Scarlett Johansson explains her nude photos

Scarlett Johansson is comfy in her own skin ? even, apparently, when more skin than she ever intended to show ends up all over the Internet thanks to a hacker who could wind up in prison for 100 years.

"I know my best angles," she quipped in an interview to go with the December cover of Vanity Fair, responding to the inevitable questions about last month's nude photo scandal.

Story: Johansson: Celebs deserve personal privacy

And while it was obvious Johansson preferred talking about her craft (winning her first Tony, making her first blockbuster hit, etc.), rather than her, er.... Anyway, she actually filled in quite a few blanks on the subject, including why she took X-rated pictures of herself in the first place.

"Those are old, from three years ago," the "We Bought a Zoo" star told VF. "They were sent to my husband."

Her husband at the time, of course, being Ryan Reynolds. They filed for divorce last December after two years of marriage.

"There's nothing wrong with that," Johansson continued (refering to the pics, not the divorce). "It's not like I was shooting a porno ? although there's nothing wrong with that either."

Story: Florida man arrested in celeb hacking probe

Nor was there anything wrong with her dating Sean Penn for five months, with the actress informing her interviewer that the two-time Oscar winner never tied her to a chair, as he is rumored to have done with ex-wife Madonna.

She admits that she "didn't know what to do" with herself when her Tony-winning run on Broadway in "A View From the Bridge" ended last year, as she had had a "very public separation."

"It was difficult. I was very uncomfortable," Johansson said.

One guy Johansson still sounds happy to stand beside these days is Barack Obama, whom she campaigned for back in 2008.

"When we were stumping for him, part of his platform was his wish to bring both parties together," she responded to a question about the president's administration being a disappointment so far. "People wanted to end this partisanship and thought we'd all hold hands and dance around the Maypole. But it doesn't work like that.... We're all guilty of being idealists, I and everyone who voted for him."

Johansson (who in the meantime will be campaigning for NYC mayoral candidate Scott Springer) said she'd work for Obama again, calling it "irresponsible not to," and maybe-joked that she'd move to New Zealand if either Rick Perry or Michele Bachmann wins the 2012 election.

While on the subject of thinking ahead, Johansson also mentioned having kids in the world we currently inhabit ("I wonder if there's even going to be space for my kids," she said) and suggested that maybe it's time already to write her obituary.

"Somebody, I just read the other day, wrote their own obituary," she remarked. "I think that's a great idea.... Why not get a head start?"

Yeah, we're going to pass on that, if she doesn't mind.

(AP) ? As the world awaits the closing arguments in the trial of Michael Jackson's doctor, a documentary celebrating the singer's life and defying his detractors premiered in Britain.

"Michael Jackson: The Life of an Icon" was shown at London's Empire Leicester Square on Wednesday, with two of Jackson's siblings, Rebbie and Tito, in attendance.

Producer David Gest said the documentary aimed to set the record straight about the late King of Pop, who died in 2009.

"I woke up one morning and said I'm going to make a movie about Michael's life because I was tired of reading ... all these tales that were so fictitious, and I thought let's set the story straight but let's give the people a movie that says something new," Gest said.

Gest said the film features interviews with family and close friends, as well as never before seen footage and photographs of the star.

Jackson's mother, Katherine, canceled a planned trip to London to attend the final days of the Los Angeles trial of Dr. Conrad Murray.

Rebbie Jackson said the singer's three children ? Prince Michael, Paris and Blanket ? were coping well with the trial.

"I've been around them and seen how they are and they are aware of it," she said. "They're dealing with it OK from what I understand, what I've seen, as best can be expected."

The movie was released on DVD and Blu-ray in Britain on Monday.

High doses safely combat nutritional deficiencies, researchers find

COLUMBIA, Mo. Vitamin D deficiency is common in Americans, and especially in overweight and obese adolescents, according to the National Institutes of Health. University of Missouri researchers have found that providing obese adolescents with a high daily dose of vitamin D3 is safe and effective in improving their vitamin D status.

"Obese adolescents face an increased risk for deficiency because they tend to absorb vitamin D in their fat stores, which prevents it from being utilized in their blood," said Catherine Peterson, associate professor of nutrition & exercise physiology. "We found that a daily dose of 4,000 IUs of vitamin D3, the maximum intake level set by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), is both safe and effective at improving vitamin D status in obese adolescents."

Vitamin D is obtained by eating certain foods, taking supplements and through sunlight exposure. It is essential for maintaining healthy bones, muscles, nerves and immunity. The IOM recently set new dietary reference intakes for vitamin D. They recommend 600 IUs per day, with a tolerable upper intake of 4,000 IUs. Based on the guidelines, it is important to determine the effects of a vitamin D dose that is equivalent to the upper limit, especially in understudied groups, such as obese adolescents, Peterson said.

