Since the launch ESP in 1995, Bosch has delivered over 75 million of such systems to automakers. ESP detects the onset of skidding and counteracts this by reducing engine power and controlled braking of individual wheels. Studies have shown that this can prevent up to 80% of all skidding accidents. By continuously working to improve the system, Bosch has succeeded in making it available for all vehicle classes - not least by incorporating numerous innovations that reduce cost. These days, roughly every second new vehicle worldwide comes off the production line fitted with ESP.

"ESP is increasingly becoming mandatory in many countries with legal regulations now ensuring that the anti-skid system is generally installed as standard equipment," said Guido Gring, Vice President of Automotive Aftermarket, Sales Independent Aftermarket Middle East, Africa.

"Yet, installation rates for ESP in this region are still low. Therefore, it becomes even more relevant for Bosch automotive to insist on the importance of vehicle safety and on the promotion of technological innovation in this specific area all across the Middle Eastern countries," added Gring.

The importance of technological innovation in the sector of safety is confirmed by the fact that over the years, Bosch has received many awards for developing and launching vehicle safety systems. The latest distinction in time received by Bosch for the ESP technology is the Global NCAP Award 2012. The award, which is conferred by the Global New Car Assessment Programme, was presented on May 2012, during the consumer safety organization's annual meeting in Malacca, Malaysia.

Global NCAP's rationale for this award was ESP's high level of effectiveness, which, in the organization's view, means the active safety system is able to significantly reduce the number of road accidents and fatalities.

For all these features, the recognitions conferred to the Electronic Stability Program do not overlook its strong support to the aims of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety.

The ESP's system continues to be among the major contributors of this United Nations campaign whose target is to significantly limit the rise in the number of road deaths forecast over the decade between 2010 and 2020.
