Obama vows to protect US troops in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is vowing to do more to protect U.S. troops from a wave of lethal attacks by Afghan soldiers and police.

Obama said at a news conference Monday that he has talked to a top U.S military leader about the attacks and plans to speak to Afghan President Hamid Karzai (HAH'-mihd KAHR'-zeye) as well.

Once an anomaly, attacks on international troops by members of Afghan security forces have been climbing in recent months. There have been 32 such attacks this year, up from 21 attacks in 2011, according to NATO.

Obama said U.S. officials are working on the problem, but added "we have got to make sure we are on top of this."

Obama said the military needs to beef up its vetting process for Afghan troops.