In the study, participants from the MU Adolescent Diabetes and Obesity clinic were randomly selected to receive a placebo or 4,000 IU/day of vitamin D3 for six months as part of their standard treatment. All obese participants initially were deficient or insufficient in vitamin D status. Participants supplemented with vitamin D3 had significantly greater increases in concentrations of 25OHD, the main indicator of vitamin D status, compared to those who received the placebo.

Obese adolescents are only about half as efficient at using vitamin D as their lean counterparts. For example, in lean adolescents it only takes about 100 IUs to increase their serum 25OHD levels by 1 ng/ml. In obese adolescents, it takes about 200 IUs to achieve the same increase

"If obese adolescents only consumed the recommended 600 IUs, they would be in trouble," Peterson said. "It takes 4,000 IUs to raise their vitamin D status within a sufficient range. This is much higher than the currently recommended daily amount for this age group. This indicates that physicians need to carefully evaluate the vitamin D status in their overweight and obese patients."

###

Peterson is the director of undergraduate studies for the Department of Nutrition and Exercise Physiology in the College of Human Environmental Sciences (HES). The department is a joint effort by HES, the School of Medicine and the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources.

The paper, "Safety and efficacy of using high dose (4000 IU daily) vitamin D supplementation to improve the vitamin D status of obese adolescents," was presented at the annual meeting of Experimental Biology.

The research is funded by the J.R. Albert Foundation, which provides support to nonprofit education and research programs to enable people to live healthier lives.

Report: Swank fires staff over Chechnya

Widely rebuked for helping celebrate a brutal Chechen dictator's birthday last month, Hilary Swank has embarked on an internal housecleaning of her personal representation, The Independent reported Sunday.

According to the newspaper, the Oscar-winning actress has fired Jason Weinberg, her friend and manager for the last eight years.

Story: Swank 'regrets' attending Chechen concert

It's expected, the paper reported, that CAA representatives Amie Yavor and Josh Lieberman will be pulled off her team, too.

Brazil's Lula starts cancer therapy, doctors upbeat (Reuters)

SAO PAULO (Reuters) ? Brazil's popular former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva started chemotherapy treatment for throat cancer on Monday, with his doctors voicing confidence in his chances of being cured within four months.

Tests showed the tumor discovered on his larynx was not an abnormal type of cancer and should respond well to chemotherapy and radiation therapy, said doctors at the Sao Paulo hospital where Lula was being treated as an outpatient.

"The outlook is very good," said Dr. Roberto Kalil Filho, Lula's personal doctor who is part of the team treating him at the Sirio Libanes Hospital, a renowned cancer center.

"There is no other problem that could worsen the prognosis or raise the chance of collateral effects. We think the chances are very good."

Lula's diagnosis on Saturday shocked Brazilians and raised the prospect of political life without the charismatic former union boss, who remains an influential force in Latin America's largest country.

Some analysts and politicians have even speculated Lula could run for the presidency again in 2014 if President Dilma Rousseff were not to seek reelection.

Lula, who turned 66 last week, also had been expected to play a vital role in next year's municipal elections, helping stump for candidates from his left-leaning Workers' Party.

Even if he recovers from cancer, his health raises doubts over his ability to continue playing such an active role in domestic politics, especially if the illness damages his voice box and limits his ability to speak publicly.

Lula has been a key advisor for Rousseff this year as she has dealt with rebellious allies in her ruling coalition and weathered the resignation of six ministers, five of them over corruption scandals.

A prolonged absence for Lula, who canceled all national and international trips for the rest of this year, could give Rousseff more of a chance to put her stamp on the government. Most of the ministers involved in the corruption scandals were Lula appointees or allies.

Rousseff, who served as Lula's chief of staff, has taken a tougher line than her mentor on corruption. Before taking office in January, Rousseff was herself treated successfully for cancer at the same medical center that is treating Lula.

TUMOR LOCALIZED

Lula left office with high approval ratings after leading the country between 2003 and 2010 -- a period of robust economic growth in which more than 20 million Brazilians were lifted out of poverty into the middle class.

He has been a major force since the late 1970s, when he was a fiery union boss who led massive protests against the military dictatorship at the time. In 1980, he helped found the Workers' Party, now the dominant force in Brazilian politics.

The tumor was localized and had not spread through Lula's neck or to his lymph nodes, his medical team said. He will have three chemotherapy treatments 21 days apart, which will cause him to lose his hair and his trademark beard.

After that he will have radiation therapy. The doctors expect the treatment to end in February.

Brazilian media reported Lula, a charismatic speaker who can electrify rallies, expressed worries to doctors about losing his famous gravelly voice. But they have discounted the possibility of treating his cancer with surgery, which would have been a bigger risk to his voice.

Lula was a smoker and is also known as a drinker, both habits that boost the chances of throat cancer, according to the U.S. National Cancer Institute.
