. None spoke to reporters, and Ford didn't immediately return a message seeking comment.

There were as many as 80 people at the 2010 house party, including some of Williams' teammates ? all of whom wore matching Oklahoma State warm-up suits. The two women heard about the party at a bar and showed up.

The women did not identify Williams as their attacker until three days after the party, when they were shown a photo of the basketball team by Stillwater police. Before that, the women wrote an anonymous letter to police and some media outlets to report what happened.

At trial, one woman said Williams held her against her will and dragged her in a yard. She said the attack happened in the basement of the house and that no one came to her aid.
